Par for the course. You see the pluggers on everything. Someone who is a guest on one show will be a guest on all the others for a few days. I presume it is the broadcasters cutting costs because they will appear for nothing saving the money. Everything is money money money.

When we had no real choice - 3 or 4 tv channels, the revenues were concentrated and so there were funds to do some decent stuff. Now we have a choice of hundreds of different channels, supposedly. However, it has resulted in a pile of watered down crap in the main. Broadcasters just play it safe. Stuff like Monty Python - breaking the mould - is very unlikely these days.

Yeah, Parky was shit.

But even though he was as much a salivating suck-up as Ross and he unforgivably launched the careers of mind-numbing, sub-elevator, watered-down, pub crooners like Jamie Cullum and Michael Buble, a lot of the degradation of chat shows can mostly be put down to the modern world of few stars and even less mystery.

If a James Stewart or Mohammed Ali or Emu were being interviewed, I presume it was very exciting, even if you weren't a big fan of the guest. These people were greats in their field, who would be rarely seen in public and if you saw them speak outside of their arena, it was fascinating. These days, even the world's biggest stars can be seen doing multiple press junkets, print interviews and 'journalists' can be seen rifling through their rubbish bins to see if there's anything left to scrape in the barrel. The fact that most shows seem to prefer no-talent trash over genuinely interesting people only compounds the situation.

Pretty much exactly what John Cleese said when I saw his one man show last year. He said Python would never be commissioned these days and if it was the ratings figures would be analysed and pored over. They didn't even know what the ratings were for Python, they knew that the people who watched it mostly liked it but that's all. They didn't even pitch the show well apparently, Cleese said it's the worst interview he ever had, they were totally unprepared but the decision makers could see there was talent there so they took a chance. Very unlikely these days.
