Come off it. You missed the most important part - what do you want to do with it?
If you want to run the BBC production unit then this laptop sucks dead balls. If you want to use it for email, typing up a few documents and browsing the web then it's a decent enough deal. Dell are okay, bog standard average but their stuff does the job. If you want to play games and don't mind playing them at half speed then this is the machine for you. All depends what you want from a laptop.

Cheers NQ. All I want it for is typing up stuff and surfing. Isn't it good value for money though??

It's about standard for what is a low end machine. But if all you want is typing and surfing then it would be a waste of money to get anything else. It'll do the job and the price is okay, probably a bit better than okay considering it's a Dell and at least they use decent components. If you go cheaper then you'll end up with something pretty nasty.

N_Q being an Apple-loving, Sky-subscribing tech nerd is quite damaging to the image he had carefully constructed for himself.
I suppose that's the danger of this warts-and-all-social-media-reveal-everything-about-myself-on-the-internet-age.

Windows 7 home edition
Stopped reading there tbh. When people ask me to look at their PC to see why something is not working and I see the words 'Home Edition' - whether for XP or W7 - I despair. (Mind you, my mate wants me to check out his PC and it is worse - not just Home Edition but also Vista :shudder: ).
Push them for a better version of Windows 7.
Power supply you get get on eBay / Amazon.
Dell have improved the quality of their product in recent years - used to be shite but they have definitely turned things round.
£280 is not unreasonable for a PC.
Unless you are playing an insane number of games 500GB is plenty.
Unless you are playing the kind of games that saddos do 24/7 because they don't have a life, the cpu power should be sufficient.
It's not the biggest fastest or anything like that but it depends what you want it for. It's like a car. If you are just doing a few miles to work and back and getting the shopping / meeting friends at the weekend, you don't need a Porsche.
Push then for a better version of Windows 7.
Why? The only difference between home and pro is the networking options. If he's using it standalone, it makes no difference.

How so? I have been carefully cultivating myself as an Apple loving, Sky loving, tech nerd homicidal maniac with zero manners and severe sexual problems. So how is being an Apple loving, Sky loving, tech nerd going to hurt that?

tbf, it is a better product from Microsoft. Mind you, after Vista they couldn't have got any worse.
Best OS? What does that mean?

When you are trying to diagnose issues with the machine, you miss a lot of functions. Pain in the ass. When I'm looking at a machine in a hurry to fix things, I want the all system features at my fingertips.

The shop probably lost it - you have to allow for the fact that they are just a bunch of tossers in most shops like these. I'm surprised some of them find their way to work.

Just using it now having installed loads of defo legal stuff..very pleased with it. It seems the idiots at PC world had not properly known its specs so its actually better off than they advertised it to be...600 GB hard instead of 500 and 4mb memory instead of 3. Also my old charger works fine and is within the voltage requirements so won't short circuit it. Happy days! Chuffed actually only spent 280 on it. Thanks all
