Gone a bit book crazy the last few months.
Reading the Bourne books atm.
Didnt know there were 8 books. On the 2nd one now.
Brilliant so far. Nothing like the films and better than the films.
Planning on getting the Jurassic Park books tomorrow.
Any more recommendations?

Any Crichton is fun, though the more recent ones aren't as good. Starting with Congo. Except I liked the one with nanotechnology. I've never read the Great Train Robbery but I bet it's a blast. Cripps -- you like fantasy sometimes? Check out George RR Martin's Fire and Ice books -- the ones that HBO has made a TV show out of.

Familiar? To what? I know nothing about the book. Never seen the show so no idea what its about
It's all a bit predictable, it seems like I've read loads of other fantasy books just like it, there's nothing really new in it, not refreshingly grown up like the Abercrombie books or the Sandersons Mistborn series which have some really great ideas and it's certainly not as well written as the Rothfuss books The Name of Wind and The Wise Mans Fear, I was just disappointed.

probably my favourite book ever... The Door to December by Dean Koontz
Plot Synopsis
When a pair of renowned Psychologists are murdered from unexpected causes, Laura McCaffrey is called to assist in the case. Meeting with Dan Haldane, a police lieutenant, she is told that one of the victims was her divorced spouse, Dylan. Dylan, who kidnapped their only daughter years ago, had disappeared, only to turn up dead on-scene. While inside the crime scene, police notify Lieutenant Haldane of a girl wandering the streets of L.A.; naked. It turns out that the girl was Melanie McCaffrey, Laura's daughter. She was found in a catatonic, autistic state, and is sent to the hospital.

Going through a real book frenzy for the last few months - some of the best I've read recently:
Stuart - A life backwards by Alexander Masters - The moving biography, written back to front. Funny, enlightening and sad
You can't win - Autobiography of Jack Black during the early 20th century - another history lesson in hobos, crime etc - excellent book
Dead like you - Peter James - Started yesterday and finished this morning as couldn't put it down. DCI Roy Grace series investigating murders but this one I really wasn't sure about until the last few chapters (the murderer I mean not the book, I could read that again tomorrow)

Mine cost more than that but then again I got the second and third books as U.K. editions, imported into Canada, before the wave of popularity hit North America. It might sound a little ridiculous but the North American (U.S.) versions of books often have been edited into yank language and sometimes are shortened.

About 10 chapters in, loving it. The book is so insanely descriptive.
Okay, plot, I'll do my best to describe it aptly:
So the book, set in 1984 Japan, is written in 2 different narratives, one is of this woman called Aomame whose about 30. You quickly find out that she is an assassin with "crazy good skills" and likes to have sex with slightly bald men. She starts to question the reality of her world when she only just notices changes around her that happened a while ago. That's pretty much where I have got up to with her. The 2nd narrative, which I think is more compelling, is of a bloke called Tengo, he is a maths teacher who also writes fiction (yet to be published). He is a screener for this novel competition where he recommends those that are good enough to be put on the shortlist. He finds this novel, called Air chrysalis, which is terribly written grammatically but has a transfixing plot which involves "the little people". He meets with the author, a 17yo schoolgirl who turns out to be dyslexic. She is strange to say the least. Tengo starts doubting whether what she has written is fiction, or in fact real things that the girl sees. That's how far I've got to, about a 5th of the way through. Definitely worth reading :good:

The Secret saved my life!, December 4, 2007
By Ari Brouillette
This review is from: The Secret (Hardcover)
Please allow me to share with you how "The Secret" changed my life and in a very real and substantive way allowed me to overcome a severe crisis in my personal life. It is well known that the premise of "The Secret" is the science of attracting the things in life that you desire and need and in removing from your life those things that you don't want. Before finding this book, I knew nothing of these principles, the process of positive visualization, and had actually engaged in reckless behaviors to the point of endangering my own life and wellbeing.
At age 36, I found myself in a medium security prison serving 3-5 years for destruction of government property and public intoxication. This was stiff punishment for drunkenly defecating in a mailbox but as the judge pointed out, this was my third conviction for the exact same crime. I obviously had an alcohol problem and a deep and intense disrespect for the postal system, but even more importantly I was ignoring the very fabric of our metaphysical reality and inviting destructive influences into my life.
My fourth day in prison was the first day that I was allowed in general population and while in the recreation yard I was approached by a prisoner named Marcus who calmly informed me that as a new prisoner I had been purchased by him for three packs of Winston cigarettes and 8 ounces of Pruno (prison wine). Marcus elaborated further that I could expect to be raped by him on a daily basis and that I had pretty eyes.
Needless to say, I was deeply shocked that my life had sunk to this level. Although I've never been homophobic I was discovering that I was very rape phobic and dismayed by my overall personal street value of roughly $15. I returned to my cell and sat very quietly, searching myself for answers on how I could improve my life and distance myself from harmful outside influences. At that point, in what I consider to be a miraculous moment, my cell mate Jim Norton informed me that he knew about the Marcus situation and that he had something that could solve my problems. He handed me a copy of "The Secret". Normally I wouldn't have turned to a self help book to resolve such a severe and immediate threat but I literally didn't have any other available alternatives. I immediately opened the book and began to read.
The first few chapters deal with the essence of something called the "Law of Attraction" in which a primal universal force is available to us and can be harnessed for the betterment of our lives. The theoretical nature of the first few chapters wasn't exactly putting me at peace. In fact, I had never meditated and had great difficulty with closing out the chaotic noises of the prison and visualizing the positive changes that I so dearly needed. It was when I reached Chapter 6 "The Secret to Relationships" that I realized how this book could help me distance myself from Marcus and his negative intentions. Starting with chapter six there was a cavity carved into the book and in that cavity was a prison shiv. This particular shiv was a toothbrush with a handle that had been repeatedly melted and ground into a razor sharp point.
The next day in the exercise yard I carried "The Secret" with me and when Marcus approached me I opened the book and stabbed him in the neck. The next eight weeks in solitary confinement provided ample time to practice positive visualization and the 16 hours per day of absolute darkness made visualization about the only thing that I actually could do. I'm not sure that everybody's life will be changed in such a dramatic way by this book but I'm very thankful to have found it and will continue to recommend it heartily.

How's it going?
New Spring is weird because it was released between books 6 and 7 I think it's more for background info. Quite cool though because you get back story on some characters that you don't much history on.
The Hobbit, well, it's been about 36 years since I last read it

Hmm. Not as good as the film. The two bare almost no relation to each other apart from both being set in a jungle and the character names being the same. In the book Kaa the snake is one of the heroes of the piece. Also, most of it is other stories not featuring characters in the film.
