If you look at the Nationalist parties in the UK apart from England, they all are broadly left wing progressives (SNP in Scotland, Plaid Cymru in Wales and Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland). They are able to produce an inclusive sort of nationalism that appears beyond us in England. Billy Bragg was actually attempting to "reclaim" the St George's flag away from the far right racists in the BNP and National Front, but I don't know how successful that's been. I think one reason for it may be our Imperialist past, which is why a lot of people are (rightly or wrongly) uncomfortable waving the flag, which means the only ones doing it are facists and racists.

The fact St Patricks day is celebrated more than Georges sums it up really.

The reason is simple. The National Front used the union jack to claim that only those supporting white indigenous people and forced repatriation of anyone with a different skin colour were true Brits. They changed their name to the BNP/EDL to pretend they had changed but they still maintain that basic policy. Since no-one else in the country (apart from the Tories at play or the odd olympic games) used the flag, it came to symbolise the worst excesses of nationalism, racisim, xenophobia and intollerance of people who were in any way 'different'. The NF/BNP/EDL have applied the same attachment to the English St George's Cross and smeared it in the same way.

In order to win it back, those of us who do not go for the fascist crap need to use it appropriately. When the England team is being supported (yeah, I know) and all over the country you could see the English flag, it lost it's fascist imagery. Basically, we need to have more events where people do that to clear the air of the old image.

In countries like Scotland, Ireland and Wales which are or have been English colonies, the nationalism it represents is about an identity, not a suppression of minorities or the English (though I am comfortable with, and accept the latter) and so it is a more positive statement on national identity.
