The Edge of Tomorrow was really good. Surprising given its got tom cruise in it.

its pretty similar to source code but still enjoyable. Its one of those films where you don't have to think, the plot is so basic, a five year old could follow it but its funny, fast, exciting and you leave the cinema having enjoyed it but you don't need to see it again

Inside Llewyn Davis - beautiful film, 9/10.
Enemy - worth a watch if you like mindfucks, 8/10.
Blue Ruin - favourite film of 2014, 9/10.

Want to watch The Double but I'll need to give it time after watching Enemy because it seems similar, and Grand Budapest Hotel and Starred Up.

Watched Babel and survived! It keeps you riveted because it gives the impression that eventually something just has to happen. But it doesn't. Probably won't watch again.

Robocop? The proper one was okay as a throwaway diversion. The new one though, is probably okay as a throwaway diversion.

The Patrol. If that's how the British army works then no wonder everywhere they go is such a mess. Starts off pretty tense ( first 30 seconds or so) but eventually provokes a suicidal yearning for the end credits.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes. So predictable you end up shouting, "No, please don't!", every five minutes.

Not sure why I watch films, nothing good ever comes of it.

Watched' the spectacular now' a few months ago with a similar story and similar cast which was watchable as far as chick flicks go. Add in a cancer story and I didn't even consider this one as it'll definitely be one for the ladies.

12 years a slave - fucking dire. Gave up half way. Obviously a film constructed entirely to win an Oscar. Has all the ingredients. Looks authentic, but what do we really know about that period apart from what Hollywood has presented? Well shot. As an exercise in film making it's flawless. But the story itself is disjointed and just dull. More of a moral message than a piece of entertainment. Unwatchable unless you are film student or a critic.

An honest film about Iraq - now that might be good. We can expect that to be made in 50-100 years maybe.

0/10 for being so far up it's own arse it disappears.

Some of the best movies ever were made after the 80s, but only a few. There are very, very, very few good movies. You scan through the archives and it's shit, shit, shit, hyped, overrated, gay, shit X 100 before you get to anything decent. Same is true for any decade. Most movies are just throwaway garbage, instantly forgettable 90 minute formula pieces or rehashes that are like the TV programs that show up when you flick through the channel list. You watch the shit because nothing else is on. It's better that way because it makes the decent stuff stand out a mile.

Good film.

However, why does the eponymous girl go back to her ex, Desi? Was it part of her masterplan, or was it only because she was after money since that trailer park trash robbed her? I wasn't too sure if she intended to go full circle back to Nick..

It's an unmissable film, mainly due to the scale of it. The idea and solutions in the plot were brilliant. Hasn't been a film like it. But.....

...given his past films I expected more. The plot was clever but too ambitious. You could almost split the movie up into 3 parts and it didn't really flow well. I have no problems with the end - the logic is sound. But it feels like a missed opportunity - messing about with relativity and communication from high dimensional spaces to lower ones fits right into Nolan's comfort zone of nonlinear plots. Instead he tried to focus more on emotional aspects. Could've cut out some of the other plot lines and focus on selling the solution IMO.

Yeah - the sound was too loud in places. Shame because I thought the point of Imax was to make things more 'real' so getting the sound wrong kind of ruins it.

The plot was OK for an SF film for the beginning but when Ann Hathaway does the 'I think love might be a force in the universe' I almost threw up. Some of it seemed to be nicked from Arthur C Clarke - the end sequence owes something to 2001 and there is something from 'Rendezvous with Rama', and Arthur C Clarke novel.

Films are still overloading the effects and CGI atm but I guess they are playing with a new toy. Once they get it out of their system, hopefully we will get some better movies again.

Agree with the general point about cg but I don't think Interstellar is guilty of it. A colleage told me btw they had to rewrite some of the ray tracing software which normally assumes light travels in straight lines to account for the relativistic effects.

There's plenty I enjoy, but chuck a cliché at me, start doing that smartarse "people are really this cool in real life, honest" routine that Hollywood so favours, and I'll call it like it is. Boring, predictable, Americanised, mechanised shite. There's art and there's time filling, these are different things. I have no problems filling time, no need for Hollywood to help me out. But when art comes along I'll stop for it.

BTW, that Affleck guy. Cheesy grin, warm, cuddly, lovable, all's that's missing is a sledgehammer to the face. He played that role in Pearl Harbour, played it again in Gone Girl, played it in every role he's ever been overpaid for. Have you ever seen a more unconvincing scene than the initial police interview, complete with the obligatory, quirky yank copper whose sole concern seems to be exchanging wisecracks with the strangely (but he's a cool customer after all) unconcerned Affleck? Is that how it works? Hey my wife is missing, did you hear the one about...? Okay, fair enough, maybe the wife has gone walkabout and, damn it, she smashed up the fucking house - again. Bitch! Anyone who could get past that scene deserves a lot of credit for endurance.

Paddington, on the other hand, he's funny right off the bat - doesn't have to work at it at all. Affleck should go and see it and bring a notebook.

Don't know what Blue Ruin is, some porn snuff movie? Really hard to think of anything that stood out in 2014, not that I have seen them all. Theory of Everything - a shitty borefest from start to finish. The film hardly touched on the scientific impact the guy has had, which may have been the point but if so was a stupid point. Mostly blathered on about his boring wife. Awful - don't bother.

The Fury - actually kept me watching from start to finish. Not sure why - character development rushed with holes you could drive a bus through, sound was oddly muted considering it's tanks and bombs and shit like that, but the plot (run or drive around a bit, blow shit up, repeat) cracked along at a decent pace and in the end you sort of gave a shit about what happened to the characters, even the supporting ones. One of the better films of the year.

:haha: :haha: :haha:

Anyone tried actually watching Birdman? I mean yeah, it ticks all the Oscar boxes no doubt. But as a piece of entertainment? Maybe if you are on hallucinogens. So what's the criteria for best picture? Most luvvies packed into a confined space?

American Sniper? :haha:

You have just got to be kidding. This horrendous piece of racist film trash is nothing more than a string of lies glorifying a psychopathic serial killer. The truth about this film has long since been exposed. Isn't it amazing how racism can be greeted with open arms in one instance while being reviled in another? Make up your minds please, establishment gatekeepers. Okay, politics and rank hypocrisy are maybe not criteria so leave them aside. What about the film as a piece of entertainment? Well how sick in the head do you need to be to come away from this movie and say wow, I really enjoyed that? For flag waving morons undoubtedly it is a great watch. For sentient individuals, not so much. Makes you wonder who's on the judges panel. Can't be bothered to look tbf.

Boyhood - didn't see it.

The Imitation Game. It was okay, standard stuff. Watchable at least.

Grand Budapest Hotel. I have been avoiding this one, not sure why. Maybe unfair but it's not something I feel compelled to watch.

Selma. Routine stuff.

The Theory of Everything. Daniel Day Lewis has been there, done that. A boring rehash trading on the name of somebody notable to tell the story of somebody who doesn't have much to say.

Whiplash - As a story, as a film, as an experience, better than anything I've actually seen on that list. Better than the rest too, I'd put money on it. Roughly speaking, better by a factor of ten.

Interstellar was no 2001 but at least it encourage thought in places. It didn't just drag you along to be wanked on by the director. But it can't get on a list that features American Sniper? Excuse me, but what?

Birdman was a very good film IMO. Maybe wasn't as gripping as others but at least it was unique. Ed Norton's character was great. Boyhood is only spectacular if you appreciate how ambitious the project was.

Watched Marvellous starring Toby Jones. No idea why I watched it, hadn't heard of it, expected nothing but it was excellent. Not a big Hollywood rigmarole, a BBC TV job. If you can get past a fairly dodgy opening there are plenty of rewards later on. Bit of a cross between Being There and Rain Man and the football tie in was an eye opener. Believe it or not, it could make you take a different view of Stoke City.

Hence the 9/10 for American Sniper I guess.

Don't know why there was any controversy at all. That statue wasn't every portrayed as the Sphinx and the actual Sphinx looked thousands of years old in the one shot in which it appeared, which is absolutely correct. I did think the Black and White Minstrels appearing during intermission was a bit risky though.

Watched a few DVDs over the last week or so.

White House Down. Little bit ridiculous but decent enough for
Gravity. I'm sure it was phenomenal on a giant screen, but on a normal telly? Meh. Just seemed like a 2 hour special effects advert. With panting. Lots of Sandra Bullock panting. 10/10.
Sherlock Holmes 1 & 2. I actually quite liked these. The first one probably edged it, but they were pretty good.
Django. Tarantino does what Tarantino likes to do. If you like him then it's good, if not then it's more of the same. Fortunately, I like him. The hood scene especially
Road to Perdition. Solid enough, can't really complain.

Was going to watch Raid II until someone realised it was all in Japanese and didn't want to watch it anymore

Fast & Furious 7. Better than the 6th but not as good as 5.

The ending was quite sad. Paul Walker. :rose:

Watched 'Going Clear', the documentary on Scientology.

What a frightening, manipulative cult that is.

I thought the trailer made it look a whole lot better than it actually was. It was different for sure but quite forgettable in the end for me.

It got a very good review in this morning's Metro, for what it's worth.
