The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey. Easily film of the year

:gp:

Well, kind of.

I feel giving the Hobbit film/s their own identity and the slightly lighter tone of the books would have allowed them to stand on their own. As it is, Peter Jackson has basically made them into an extension of the LOTR trilogy (even the structure is similar to The Fellowship Of The Ring). I suppose this is almost a necessity to bring in the huge audiences again, though.

An Unexpected Journey is still vastly superior to virtually any fantasy film that has come before or after the LOTR trilogy, however. It doesn't have the sense of purpose or immediacy you had with LOTR. Some scenes are overly bloated and do nothing to drive the plot forward. It does occasionally seem as if parts were bolted on to ensure there's enough material for the trilogy. This can be mostly overlooked though when you have so many standout cinematic moments. From the swooping camera in the prologue to the climactic shots of the eagles, the whole thing looks incredible. One set-piece or battle scene in this film is more carefully-choreographed and spectacular than most directors' entire output. Even if it was just for the New Zeland scenery and the sense of being in Middle Earth again, the film would probably be worth seeing.

To provide Ach with a summary:

Martin Freeman .

Ian McKellen

Dwarves .

Trolls .

Orcs .

Giant birds .

New Zealand .

Total Recall did look pointless. At least a Paul Verhoeven film will always have character and something oddly unique about it, this just looked completely bland and generic. And early 90s films being remade is just odd.

Dredd almost seemed quite similar to The Raid (or Assault On Precinct 13, which it's obviously inspired by) but with Judge Dredd in it.

Loved it! And in 3D the scenery etc was awlsome. Can't wait for the next part.

I was worried that by making it into three films, they'd lose the story, but if anything (and if the first part is anything to go by) they will surpass what they did with LOTR.

Just thought everything about it was superbly done.

Some films have been pretty pointless in 3D. But this definitely isn't one of those films. I'm sure the film is just as good in 2D, but the 3D bit adds so much more IMO.

You went 3D? Interesting. A colleague did that is impressed with it. I'm increasingly seeing it as a gimmick and a fad, not that it matters because even if it is your TV will still be great (I had to patiently explain to MrsL last night that a 3D TV doesn't mean everything is in 3D).

You should get a surround sound system if you haven't though, it does add a lot and even an entry level model is awlsome.

I've already started depreciating mine, tbf.

My old heap lasted a good twelve years, and was still working. DVD player had gone up the shoot though. Thought it was about time to get up to speed with the new tech, as my set would probably have been useless in a few years.

I am expecting to have to upgrade again in four or five years this time though. I won't get the longevity on this one. And now I have glimpsed the possibilities, I'm fully signed up.

The first was probably the weakest, after watching I thought 'that was good but I probably won't watch again in a hurry' whereas after completing the series I wanted to start all over again, showing a marked improvement.

The fifth was arguably the best, certainly had the best final fight scene.

The sixth was good but felt like an unnecessary addition. Five wrapped it up nicely and would have been a great way to end the series.

I've just got through the Rocky series for the first time. Good stuff.

In short Stallone  still yet to see a bad film from the man.

Rocky 5....most people hated it. The man put his body through all that shit and that's how they tried to end the saga. Wasn't right. The 6th film was really good and I'm glad they made it. I thought it was needed. Some great speeches from Rocky. 'Ya gotta learn to take the hits and keep moving forwards'.

I was  when I heard they were making a 6th, especially after the 5th was so rubbish, but yeah, it was actually really good. Not as good as some of the originals maybe but very enjoyable.

If you know the damage then surely you should understand that the word shouldn't be used so openly and freely. Not on open forum like this anyway. Django Unchained...how comes DiCaprio didn't get a nomination for his role? Mean bastard! Tarantino...whoa! Entertaining but so many layers to the film. He messed with some many generes and even manages to get a little Hong Kong John Woo gunplay nod in and steals a move from 'The Killer'.

One disappointment...the soundtrack wasn't that strong as Kill Bill's. But I'll watch again.

Inglorious Basterds is the only Tarantino film MS has ever been wrong about. Inglorious Basterds is decent. Kill Bill is Tarantino's worst. Django Unchained a close second for his worst film title. Should've cut that film an hour short and nothing would've changed. Saved from a disaster by reliable Wilshere-esque performances from Christoph Waltz and Samuel L Jackson.

Tarantino makes films for 15 year old boys. Which is fair enough. But the thing with us kids is that we don't have a long attention span. So if you've got nothing to write about, put the pen down you fucking weirdo.

Exactly. I'm not sure if you wanted to make a point or went off on a Syntacular tangent, but you did. It worked for his first few films, but it fell apart in Kill Bill 2 and Inglorious Basterds. The charismatic psycho thing has also been seen too many times. Waltz's performance felt forced.

Kill Bill 1 was a pastiche of hundreds of other films, but extremely stylishly and expertly done, with Tarantino really showing off in a good way. Maybe he should become a really skilful action director.

Yup wasn't too bad overall despite having Affleck.

Though it'd being Hollywood they took a lot of liberties with the truth, including ignoring the contribution of the Canadians for the formation and execution of the plan which according to President Carter was about 90% yet the film depicts the CIA as almost entirely responsible for the rescue. Likewise it paints us (the British) and the Kiwi's as bastards for rejecting the Americans diplomats when they escaped the embassy at the start when in fact the British accepted and sheltered the diplomats originally before moving them to the Canadian Ambassador's house because there was less chance they would be found there - we would be the first point of suspicion. Not only that, we provided invaluable help to both the escaped diplomats and the captured ones at the embassy throughout the crisis.

They overly dramatised a couple of bits (the phone call taken at the last second) especially near the end but I could understand that as they needed to create tension.

John Goodman was fantastic as always.

I personally think that Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty were better out of the other Oscar nominees.

They overly dramatised a couple of bits (the phone call taken at the last second) especially near the end but I could understand that as they needed to create tension.

John Goodman was fantastic as always.

I personally think that Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty were better out of the other Oscar nominees.

I thought Zero Dark Thirty was the most bland and overhyped movie I've seen over the past few months. It wasn't Oscar worthy and rightly snubbed imo.

No, I was let down by that movie. They couldn't shoot!

I have high hopes for 'Welcome to the Punch'. Looks like tough old school action.

Watching Skyfall atm.

Do I have to watch the one before it to watch this? Seems very confusing

Nah you don't. QoS is set directly after Casino Royale, but Skyfall is a stand alone.

Just finished Skyfall. Just another typical Bond film. Don't see the fuss.

I enjoyed it as I do most Bond films but they are all a bit similar.

I assume Judi Denchs character topping it was supposed to be emotional? Was she even in other Bond films? I dont remember her in Casino Royale which is the only other Craig Bond film I've seen. Haven't seen any Brosnan ones. Doubt she was around for Moore or Connery

Life Of Pi:
I believe this boy is one for the future, yes. He has shown an outstanding potential. The spirit, belief and desire is already there. Will he be the new Jonjo Shelvey? Why not? He does not refuse a physical challenge. But I feel the Tiger has been little bit too aggressive. Spare me how nice he is and do not tell me he is not that kind of animal. What do I think of a felid playing someone called Richard Parker? We do not like to look at the species of an actor.

The global impression is very positive.

Les Miserables:
I must tell you, this is not my account of our season so far. But is Russel Crowe's illusionary singing analogous to our illusionary quality? We will not speculate on this speculation. Hugh Jackman gave absolutely everything, but I believe Anne Hathaway dropped little bit physically in the second half. We do not like to put a date on her return. Is it never? 2-3 weeks maybe. Would I recommend this to Pulis? No. There is not enough injustice for him to complain about.

Will it sweep the awards season? There is a small chance, yes. But I believe it would also qualify for the Champions League, which is of course a much more valuable trophy.

Django Unchained:
I must say, setting up in an identical way every time and employing tiresome tactics is not a quality. We are not racist against racism, but we are as well you know against poorly thought-out sound bites, half-baked game plans and sloppy play. Was Christoph Waltz the only redeeming feature? I will keep this to myself.

It is far away from domination. Maybe 89.45% away.

Lincoln:
There is perhaps too much faith shown to the handbrake, but the efficiency is there when they just play their game. Daniel Day-Lewis has given another top-class performance. Is his dedication to his profession, his exceptional commitment to his work and ability to become someone else for a long period similar to myself? No, I am not an actor. But I feel I have given a good impression of Arsene Wenger for the last eight years.

Top, top, top quality acting but the little burst does not always occur in the drama.

I tend to be of the same opinion, i definitley enjoyed Skyfall but for me it was pretty much for the most part standard Bond fare, but at the same time I thought the way it explored the Judi Dench - M character as a kind of Mother figure for these 00 field operatives was interesting.

I watched Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook yesterday:

Lincoln i genuinely liked because they decided against doing a biopic (which would have covered so much ground historically that even a three hour film would not have done it justice) and instead focused on the passage of the 13th amendment in lieu of ending the civil war which took up the last few months of his life. Really liked both Daniel Day Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones.....but why does Joseph Gordon Levitt get good roles?....what has he ever done to deserve it.

Silver Linings Playbook is a good watch but it's not Oscar merit so to see that it was nominated for so many awards was surprising really

Oh, I liked the Mummy films.

They had a real charm. Inoffensive and good fun, with some good comic scripting and a cast that worked well together. Sort of Indiana Jonesy, I guess.

Stoker:
Technically, this is a masterpiece. If you've seen Park Chan-wook's other films, this isn't surprising. But he still surpasses himself in various scenes. Tarantino wishes he could be this effortless. The actual plot is a disappointment, though. Beyond the initial intrigue, there's little meat to the script. However, if as he increasingly appears to be doing, Park is using the bare bones set-up to deliver an elongated visual metaphor for a young woman's coming-of-age, then it works much better. On that basis, the ghostly and darkly humorous performances, the lingering uneasy atmosphere and the sudden bursts of typical Park comic book violence feed into the air of this being more a twisted dream sequence than the supposed murder mystery you'd initially expect. Nowhere near Park's best work and certainly style over substance, but an intriguing first English language film from Celta Vigo's star striker.

Inamoto/10.

Mama:
A decent start to the horror proceedings. The creepiness is there, the shocks are sporadically there, the somewhat interesting mystery is there. It's all serviceable enough, but as always, majorly let down by resorting to a predictable, generic final act which relies too much on dodgy CGI and undermines the promise built up earlier. Enjoyable enough overall, though not as good as the similar Insidious.

GeriHalliwell/10.

Oz: The Great And Powerful:
Not as overly effecty and bombastic as expected, but not particularly memorable all the same. James Franco, as he often does, seems likes he's sleepwalking and/or stoned throughout and that immediately gives the film a throwaway feel which finds it's way into every aspect. Everything, from the script, the basic plot to the characters are underdeveloped. Some of the scenery and effects are impressive, the monkey is awlsome, the doll is uniquely creepy and charming, but mostly it all adds up to a missed opportunity to create something special. It lacks Raimi's usual oddness for the most part too, apart from the witch at the end and of course, Bruce Campbell . Oz: The Moderate and Unspectacular in summation.

Wizadora/10.
