View Full Version : FA Approach Woy for England job.

WEST Bromwich Albion have today received an official approach from The Football Association to speak to Head Coach Roy Hodgson about the England Manager's post.

The Club are currently in negotiations with Roy about a new contract - his current deal ends on June 30 - and remain very keen to bring these talks to a successful conclusion.
However, Roy has expressed a desire to explore this opportunity and, accordingly, the Club have granted him permission to speak to The FA.

Chairman Jeremy Peace said: "Roy has done a fantastic job over the past 15 months and the fact The FA want to discuss the England role with him is testament to that.
"Roy is a proud Englishman and we can understand why he wants to speak to The FA about this highly-prestigious managerial position.
"However, we have emphasised to Roy how much we would like him to remain as our Head Coach and continue his major contribution to our project at The Hawthorns as we look to establish ourselves as a Barclays Premier League club.

I reckon Hodgson is currently the best English manager for the position. He managed to get West Brom out of being relegation contenders into a stable mid-table side without spending too much. Also got Fulham to the Europa final couple years back. Didn't seem to get going at lfc though. Other contenders would be Moyes, but I doubt he'd want to leave club-management as yet. Tactically Redknapp seems clue-less, ie always changing to a 4-4-2 seems his only plan B.

They get a free pass for the next 2 years. It'll be - should have hired Arry - all the way unless whoever gets the job wins something. It'll be fairly sickening.

This is one of the biggest (and funniest) footballing snubs of all time if it pans out. Now if Arry can steer the champions to 6th place, that'll be icing on the cake. From champions and the heroic new England manager to also rans and a huge fuck off all in the space of a few months. Brilliant stuff.

Should've been Woy instead of Sven, definitely instead of McClaren, should've been him instead of Capello too, probably even Keegab too.

I wonder now if it had passed his best time, but either way up against Redknapp who I believe has one FA Cup to his name in 30 years of management, Woy shits all over that.

Problem is footballers are odd bastards and like to follow the crowd so I worry that Hodgson won't be accepted by them.

Well their just talking to woy so its not in the bag yet. Heard at one point they wanted to give to Pardew. so who knows but as long as this fecks with arry and the spuds minds till then end of the season.

He obviously means in terms of principles - that the manager of the England NT should be English, manager of the Spanish NT should be Spanish etc...not that foreign managers can't do a better job than English managers.

But the divides on the international scene in all sports are weakening. Qatar have been able to buy athletes to race for them in athletics and the English cricket team has been carried by South African players.

Personally, I think it's alright for the manager to be foreign. I don't really care either way - it's not going to make a difference; with these sets of players, we've got no chance of getting far.

Strange decision this one, he's a good manager when in a small club environment but he's not done a great job when he's been at a big club, this includes Inter and Liverpool, I wonder whether this is the FA doing it their own way again rather than choosing the person almost everyone wanted in charge.

Dunno about Wazza. In fairness to him he's not like the other England old boys. And he will play well under a foreign manager - and hodgson is a foreign manager, I'm sure MOe will be able to tell you why. And the rest of the old boys shouldn't be picked. We won't win the euros. The focus should be on giving the youth a go. But the problem is the only youth worth playing are at the North London clubs.

I never know why the "Boys in the Press" view is seen as that important. They often scroll the camera across them at England matches and nowhere else on the planet (apart from on Safari, or in the Darts at Christmas that the BBC have the rights to) will you find a bigger group of scruffy, unshaven, ugly, uncouth, clinically obese chavs.

Little rule of thumb should always be: If the public & press want him, then he's not the right choice.

They wanted Keegan, nice guy but inspiring tactical team talks consisted of telling "Scholesey to go out there & let some 'and grenades off." They soon turned on him & that didn't work out.

They wanted Venables - dreadful win ratio, especially given we chose every opposition we faced until Euro 96, when even in our own back yard we won 2 games out of 5 & one of those against a team kicking the shit out of each other in the dressing room beforehand - and should've lost to Spain had the referee had his eyes open.

It took a while for Sir Bobby to be popular, Euro 88 was dismal & he was slaughtered by everybody up until the Belgium QF in Italy 90.

Now the latest clamour is for someone who's won 1 Fa Cup in 34 years of management, albeit was still one of the stand-out candidates.

The suggestion that Roy was the stand-out candidate is shit.Who do the FA think they are kidding -nobody. They appointed him for three reasons: 1) they didnt want to pay Spurs upwards of £10million ( Roy costs nothing) 2) Harry's wage demands were likely to be much higher than Roy's 3) Whilst Harry was acquitted of tax fraud charges he doesnt have a great reputation and the FA were probably worried that other matters would emerge and they would have another Venables situation on their hands. Also Bernstein could not have been impressed by Harry's evidence in the tax fraud case when Harry admitted that he was a complete moron who cant count, cant use a computer, cant read and doesnt know how to use a bank account. Hardly England manager material.

But the hacks will continue to claim the whole country wanted Twitchy. The lengths they're going to to further their agenda. Woy is going to need every bit of luck he can get. All this no expectation stuff is nonsense, if we flop he's going to get butchered. I would have preferred Crooknapp because as you mention he's very chummy with the press and also the players love him. That's what the England set up is all about, lads on tour imho.

An intelligent foreign manager like Woy stands no chance.

Dennis Bendtner
01-05-2012, 04:22 PM
To be honest I think Woy is fairly mediocre himself. Undoubtedly achieved good things in his career, but as much as he would want people to overlook the Liverpool stint, he was badly out of his depth there. His public statements smacked of a guy who couldn't hack it. I think similar may have happened at Blackburn but that was before my time. The England dynamic is the worst of both worlds - lots of pressure to achieve with overhyped players (the ones he'll take to the Euros anyway). If you compare overall there is probably not a great deal between he and Twitchy. The players might love Twitchy at the start but as we've seen at Spurs, he's already shovelling the blame onto them. That dynamic is very fragile. And Twitchy's 'go aht and facking play' stick would be found out very quickly at international level. At least Woy has some sense of pragmatism and idea about player abilities. In all I'd say the FA have gone for the least worst choice, given the other would cost £10m and wouldn't get England any further.

The only way England can win the tournament is if they Greece it, we just don't have the players to play as 'Arry would ("go 'aht there and have fun"). And more importantly the other big name teams do they have those players, in abundance.

A lot of people (okay, journos) still seem stunned by this appointment. Why though?A couple of months ago Woy was regularly asked at interviews about the England job. He declared that it is one he would consider. So it was open then that he was a candidate. Unless the media led themselves to think that he was just the 'stalking horse' candidate.

Only Dave Kidd and - very surprisingly - Rob Shepherd are in any way positive about this appointment. Lukewarm support from Holt and Spike Dudley ('Sam Wallace' to his mum), but otherwise the usual pram-toy interface is doing the rounds. McGarry's response is particularly hysterical. "Players openly laughed at him". Okay Ian, maybe so. Who is to blame for that?he certainly isn't!

Oh, and for the revisionist historians out there, Switzerland at USA '94 often played some nifty stuff. A far-cry from the abomination of Germany '06

Quite the opposite actually.

It's widely regarded that he and Carragher called for Rafa to go, Hodgson to come in and regularly praised him even after it became obvious he was out of his depth (not his fault by any means and there were lots of things wrong in the club at the time).

Saying that, Gerrard should hurry up and retire from internationals asap. Preferably, now.

The FA and the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) have today received a large number of objections relating to the front page headline in The Sun newspaper, regarding Roy Hodgson’s manner of speech.

On this occasion, we will not be making an official complaint to the PCC but we have raised it with the newspaper and made it clear that their front page is unacceptable to us.

With regard to the above, FA Chairman David Bernstein said: “We are delighted at the media response to Roy’s appointment but are disappointed with the headline in The Sun, which we consider is in poor taste and disrespectful.”

Listen, I think Keane only has about five different sentences he can offer the world of punditry, but listen, I still think he's more valuable than 99% of 'pundits'. He generally says it as it is, rather than cop-out and gloss over things which other yes-men ex-players do. And look, listen, relaying facts through accurate observation may be the basic requirement of any pundit, but at least Keane does it without the swathes of slimy smarm and unearned arrogance that the likes of Hansen and Irish Taaaaansend display. The appointment of Roy Hodgson as England manager has been met in Germany with a general response of 'who?'.

West Brom's head coach was on Tuesday appointed by the Football Association on a four-year contract after being picked as the best man for the job.

Harry Redknapp had been the runaway favourite to succeed Fabio Capello, who in February resigned as England boss, and there has been some surprise he did not get the job.

That view has been echoed in Germany by Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes and the UEFA Champions League finalist has also confessed he does not know of Hodgson.

"I don't know him that well," said Heynckes at a media open day ahead of the European Cup final.

Problems
"But I've followed the discussions and also heard the opinions of the national team players and they would have preferred the Tottenham manager.

"But as it is so often with national associations, they don't listen. I cannot say whether it's a good or a bad appointment, because I don't know him that well.

"He was with Inter, and with the Switzerland side, so he has international experience. But to be the manager of the English national team is not that easy.

"What do I know? Maybe there were difficulties, or problems with Harry Redknapp."

Bayern star Bastian Schweinsteiger agrees with Heynckes regarding the uncertainty surrounding Hodgson.

Conflict
"The work that Harry Redknapp has done at Tottenham is perfect [for the job of England manager]," he said.

Schweinsteiger added: "The other one (Hodgson), I just don't know. I can't tell you anything about what he's like with players, or how he trains them.

"I've heard more about Redknapp at Tottenham and I saw them play very good football in the Champions League."

The general underwhelming response to Hodgson's appointment would seem to conflict with the views of David Bernstein.

"He has outstanding contacts through his work with UEFA and FIFA," said Bernstein at Wednesday's press conference to unveil Hodgson.

"He can walk into any training ground around the world and command respect."

Hodgson was appointed on a four-year deal on Tuesday but will stay in charge of his club West Brom (http://topics.skysports.com/West+Brom/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif before turning his focus to England and the European Championships next month.
Although the 64-year-old has international experience with other countries, Capello still stressed that taking the reins of a national team is a very different challenge to the club role Hodgson has been performing of late.

Capello told the Times: "As a club manager, you are a manager. As a national team manager, you are a selector.
"You cannot work with and get the best out of the players all of the time because some are injured, some are not in a top moment, some are unhappy with their club's position, some have a problem with their manager.
"It's not a normal job. It's difficult to create something. You can't do something in a short space of time.
"The idea is to create the team spirit and winning mentality in a really short time. This is very difficult. It will be hard.
"And the other thing is that you don't play a lot of games. In nearly every game, you are either in or out."
RecognitionDespite his reservations, Capello is hopeful Hodgson enjoys success with the team that the Italian guided through qualifying - and partly for selfish reasons.
"I've known Roy since he was coaching in Italy and I have met him often in these last few years," the former Real Madrid (http://topics.skysports.com/Real+Madrid/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and AC Milan (http://topics.skysports.com/AC+Milan/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif boss added.
"I believe he is a very good and experienced manager. I wish him all the best for the future and Euro 2012.
"I'm happy with the job I did for England. I hope that England will be one of the best teams at the Euros and they can show my job was really good. If things go well as I hope, people will recognise that I did a good job."

And, listen, that's all you can ask for in these dark days of embarrassing footballing coverage.

But it's Roy Keane? Did you miss that part or something

The chief of the FA had his first meeting with Roy and said
"Don't forget that we won't have Wayne for the first two games."
Roy replied "I don't care what the weather's going to be!"

Long as you don't know the result it doesn't matter.

The last big game I didn't watch live and had to watch Sky+'d was the CL final last year. A group of us had to avoid all media sources and turn phones off etc. and then started watching it about 1am I think. Although it was good to watch the mancs get stuffed, the game was boring.

But generally, I like watching games late. 10pm is perfect. Everything you might need to do during the day is done. More pre-match drinking time. I must remember to stay unemployed for summer 2014 - if you have work at 8am you're fucked.

Pretty much if you don't know the score or avoid or media reaction then it should be ok.

Not the same though. By the time you get around to watching the replay you already know which fuckers missed the penalties.

As an outsider, Roy is actually what England needs instead of Redknapp. This England team has actually no style of play, a bunch of players who really don't work well with each other. Redknapp would've been the worst thing for England. Seeing as he has openly admitted that he isn't one for tactics and all that. With Spurs he has the players to just say "go and play the way your play". But not with England

This team needs structure, and discipline, that's what Roy is good at. This team could make a decent run, if these players understand, that they are not as good as they think they are. And just listen to Roy.

But this could be awlsome.

Ranieri .

Maybe he'll prosper at a non-money-bags club where there's little pressure.

Possibly, although they were quick to get rid of Di Matteo for some reason.

Awful set of guests. I suppose the hardcore were still busy chewing their own legs off over Arry. They even led with the FA cup, tell me that would have been the case if wide boy had been appointed.

I guess the main supporters of 'Arry's election campaign will still be asked about it next week anyway.

Won't they have boiled down into froth by now? Perhaps they will put them in buckets on the the table and stir. At least that's what a good presenter would do but we're stuck with Brian who will be in his own bucket.

He should come out for the first match with an umbrella and a turnip. Get it over and done with.
