Insultive was used by someone here. Not sure if it's widespread though.
The overuse and absolute misuse (and abuse) of words like literally, phenomenal and epic in today's media and society is enough to make me feel like the repressed Ned Flanders.
Even though tbh is a GW staple, idiots (well, footballers) using it in every sentence of speech is actually quite annoying.

Lemons.
Seriously, who invented them?
Utter shit.
Mentioned it quite a few times in similar threads - but that is because it annoys me a disproportionate amount - unimpeccable ( ) manners.
I stopped at a zebra crossing today. A bunch of tourists crossed. Nobody signalled to thank me. All it takes is a nod of the head or a quick wave of the hand. Nothing. I was tempted to run them over. With my bicycle.
Sort it out, England.

Why should they thank you? It is their right of way. Do you thank everyone waiting at a side road when you drive down the road which is your right of way? Of course not. You thank someone who gives way to you when they don't have to.

We're not talking in terms of what people "should" do - as I say, it's about courtesy. They have caused me to stop and so a quick nod of the head or wave would be good courtesy. And yes, I put a hand up when a car lets me pass even if the obstruction is on his side.
By your logic, what's the point thanking the cashier when they give you change? They're not giving you your change voluntarily, they'd have to do it anyway. A quick nod and a smile. That's all I'm asking for. I'll nod back. I'm happy to stop. They're happy to walk. Britain is a better, friendlier place.

Oh - I sometimes do that but I don't see it is a requirement. The point I was trying to make is that a lot of drivers seem to assume that they have priority over pedestrians and that they are doing them a favour by not ignoring the pedestrian's right of way and just mowing them down - the thanks should not be 'thanks for not disobeying the highway code and slaughtering me in cold blood'.
Worse is on road junctions where cars seldom give way to pedestrians and if you exert your right of way, they go mental.

Once upon a time, when there were 3 channels - BBC1, BBC2 and ITV, the powers that be restricted ITV to a max of something like 7 minutes of advertising in any hour. Now we have 3 grillion channels of shite with no real control, they push out ads like there's no tomorrow. I didn't realise how big it was till I edited a couple of series I'd recorded to strip out the ads. Every 9-10 minutes, there was an ad break lasting 5 minutes. So instead of 7 minutes of ads per hour as in the 'good old days', it is now about 20 minutes an hour. So if you switch on the telly or change channels, 1 time in 3 you will hit adverts. No wonder most TV sucks the big one.

I still cannot work out why Bulger's father hasn't killed this guy yet. He'd be easy enough to track down. I mean surely you'd make it your life's mission to cut this guy into pieces if he did that to your son? Brits have become too soft.
As for grinding gears....
Surely number 1 is people walking in pairs, or sometimes even three across, towards you on the pavement without even attempting to accommodate you when they see you walking towards them. Do they expect you to walk around them on the road or something? They then give the bemused look when you hold your ground and inevitably walk head on into them.

Correct. When the state denies the citizen the right to defend himself and his family on the condition the state will do that job on the citizen's behalf, and then the state refuses to deliver its part of the bargain the citizen certainly does need help from elsewhere. The absolute insanity of this is the glaring contradiction being waved under the citizen's nose. It is apparently wrong for citizens to defend themselves, immoral even (you really have to laugh). But the same state reserves the right to use violence and coercion as a central device in all its dealings. And then demands the citizen pays for this hypocrisy, and not just in monetary terms. You can see our prime minister and the lunatic Hague begging for the go-ahead to murder kids in Syria, unintentionally of course because how could there ever be intent involved in dropping a bomb? They are guided by the lessons of Iraq and Afghanistan (apparently) but still they persist. And all the while they demand the citizen be docile. Violence is NEVER the answer, don't you know? Unless it conducted by the state in which case it becomes a moral obligation.
Yes, people who see through this need help. And the ones who dutifully accept it are here to show us the enlightened path. Thank God/ state.

You refer to the law as if it is somehow functional and serves its intended purpose. Under such imaginary conditions it would be prudent and useful (though not wise) for citizens to defer to a functioning legal system. Otherwise no. Inertia is the only thing protecting citizens now, a memory and familiarity with a justice system long gone. When the absence of law becomes widely apparent, especially to the criminal element, the citizen will have long since forgotten how to protect himself and his family. This blind reliance on state is beyond horrendous. They judge who should be in prison entirely on economic and political factors, look at the States if you want to see where we are going. Police "officers" have replaced police men, they are now revenue collectors for the state, as are the courts. Only this week a county police force declared it would only investigate crimes it believed had a decent chance of being resolved. A free pass for 60% or more of the crimes committed in that area. What are the citizens supposed to do? As the perp to leave evidence? Society used to protect itself, now it hasn't a clue. The idea citizen led justice automatically leads to rampaging mobs on the street is fantasy. Your argument would be better framed, if everyone had their child killed then everyone would take the law into their own hands. Even then this isn't lawlessness, it's the opposite. Lawlessness is when the state denies the rights of victims and ignores the behaviour of criminals. Of course state is the biggest criminal organisation of all so the bias is understandable though certainly not desirable.

It’s the whole nature vs nurture debate. It’s interesting that you bring in sexuality. Not so long ago, homosexuality was deemed as deviant behaviour but now, because it’s being linked with genetics, we’re accepting it as a part of nature and society. If it can be argued that paedophilia is linked to genetics, then when will society start to look at as an illness that needs treatment instead of a crime?
It’s a can of worms. Is it okay to punish if it’s a case of genetics?

What point are you trying to make with this example? Surely this is a case of the citizens forcing, or attempting to force, justice when the state has allegedly failed? Zimmerman appears to have committed a crime because he wasn't intervening to prevent a crime in progress and he provoked the situation in which he ultimately had to defend himself. The common law neatly takes care of all these issues with just a few lines of text. State law, with its trillion pages of bullshit is the problem. Genetics don't enter into it. If you cause harm to others or their property you should be held accountable. This is a simple concept. If you are not causing harm then you are entitled to live as you see fit without being burdened by the unlawful demands of state.

If anything the judicial law has failed to uphold the rights and expectations we as civilians anticipate. I'd agree with most of that.
The state has turned into a money grabbing, opportunist entity. They are supposed to be impartial and have some sort of 'duty of care' for residents, but the people running it don't give a flying f*ck about us. Hence why they take expenses at every opportunity while a young mother in Ilford can barely afford food for their child. The state has turned for the worse and long gone are the romantic 'good old days of Britain' where they were viewed as helpers.
But I think that goes for most things in modern society- police officers don't really give a fuck about murders because they happen so often. There's a general lack of respect among people which can be directly linked to the rise of celebrity culture over the past decade, turning us into opportunists with no sense of dignity towards others. And it's only getting worse.
This 'dysfunctional' element you're talking about is rife almost everywhere but it doesn't give you a right to take the law into your own hands. If a day comes where that ever becomes acceptable, society will have truly failed. I'd like to think there is a minimum threshold of efficiency still being upheld, even if it's minimal.

I don't think the majority of people are pretty fucking stupid, I think they have the convenience of being able to behave pretty fucking stupidly delivered to them by state and they take it for an "easy life". That life is then governed at the whim of a self interested body that now only exists to perpetuate itself. Is it "easy" for the millions who are on the breadline and being blamed for their condition by a stuffed arse who's only exposure to the planet is through the lens of a private drinking club? The imbalance is absolute. We all pay a lifelong and life sucking price for the convenience of this loathsome state.
One of the worst symptoms of the all pervasive state is the majority can no longer conceive (even casually imagine) an alternative other than a dark absence of authority that automatically descends to violent anarchy (ironically the inevitable outcome of an overbearing state). Responsibility and cooperation are never viewed as a viable alternative to authority. Such alternatives don't have to involve the removal of government (although that would ultimately be the most desirable outcome if we are to progress as a species) but simply a re-tasking in line with the principles on which the state is claimed to be constructed. Liberty being chief amongst them. We works our arses off to pay for a police force that shuffles paper behind desks. Could we not re-purpose some of that work to defend our own communities? Is it beyond people to guard their own interests and does the only solution come in the form of a remote state that treats the street you live on as a mere statistic?
If we are incapable as individuals then what great character traits mark out the geniuses that sit in ministries making decisions for us? These "right honourable" creatures that claw their way through a political career and somehow know what's best for everyone. They certainly know what's best for themselves, no doubt there. Why we listen to them and not to ourselves is an ongoing mystery. But it doesn't automatically follow we are stupid. Complacent, probably. Cowards, probably.

That's delicious. Of course we shouldn't discriminate against the blind, it's awful to even think it. Do you see how this works? When common sense is trampled in favour of some utopian idea of imaginary equality? Our mere "goodness" can conjure equality into existence. What pisses me off more than anything is the fact the blind aren't allowed to drive. It's a disgrace. That said, I wouldn't allow people who poked their own eyes out with pencils to drive. People vote for different reasons. Some refuse to vote because they're all the same or they object to the system. We've had that debate on here recently. Others vote on idealist grounds because they hope it will make a difference.
A LOT of people, though, vote because The Sun tells them which way to.

And there we have it. People are stupid therefore they must be controlled. And whilst conceivably there may be some people outside government who aren't stupid (such as Letters), the glory of democracy ensures they are controlled too because the majority rules. All that remains is for "clever" people to decide what form of control to install, for the benefit of the stupids who can't possibly run their own affairs. This seems like a completely reasonable way to manage society.
whether feudal, democratic, autocratic or whatever, you have always seen people tend towards a system where a few are in charge of what the many do. You never see a free for all lasting for long. Why is that?

The raison d'etre of a church is to proclaim (what they see as) the truth. Especially as we/they see it as having eternal consequences. But mindless? No, I've never been at a church which does it mindlessly.
In some religions *cou-Islam-ugh*, it's not encouraged to question. In Christian circles I've been in it's always made very clear that we believe such and such but you have to make your own mind up about it.

Leaving aside the narrow and arbitrary conclusion that any alternative to the state is "a free for all", go on then. Why is that?

tell people to mete out their own justice as they see fit = free for all= total breakdown of any semblance of law and order as people turn on each other and look out for their own interests, in the narrowest possible sense. whats the mystery?
Admittedly I was taking my cue from your earlier points about how 'the state' has failed and people need to take the law into their own hands.
And I asked you why. I think such a state doesnt persist people ultimately people realise its very counterproductive and impose some kind of system (ie the few ruling many.) TO state it another way - if you genuinely think folks would be better off without a 'state' or 'rulers' you must have some theory that explains why countless generations have always thought otherwise.
On one level, stability allows people to form and plan the creation of wealth in the broader sense, including both human and physical capital. Its certainly the case that people in a position of privelege have done particularly well out of that and there is a big debate about fairness and equality here. However most would argue that the average person's odds of surviving and hopefully prospering are better under some form of government which implies stability and certain shared responsibilities as opposed to having to do everything (including policing your own land, imposing your own justice and educating your own kids) yourself.
If not, and you think we'd be better off without voting, government, a justice system and so on Id like to know what you think the alternative is.

Framing the debate:
tell people to mete out their own justice as they see fit
people need to take the law into their own hands
if you genuinely think folks would be better off without a 'state' or 'rulers' you must have some theory that explains why countless generations have always thought otherwise
And now I may proceed to add some substance to an argument I didn't pose in the first place. Thanks.
I didn't say people need to take the law into their own hands and mete out justice as they see fit. Neither did I say government should be removed. I said where the state has failed to administer justice in line with its contract with the people this should not deprive the people of the right to act to uphold justice, particularly in defence of their own life and liberty. The state does not derive its authority from God or some other entity that stands above the people. It's bureaucratic rulings do not trump basic human rights and the common law.
The state should be nothing more than the will of the governed and when it exceeds those bounds it is automatically in breach of the contract it has with the people. When mechanisms designed to control the state are removed or mired in eternal bureaucracy or worse, deterred through force and intimidation, the state becomes an obstruction to the will of the people and therefore invalid by default. That is where we are today, under the governance of an illegitimate and coercive state. That is where people have been for most of history. To suggest this is because people desire it requires proof on your part. How do you know it's not a question of coercion rather than consent?
The king had thugs to enforce his will. The parliament has a paramilitary and bureaucracy to do the same. Bureaucratic and legal structures designed to isolate the individual and disrupt collective dissent are ever more powerful tools of state. Invasion of privacy, secret courts and tribunals, a two tier legal system designed to the advantage of the rich where laws are literally reversed depending on economic or political status. Thou shall not kill, steal or covet thy neighbours goods - unless there is a statute that permits it. And such reversals and privileges do not apply to the common people who are allegedly the expression of the state. How does that work?
Tell me again, what magic formula allows the state to deprive the Bulger family of justice and the undoubted majority of the people who would see that justice done? Who are these eminently wise individuals who have placed themselves above all others to decree the victim has less rights than the guilty? And considering the state refuses to act and in fact prefers to rub the victims' noses in inaction what happens to justice? Where has it gone? And why will the whole of society descend into medieval anarchy if justice is served in this case?
This isn't to say the Bulger family even want that bastard dead. But they have clearly expressed a desire for justice as promised under the so-called law. And if there's some underlying benefit to denying this justice what is it?

Im not standing up for the bulger killer's right to playstation 4 or whatever of course.
I do have to point this out though:
"under the governance of an illegitimate and coercive state."
People are getting gassed and extermintated in Syria. Yet some half arsed debated about the interweb and and bureaucracy in the home counties - and a cobbled together government directly resulting from an electoral process most people (and I assume yourself) felt was beneath them to get involved in?
I think there is a real lack of perspective here I really do

Yes exterminated.
My perspective is all wrong. It's me that's running the too big to fail, drug running, money laundering banks, it's me that's running trillion dollar war machines while a third of the world starves, it's me that's sending cruise missiles and drone strikes against civilian populations, it's me that dumbing down the education standards of kids and condemning them to lifelong debt, it's me that's opening your mail and sorting through your knickers drawer, it's me that's poisoning the environment, it's me that runs the pill pushing health industries, I'm a bit of a mad cunt when you look at it which I suggest you don't.
But let's say you strayed for a moment. Why do you think that Syria TV stuff is happening? Because of an age old rivalry between ideological factions? Like the Hindus and Muslims, or the Arabs and Jews? If only they could be more like the British we wouldn't have all these problems, but would there be enough victims to go around? Our long running intervention in those countries certainly isn't a major part of the problem and even if it was the benign and representative bureaucracy we have here that is always expressing the will of the people (hence Iraq) would be able to calm our nerves I'm sure. No sound of boots so everything is fine.
Do you really believe our state and the American and Russian governments/ establishments are connected to their respective populations and are mere horrified onlookers as these foreigners tear each other up? Savages! (The foreigners I mean). A lot of people do think that way and when you put that sort of perspective on things then it would be fair enough to say truth becomes hysteria. The pay-off for our silence is the standard of living brought about by pillage, especially in the case of the Americans and their petrodollar (see Syria, exterminated, etc). Is it beneath me to endorse war criminals who are the embodiment of the breach of standards defined by our own judges and generals at Nuremberg? Unfortunately yes, I am an arsehole over things like that. But I do appreciate the fact they haven't turned the worst of their excesses on the home crowd, a bit like the Krays who always looked after their own in return for total compliance.
The world is waking up though. 91% of the American people are against conducting illegal strikes against Syria. People are looking and learning and realising what's been going on in their own backyard. All mad bastards who are blowing things up, metaphorically rather than physically for a change. Britain will be last to rise, we like our lie-ins and we have that eternal reserve that allows us to look the other way with confidence.

i agree with that one. Not that I'm a smoker, but it does hold the queue as people ask if they have x brand, then spend ages asking which others one they have when they don't have x brand. If people want to smoke, they will, just because they can't see the cigarettes despite knowing they are there, won't stop that
Being a reformed non-smoker, I can honestly say, you shouldn't smoke. It's bad for you and it smells.
