Most transfers aren't paid in "one big chunk", the vast majority are paid in instalments over a number of years. I think the most common is half now, half in a year, but it can be across a much longer period. Not to mention whenever performance bonuses are involved. The only times they aren't are when the likes of City or Madrid are involved, or like the Torres-Carroll debacle.

They might outbid us, and they might use their contacts now they've recruited all the ex-barca peops upstairs...but the thing that really gets me is that Arsenal are seen as a really soft touch when it comes to transfer dealings and I think a huge part of that is the way our transfer 'dealers' perform - Gazidis in particular. If I am not mistaken, we did not get the 35million from Cesc transfer in one big chunk - it will be paid out over a series of seasons (with Barca's prize money), we also didn't get the 15million for Alex song in one big chunk - in fact I don't think we've ever got paid in one big chunk - except by Man City! Which brings me to the point - Barca - are not financially secure (but will they be investigated, prob not) yet, we allow them to do deals like this with us. They probably have a good 25-30million outstanding in what they owe to us and yet they can turn around and say 'no' we are not selling Villa to you - because they are under no pressure to wipe out their debt. Who will dare to touch them? Platini? Blatter? they are barca fans.
They should hand Villa over on a plate the amount of times they've screwed us and unsettled our players. But no. I honestly think they are scum.
Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. It's business. I'll say one thing though, if Villa wants to come here which seems to be the case (as in it's widely reported) and we are offering an amount Barca see as acceptable, but they are refusing to sell him out of spite, we should put a ban on transfer between the 2 clubs. Seriously if I was Arsene I'd refuse to deal with them. They'll come knocking again for a player one day soon and we should refuse to sell the player to them irrespective of the situation.

dont want to tip you into suicide but van persie's deal is also being paid through instalments. heard its £12m up front and the rest dependent on trophies etc.

It is standard practice to be paid transfer fees over a number of years and with conditions linked to success/appearances/etc.
Getting paid in one lump sum is not the norm.
Which is fair enough - but when it's a player like Cesc - should we accept being paid over 5 years? When he will bring them instant success? I pretty sure we could be a little more heavy-handed in the transfer market.

And why should they? If any side in this league does not need yet another quality forward, it's them.

Really??? 12m upfront and the rest depending on trophies??? How does that work? so if ManU fail to win anything they get RvP for 12mill? I dont think thats accurate, can anyone confirm this?

Is that our spending? It might go even higher if we really want Ince, but hopefully we don't. hopefully our wage bill will look a bit healthier though.
Depends on many things. Whether we bother to start putting money aside for Anfield, if we have any major players leaving and the massively unlikely chance we finish 4th. But it does put pay to the BS that FSG won't spend anymore.

completely buries that idea you're right, they certainly back their managers and live in the real world. although i'd think a top six would be the min expected and a better start to next season.

Well I don't think they'd have been as giving had they not hesitated/blocked buying Dempsey, but I wouldn't be surprised if we had a nett spend of about £20-30m in the summer as well. And as you say, if they do then the expectations will creep higher.
Although I do keep skipping between thinking, on paper, we have a decent team (not squad), and then thinking it's crap. So I won't say "we're not that far away" yet.

Given they still owe us a lot of money, it suddenly becomes an acceptable offer.

It wouldn't be that much because we don't know how much Cesc would contribute, perhaps less than half of what they would want for him.
We can write off extra Song money really, it'd just be the Cesc issue.

Not that the strikers are an issue at the moment for us, but for god sake just give them 15m and be done with it. Freshen up the team, create some buzz, all tomorrow is going to do if it pans out as we expect is poison the atmosphere even more. I'm surprised we even managed to come back tonight given how the crowd bay for blood every time we go behind now.

I don't want 2 or 3 mediocre players on very good wages like we have done before. All I wish is for Wenger to bring in that one Marquee stand out player like a Falcao or a Cavani. They sold us this promise that we would be competing with the biggest clubs in Europe when they first proposed the new stadium. We competed more on transfers when we were at Highbury. FFS we were paying Sol £100K and I believe he was the first 100 grand a week player in the premeirship. Look at us now, a club with no ambition that has become a feeder club to man u, city and Barcelona playing for 4th place each season.

My (well, stolen from sickipedia really) transfer deadline day sweet shop analogy:
The child in the Everton shirt buys sweets for cheap because that's all he can afford and sells them on to other children in the playground for a decent profit.
The child in the Liverpool shirt isn't allowed to buy any sweets because he spent too much on sweets last year.
The child in the Chelsea shirt can't decide which sweets he wants, so his Russian uncle buys them all.
The child in the Man City shirt can't decide either, so his Sheikh dad buys the sweet shop.
The child in the Newcastle shirt refuses to buy any sweets that aren't imported from France.
The child in the QPR shirt panics that the sweet shop won't be there the next day so buys many random sweets at inflated prices.
And finally... The child in the Arsenal shirt is made to stand outside the shop as his dad says they have loads of sweets back home, 2 of each in fact, and that they are more than good enough for consumption.

Sounds like an absolute nutter....
Venezuelan international Fernando Amorebieta looks set to depart Athletic Bilbao in the summer when his contract runs out, and will inevitably become a target for Premier League sides.
In a similar manner to team-mate Fernando Llorente, the defender has allowed his deal with the Basque club to expire, permitting him to exit in the summer for free.
On his day £5million-rated Amorebieta can be one of the best defenders in the La Liga. But he’s no stranger to a horrendous foul, a fact which has explains why, at just 27, he has the worst disciplinary record in the history of Spanish football.
Physicality is part of the modern game, but Amorebieta repeatedly takes it needlessly to the next level. In his career, he has been sent off on 11 occasions in the domestic league.
Recklessness is the key issue, diving into tackles minutes late. In addition to delaying his arrival at the ball, Amorebieta is liable to take the easy road, and foul players cynically rather than take the more sensible action of chasing them or legitimately challenging them.
Leo Messi would confirm that Amorebieta is dirtier than Bilbao’s grittiest tapas bar, after he was studded in the face by the defender during a clash at the San Mames.
There is, however, another side to his game, and Amorebieta can occasionally serve up the kind of sublime performance that prevents top quality strikers from getting a sniff. When on the ball, he has the ability to pick out a 40-yard pass, and his competence in the air makes him a threat at set-pieces, even if his lowly five career goals says differently. But this side of his game rarely outweighs his poor decision making, which can cost goals and dismissals.
Indeed, it is a sign of his stagnation as a footballer that when his contract does expire, his probable destinations would be either Everton or Norwich in the Premier League, or Russian outfits Rubin Kazan and Zenit St Petersburg.
In 2009, when Rafa Benitez was Liverpool manager, he repeatedly scouted the defender - then valued at £10million - hoping to lure him to England and teach him the art of tackling, as opposed to his more robust approach.
Amorebieta, however, has proven incorrigible, seemingly more intent on following in Andoni Goikoetxea’s footsteps by taking on the nickname ‘The Butcher of Bilbao’, rather than learning the art of elegant defending.
Unfortunately, however good he might be, most clubs will conclude that a man who is sent off three times a season, missing upwards of ten games, is a luxury they cannot afford.
Fist of Lehmann

Arsenal are in advanced talks with Malaga over a deal for full-back Nacho Monreal.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is believed to have targeted Monreal after losing Kieran Gibbs for three weeks with a thigh problem following the 2-2 draw with Liverpool last night.
It is understood that a deal for the 26-year-old is at an advanced stage, with Malaga ready to let the player go as part of an ongoing plan to balance their books.
Arsenal had earlier looked at a deal for Valenciennes left-back Gaetan Bong but Wenger swapped targets after Malaga made Monreal available for transfer.
The Spain international, who had been linked with Atletico Madrid this week, is already believed to be in the country for a medical and the Gunners are working hard to try and push through the transfer before the 11pm deadline.
Monreal, who came through the academy at Osasuna and made over 100 appearances for the club, is likely to cost around £8.5million.
