Is this a reminder that people still care?

Aye. It is, in a rather more dramatic and serious way, a bit like flouncing out of an internet forum (hi Falvs  )

she was hardly going to be hounded by an angry mob, in under a week this story would have been long forgotten.

I don't get this thread :(

A few days ago some Aussie DJ's phoned up the hospital where Kate Middleton was being treated, they pretended to be the Queen in order to get some inside info on her condition. The nurse foolishly fell for it and gave out some details.

There was a little bit uproar.

The nurse has now killed herself.

Seriously people. This is about some people who don't live on the Internet and who believe (maybe misguidedly) in loyalty and reputation. I find it incredibly sad. The hoax callers may not have intended this, but they couldn't have cared less about making someone look foolish. Maybe an overreaction, but reminds us that poking fun isn't very positive.

....and she thought she let everyone because of what GF said - people give to much of a shit about the Royals. I can't portion any blame to the Aussies - it's ultimately not their fault this country is fucked up. It's a sad story and I'm not one of those alphas that think the solution to a mental health problem is just to man up. Sometimes people need help and support and its very unfortunate she seemingly didn't get the help she needed.

Nah. We spoke about this earlier. No-one cares that much about this story.
Replace the word 'Royals' above with 'celebrities' and this would be just as valid. It's a general obsession with celebrity which I think is more of a problem, these days the Royals are just celebs albeit uber-celebs. Were it 'Posh' in hospital then granted the hoax call might not have come from Australia but the same thing could have happened with someone pretending to be David and the same outcome.

Did you know what this nurse looked like before this? Did you know her name? She would hardly be pilloried for it by the public, no-one knew who she was.
If the nurse was that unstable that she'd do this then it might well have happened anyway sooner or later.

It's sad but it's not really anyone's fault. If you must point a finger anywhere then do so at the press, they're the ones who blew up a non-story into something which made this lady feel so stupid.

It's a sad story. As said, unfortunate she did not get the help she needed and her family is left in this situation. The DJs are getting pilloried everywhere and their show's been taken off air. Wouldn't have thought they'll have much of a future. There's so many people hounding them and sending abuse who probably didn't even raise an eyebrow when the prank was actually aired.

Yeah they're 'responsible' for this and 'need stringing up'. Another sensible reaction from the Daily Mail there.

The radio station is a joke.

The phonecall was not broadcast live - it was recorded and then broadcast. Then when it proved popular, the management put the call on their website.

The same management that have now suspended the DJs.

There are different levels of 'celebrities'. The royals are top of the list. Nobody else comes close. Not Victoria Beckham, not anyone. There aren't bigger celebrities in the UK. I agreed earlier that there wasn't as much outrage/blaming the nurse....although, of course, the hospital said they would take necessary action (which they should). It was headline news and it was a controversy though.

If as you say: if forcing blame, the press are the culprits - we have to remember that the press only publish what the public lap up. And so it is the British public that blew up a non-story into something which made this lady feel so stupid. And that's what myself and a few others are annoyed at. It's this fascination and obsession with the royals that has ultimately led to this case. Maybe something could've happened later on anyway if she was mentally unstable but, I would argue, almost certainly, there would never be as much public attention on her. 99.999% of people will go through their whole lives without such attention.

There is an obsession over celebrities in general - but you know what? When we're talking about the big players...the ones that radio hosts would make an effort to hoax information out of, we're not talking about Big Brother winners with their 15 minutes. We're talking about people that generally have some sort of talent and have contributed something to the world to be recognised to that level. As Arsenal fans, we might be interested to know about the health of Hartson because he was a good striker, not because he was born into fortune or status. There should be no such thing as the royal family. I'm not trying to portion any blame on the royal family - I'm just annoyed of this culture of people caring about the talentless tossers and, in this case, that has probably indirectly led to this death.

It wasn't even the nurse who divulged the information, it was the one who initially answered the phone and put the DJs through to Kate's personal nurse.

It wasn't that funny, neither was it a 'cruel hoax' as the Sun would have it.
It was just a silly prank call which had the press not made such a bloody fuss about no-one in this country would have even known about.

Thing is after everything that happened to diana you would have thought the media would have learned, the prank could have caused uneccessary distress to kate. Doesnt matter what you think about the royal family, the most dangerous part of pregancy is the initial weeks, is there any point in the prank apart from creating notoriety. Well it certainly has done that for the two DJs. They quite frankly deserve to be sacked.

I disagree with the prank - I think it is crass and juvenile. However, the 'prank' was not broadcast live - it was recorded and broadcast some hours later. So the station management knew about it, approved it, sold the recording on and had it publically available for you to listen to at your leisure on their website. If they were now to subsequently sack the duo, they'll have their asses sued off them, because they approved the broadcast every step of the way.

I don't care that it is to do with the royals, and I believe that no one could have forseen the outcome, I just wouldn't want to listen to such a crappy and tasteless broadcast, and if this is representative of the output of this station, I'd be happy to see the whole operation shut down.

And it will probably happen because advertisers are bailing - not for any principled reason mind you, but because of what was an unforseeable outcome.
