That really is shit news, got all his books, in both flavours, He's only 9 years older than me too :(
My favourite author, only author I have all the books for, even feersum endjinn which was a f'cking nightmare to read, lol. Really shit news this is. Inspired both my love of reading and love of scotch. Will be sadly missed when the time comes.

So is his stuff worth a read? I've never done so... What sort of writing does he offer?
Fiction and Sci-fi. Both Wasp Factory (fiction) and Consider Phlebas (Sci fi) were excellent introductions to his unique take in both genres (admittedly i haven't read much sci fi beyond Banks)
I believe he only wrote one book of non fiction, about Scotch, which wasn't as well received but perked my interest netherthess.
His work can be generally heavy going, and his stuff is a bit twisted, especially wasp factory, but I can't recommend his books enough.

Actually looking for something decent to read so may check one of his books out, don't mind heavy going but cant say I am the greatest lover of sci-fi, more into history. . .actually read a book called The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littel a while back and that was twisted at best. . .had to check no one was checking what I was reading at times. . .:sudder:
