Anyway Scholes has retired if anyone cares.

He basically retired years ago. Hes been shit for some time now

Scholes was an incredibly good player in his pomp, those late runs into the box and lashing 20 yarders in for fun, quality.

Neville. check

Scholes. check

Giggs and Fergie next pls.

At his peak he was awesome but he hit 30 and has been average for 7 years now

He might have lost his engine, but he could still make pinpoint passes across the pitch with ease. Like Giggs, he always picked the perfect final ball too. He could have had another few years at some pointless club like Blackburn or Sunderland.

United desperately need a creative midfielder now. Modric tbh. Or Fabregas for £60 million please.

What I admired most about him, was that in an age of mercenary's and media whore players, this guy didn't have an agent and continuously took pay cuts just so he could stay at the club he loves. You never read about him in the papers and most people still find it a bit odd when they hear him speak because it's such a rare occasion.

Of course he was a complete GHEL on the pitch though, just like Jack.

Well at least he was a player of great ability on top of it. Most GHELs are just 'get in their faces' and 'show them you're there' merchants. And Scholes' scummery on the pitch is no worse than Messi, Iniesta or Busquets' sly rolling, crying and bitching to refs. Most players are twats these days. You can at least appreciate Scholes as a rare English player who actually had technical ability and applied it towards a great career.

Cripps_orig
31-05-2011, 11:30 PM
Overated imo.

Lampard and Gerrard pissed on him. Both got 20 a season regularly. Did Scholes get that even once?

And then when them 2 became Englands first choice, Scholes cried like a bitch and retired. He was shit for England as well for the last couple of years, not scoring for ages til Euro 2004.

Sir Alex Ferguson is readying a bid for Blackpool playmaker Charlie Adam as the Old Trafford manager looks to replace Paul Scholes, who announced his retirement from the game today. Gerrard and Lampard basically play as second strikers for their teams. And Gerrard is the main reason why England have been awful in recent years. He is the poster boy for headless chickens and anyone who says he is better than Scholes is quite simply wrong.

Few better players in the history of a club that's had some serious good'uns. For all the rivalry there reaches a point where you hold your hands up and admit there were few better than Scholes. He's what football should be all about. Compare him to the utter cocks that pass as players these days, with a few notable exceptions. I have big hopes for Jack. The next Scholes, fingers crossed. Of course he has a way to go yet and hopefully he'll be with us for that journey.

One source said: "Rhodri is planning to confront Ryan when he returns home.
"His mum Lynne has told him not to do anything stupid. The situation seems about as bad as it could be at the moment and there could be blood spilt if Ryan doesn't do the decent thing and apologise.
"There could be a war between them - Rhodri's got quite a temper. The only thing holding him back at the moment is the effect this would have on Lynne.

This isn't sour grapes (maybe just slightly gone-off ones), and you can't argue with ol' Baconface's record, but the signing of Young does puzzle me. Haven't they got Valencia for that kind of thing?Unlike Ash, he can cross too.
A lot of United's signings puzzle me actually, but they often go unquestioned. I still have a good laugh at the Bellion/Kleberson/Djemba-Djemba triad of 2003. I laughed on the other side of my face when the latter ended up at B6 though...

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has claimed that the club were unfairly targeted by the Football Association last season.
The Red Devils saw striker Wayne Rooney (http://topics.skysports.com/Wayne+Rooney/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif handed a two-match ban for swearing into a television camera after scoring in the 4-2 victory over West Ham at Upton Park.
And Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson (http://topics.skysports.com/Alex+Ferguson/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif was hit with a five-match touchline suspension for his comments about referee Martin Atkinson (http://topics.skysports.com/Martin+Atkinson/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif in the wake of their 2-1 defeat at Chelsea. (http://topics.skysports.com/chelsea/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif
Gill, (http://topics.skysports.com/David+Gill/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif who is a member of the FA board, was speaking in new book Champ19ns, which covers the club's record 19th top-flight title last term.
"What better way to demonstrate the authorities are being tough than by hitting one of the biggest clubs the hardest?"
David Gill Quotes of the week (http://www.skysports.com/quotes)
Harsh

He said: "I do genuinely believe there have been some poorish decisions that, in my opinion, wouldn't necessarily have hit other clubs.
"That's not to say I'm condoning Wayne's comments, because I don't think they were correct, or what Sir Alex said (about Atkinson) because it wasn't helpful.
"But at the same time, the actual punishments were harsh. We're possibly being caught up in being one of the biggest clubs and the 'Respect' agenda being there.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to lift his ban on talking to the BBC.

Ferguson began his boycott of the broadcaster in 2004 after it made allegations against his son, Jason, in a TV documentary.

A statement said: "Sir Alex and the BBC have put behind them the difficulties which led to Sir Alex feeling unable to appear on BBC programmes."

United's next game is against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The joint statement, released on Thursday, follows a meeting between Sir Alex and the BBC's director general, Mark Thompson, and BBC North director Peter Salmon.

It added: "The issues have been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.

"Sir Alex will now make himself available to the BBC for Match of the Day, Radio 5 live and other outlets as agreed.

"No further comment will be made by either party on this issue."

Sir Alex Ferguson has accused the Football Association of treating Manchester United "like s***".

The United manager, hit with a five-match touchline ban last season, made the claims while talking about having up to eight players on England duty.

Ferguson, 69, said: "The FA may realise who has produced more players for their country than any club in the world.

"Maybe they will realise how important we are to England instead of treating us like s***."

SUPER-rich Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was given a yellow card by Tesco — for pinching a £1.19 DOUGHNUT.

The Spaniard, 20, was quizzed by security staff after he scoffed an Original Glazed ring treat from a Krispy Kreme cabinet at a store in Altrincham, Greater Manchester.

De Gea was hauled up after being captured on CCTV helping himself to the treat — but escaped a penalty.

The sticky-fingered stopper — thought to be on £70,000 a week — wolfed down the doughnut in the magazine aisle.

But as he headed for the exit without paying, he was tackled by security staff — one of whom spoke fluent Spanish.

They took the keeper, signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer in an £18.3million deal, to the store's "stop and search" room.

And they made it clear he had made a right howler by giving him a hairdryer treatment that would have made Man U boss Sir Alex Ferguson proud.

De Gea strode into the Tesco Extra with two Spanish pals.

A source said: "They weren't very subtle. They swaggered in chatting loudly in Spanish.

"The security guards who monitor the CCTV watched two of them take a doughnut each out of the Krispy Kreme cabinet.

"Incredibly, they then appeared to try to leave without paying — or buying anything else for that matter."

The source said that when challenged and ushered into the search room, de Gea did not seem to know what was going on and "looked pretty embarrassed".

Last night a Tesco spokesman said: "A customer was spoken to by our security team and the issue was resolved."

Police were not called and no further action was taken.

Tesco has a strict policy of a three-month store ban for alleged shoplifters.

De Gea is regarded as the best young goalkeeper in Europe and was part of the Spain Under-21 team that won this year's European Championship.

His United career got off to a shaky start but he has recently begun to impress with some fine saves.

Sir Alex is fully behind his star signing. He said of de Gea earlier this month: "He's 20 years of age and doesn't know the culture of the country.

"That's a lot to deal with but he has shown great composure about the whole thing.

"He's not got himself flapping about the goalmouth. I think he's absolutely outstanding. The boy is tremendous."

They are reliant on Vidic just as much as we're apparently reliant on RVP, Liverpool on Suarez, Stoke on Walters, etc.

They'll need the haphazard Evans, Jones and Smalling to step up.

Manchester United have confirmed midfielder Darren Fletcher is to take an extend break from football due to health reasons.

The Scotland captain missed two months towards the end of last season due to illness and also sat out United's pre-season tour to North America.

He returned to action for his national team in September's Euro 2012 qualifiers and has gone on to make 10 appearances for the Red Devils this season.

However, Fletcher has been suffering from a chronic inflammatory bowel condition and the 27-year-old is to take a break from the game.

A United statement read: "On behalf of Darren Fletcher, Manchester United wishes to announce that he is taking an extended break from football for health reasons.

"Over the past year he has had several absence periods which we have attributed to a viral illness in order to respect his right to medical confidentiality. Darren has, in fact, been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time preceding this.

"Whilst he was able to maintain remission of symptoms for a considerable period this has proved more difficult recently and Darren's continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

"He has therefore accepted medical advice to take an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again.

"We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery."

ROY KEANE insists he has every right to criticise Manchester United — regardless of what Alex Ferguson thinks.

Former United star Keane claimed his old club got what they deserved when they were dumped out of the Champions League by Basle.

His comments did not go down well with Fergie, who claimed the Irishman should take a look at his own managerial failings before questioning anyone else.

But Keane stands by his statement and has suggested that Ferguson's success is down to his players as much as his own coaching methods.

The Irishman said: "If you want to question my managerial record, listen, you could question every pundit's managerial skill in relation to Ferguson's and we're all going to come up short.

"But I would also say that without players like myself, maybe he wouldn't have such a good managerial record.

"It's soon forgotten that we put bodies on the line for him."

Keane also believes Ferguson failed to support him following his abrupt exit from Old Trafford in 2005.

He added: "People say he stood by me in difficult times.

"But he didn't when I was 34, not when I was towards the end and had a few differences with former United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz.

"All of a sudden then, 'Off you go, Roy, here's the statement we've done".'

Raphael Honigstein has posted on Twitter how the media/clubs work.

..here's how it goes. a hypothetical case.
1. Club or manager unhappy with big player but afraid to say so publicly.
2. Newspaper briefed off the record about that unhappiness.
3. Story comes out, making it a major topic, putting pressure on player.
4. Club/manager go on the record, stating that story not true.
5. Paper look silly but will suck it up in order to get next story.
6. Fans blame anti-xyz bias in media and club/manager say "we all need to stick together now".
7. Go to 1. Run

Juventus have agreed a deal for Manchester United contract rebel Paul Pogba.
Sportsmail revealed last month that the Italians had outlined a four year contract for the 18-year-old that is expected to earn him a basic £20,000 a week.
His agent Mino Raiola, who represents Manchester City's Mario Balotelli, is also understood to have agreed a commission on the deal of around £1.7million.
The France Under 19 international was left out of United's reserve fixture with West Brom on Tuesday night and has not figured in the recent Premier League games despite travelling with the squad.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has grown frustrated with the protracted negotiations and United will receive training compensation to be determined by FIFA.
Ferguson said he knew nothing of the intentions of Pogba.
'I can't tell you anything about it because I do not know,' said Ferguson.
Pogba follows another major talent - Ravel Morrison - out of the exit door. He signed for West Ham in the transfer window after the champions lost patience with his indiscipline.

Arquimedes Nganga, 46, is seeking £10million damages from the Baptist Union as he claims that, had the church not turned him into a ‘fervent evangelist’ he would have been good enough to play for the Red Devils.
The 46-year-old, who has accused the leaders of the Baptist Union of causing him ‘psychological harm’, said: ‘I could definitely have had a long career in the Premier League.
‘I see a lot of players today who I am not inferior to and perhaps better than.
‘Most midfielders are either defensive or attacking but I was both. I had something new.’
Manchester United have yet to comment.
Someone who made the opposite journey to Nganga is former United and Northern Ireland player Phil Mulryne.
A youth team colleague of David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, he was forced to retire early because of injury and is currently studying to become a Catholic priest.

A Manchester United fans group have demanded cheaper season-ticket prices from next season.

They believe that the club have not invested appropriately in the playing squad and that this lack of outlay should be reflected in more affordable admission.

The chief executive of Manchester United Supporters Trust, Duncan Drasdo, told the Manchester Evening News: "We are throwing down a challenge to [joint chairman] Joel Glazer to cut United fans' season-ticket prices next season.

"Given the lack of squad investment while huge revenues are coming in and the Glazers' constantly dipping into the club's bank account, it is long overdue that the loyal supporters received a cut in their ticket prices."

Drasdo believes that United's investment in the playing squad, much lower than many of their league rivals, does not tally with the amount of money that the club has spent in recent years.

"The Glazers have been responsible for more than £500 million flowing out of Manchester United in fees, charges and other payments relating to their hostile takeover of our club," he claimed.

"Meanwhile the club has actually spent less in net transfer fees than not only our main rivals in Europe and the Premier League [Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham] but also had a lower net spend since 2006 than Aston Villa, Sunderland and Stoke.

"It's worse than that, though - in the last three years United's net transfer spend has been less than Hull, Blackpool and Burnley.

"Only the incredible efforts of Sir Alex Ferguson have allowed us to remain competitive in the Premier League," Drasdo continued.

"At times it feels like he is dragging the team towards a 20th league title by sheer willpower alone.

"However, even Sir Alex's magical touch couldn't bridge that gap in Europe.

"Despite his incredible feats it comes as a huge slap in the face for fans that for all the immense revenues flowing into the club there have been huge ticket price hikes for loyal fans since the Glazers' 2005 takeover."

Sir Alex Ferguson expects Manchester City to spend big again in this summer's transfer window.

The United manager is already focusing on the market ahead of next season following a dramatic final day of the 2011/12 campaign, where his local rivals snatched their first league title in 44 years courtesy of a goal from Sergio Aguero, one of their big-money purchases from 2011.

Acknowledging City's spending power, Ferguson told MUTV he would stick to his tried-and-trusted methods when it came to buying new players.

"We know City are going to spend fortunes, pay stupid money and silly salaries. We know that happens. We can't do anything about that.

"We are not like other clubs who can spend fortunes on proven goods. We invest in players who will be with the club for a long time, who will create the character of the club and the excitement for our fans

"We are good at that and we are going to continue that way."

United Chief Executive David Gill has declared that he will back his manager in the transfer market but is well aware of UEFA's Financial Fair Play plans.

"Funds are available without a doubt," Gill said.

"We can still pay very well in terms of wages and transfer fees. Clearly City have raised the bar again. We have seen that with what they are prepared to pay for players and to them.

"But we need to move on. Financial Fair Play is just around the corner.

"It is a flagship programme for Michel Platini and how that is implemented and the sanctions that are imposed are going to be interesting."

Van Persie a great player when fit but if the figures are right - £24,000,000 and a contract that expires when he is 33 and will cost the club a total of £52,000,000. A total investment of £76,000,000?

Compared to Berbatov - £30,000,000 and £100k a week 4 year deal worth £21,000,000 - £51,000,000 for 48 goals so far, over a million a goal!

Going to be hard to get a similar return from the Van Persie investment.

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Alexander Buttner from Vitesse Arnhem.

The Dutch defender completed his medical on Tuesday and agreed a five-year contract at Old Trafford until 2017.

His new manager Sir Alex Ferguson promptly declared that the 23-year-old is one of the best in the business.

Ferguson told the club's official website: "Alexander is one of the best young left-backs in Europe and we're delighted to sign him.
Options

"He's someone we've been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position."

And Buttner can hardly hide his own excitement at signing for the Red Devils.

He added: "Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life.

"It's a team I have admired for many years now and I can't wait to join my team-mates and play my part in helping the club be successful."

Olivier's xmas twist
21-08-2012, 03:46 PM
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits his side did not get the best out of new signing Robin van Persie during his late appearance in Monday night's defeat against Everton.

The Holland international, United's big summer signing from Arsenal, was brought on for the last 22 minutes with his side trailing to a goal from the excellent Marouane Fellaini.

However, he did not register a shot on target as United failed to threaten Tim Howard's goal in search of an equaliser and Ferguson admitted they lacked a cutting edge.
Not enough

"We played around him too much, we didn't show enough penetration," said Ferguson."With Robin in your team you know you want to use his ability against centre-backs in situations he is very good at - but we didn't use him enough."

Ferguson, who saw his side fail to win their opening fixture for the first time since 2008, admitted they failed to cope with Fellaini at the other end as the Everton midfielder dominated a patched-up defence.

Midfielder Michael Carrick pushed into service as an emergency centre-back because of injury to Rio Ferdinand and Antonio Valencia was deployed at right back.

"He (Fellaini) is a handful: he is a big, tall, gangly lad and they just lumped the ball forward to him, that's all they did," added Ferguson.

"They worked from that base all the time and they got a goal from him, so it's justified."Centre-back is a problem but we coped quite well, I don't think you can criticise their performance in that respect.

"It was just difficult to handle him when they were knocking these balls up to him.

"Michael did fine, good on the ball and applied himself well, they all applied themselves well."

Goalkeeper David de Gea was in excellent form in the first half and had it not been for him Everton could have been well ahead by the interval.
Better

"We were the better football team, they had eight shots on target and De Gea did very well for us in that way," he told MUTV.

"But we had the possession and made some great openings without actually finishing it.

"That was the only difference. These shots on targets the goalkeeper did really well.

"Other than that we played good football, good combination play, on another day we would have won the match."

OLYMPIC champ Usain Bolt is being lined up to play for Manchester United against Real Madrid.
The sprint king — who is a huge Red Devils fan — could appear in a glittering friendly next season.
Bolt, 25, was guest of honour at United’s first home game of the season against Fulham, when fans cheekily urged boss Sir Alex Ferguson to “sign him up”.
Now Ferguson, 70, has hinted he could make the Jamaican’s lifelong ambition come true.
He told Inside United magazine: “Usain’s a character and a big United fan.
“But it’s interesting he says he’d like to play in a charity game. It could be brilliant, and next year when we play Real Madrid’s Legends again, there could be opportunities to bring him up and see how he does.”
Just last month, Bolt told The Sun he would happily quit athletics for a spot in the United squad.
Fergie also revealed how he cashed in after backing Bolt to win the 100m and 200m at the London Games.
He said: “I must thank him because that was my biggest bet. Bolt was 4/5 to win each of them a week before the Olympics started. It was a brilliant bet.”
Ferguson added: “I watched all the Olympics. For us to get 29 gold medals was terrific. It was probably the most uplifting thing that’s happened in Britain for a long, long time.”

Brazilian side Santos have rubbished reports suggesting that Manchester United tabled a big-money bid for Neymar on transfer deadline day.

It has been suggested that the Premier League outfit put a £38million offer to Santos prior to the summer window slamming shut.

Having missed out on Neymar's countryman Lucas Moura to Paris St Germain, Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly turned his attention to a player who has attracted interest from Europe's biggest clubs.

The 20-year-old Samba sensation has long been linked with a switch to Spain, with Primera Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona prepared to battle it out for his signature.

United were understood to be hoping a late swoop would see their efforts pass under the radar, allowing them to wrap up a deal before rival clubs could offer a response.
Not true

Santos, though, insist they were never contacted by United.

The South American outfit have always maintained that they are happy for Neymar to remain in his homeland for as long as he wants, and he has offered no indication that he is looking to move on.

On the bid rumours, Santos' football director Felipe Faro told Globo Esporte: "I have no idea where that came from, but it's not true."

Neymar's father, Neymar Santos, has also sought to distance his son from the reports.

He said, with tongue firmly in cheek: "Neymar was sold two years ago but we are still here."

Robin van Persie says it is a 'special' feeling being one of the only players to have worked under both Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

Just a handful of players have featured for both Manchester United and rivals Arsenal over the course of their careers, while Holland international Van Persie and former France defender Mikael Silvestre are the only two to play under both managers.

The United striker, who left the Gunners for Old Trafford over the summer, has good memories of all of the coaches he has worked under, but says the experience of having been managed by both Ferguson and Wenger is particularly special.

"I have had special coaches all in their own way," he told OnsOranje, the official fanclub of the Dutch FA"(Bert) van Marwijk, Wenger, (Marco) van Basten, Ferguson. Piece by piece they are special."I think I have been (one of) the only players ever who has worked under Wenger and Ferguson. That's special."

Van Persie has announced himself at Old Trafford with four goals in his first three games but berated himself for his penalty miss against Southampton last time out.

However, the striker went on to redeem himself with two more strikes after that blunder to win the game and feels his response was a sign of his maturity as a player.
Disappointments

"A career won't be always a bed of roses. You have disappointments," he said.

"Look at my missed penalty kick against Southampton last Sunday. That is what you call a disappointment.

"Taking a penalty kick in that way when you are 2-1 behind. That's just bad.

"I couldn't explain it, not even to myself. And what you do next? Do you stay disappointed? Or are you going to hunt, and get over it?

"In the game I put it behind me, thankfully. Many people can get swept up after something like that. It's happened to me (before) and it's all over then.

"Someone who is 18 years old wouldn't score two times after it. I wouldn't have done a couple of years ago.

"You have to be lucky, but you also have to force it."

Sir Alex Ferguson has called for an end to the hostility between old foes Manchester United and Liverpool.

The clubs have a long history and a bitter rivalry both on and off the pitch.

But following this week's release of the Hillsborough Independent Panel's report - which cleared Liverpool supporters of any blame in the 1989 tragedy in which 96 supporters died - Ferguson is keen for a better relationship and more friendly rivalry to develop.

"We are two great clubs, ourselves and Liverpool," said Ferguson, ahead of Saturday's clash with Wigan.

"We should understand each other's problems. Maybe a line will be drawn in the sand in terms of their behaviour towards each other."The teams face each other next weekend at Anfield, and will be hoping for none of the controversy of last season.

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches after racially abusing Patrice Evra when the sides met last October at Anfield.

He then refused to shake the defender's hand before the game at Old Trafford in February this year, sparking an ill-tempered game which United won 2-1.

MANCHESTER UNITED and England fans will only know if Wayne Rooney peaked early when he turns 28.
That is the verdict of former Three Lions defender Gareth Southgate, who has questioned whether the superstar striker is past his best.
Rooney, 26, burst onto the scene as a precocious teenager at Everton, before moving to United for £27million in 2004.
He was one of the standout performers of Euro 2004 as a fearless 18-year-old but has failed to hit the same heights in an England shirt since.
Gone are the days when people mentioned Rooney in the same breath as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo suggesting that, despite an enviable record of 182 goals in 368 games for United, he could be on the decline.
Southgate said: “He’s still a young man so hopefully we’re still to see the best of him.

“But some players peak young and their best years are earlier than others.
“We won’t know with Wayne Rooney if that’s the case until he’s 28-30.”
One player who, by his own admission, peaked early as a player is Michael Owen.
The ex-Liverpool striker was the boy wonder of England alongside Southgate at World Cup 98, scoring an unforgettable goal in the second-round defeat to Argentina.
Injuries blighted the latter part of his career as he struggled to get on the pitch during his spells at Newcastle and Manchester United.
Owen signed a one-year deal at Stoke this summer and his Potters strike partner Peter Crouch has not ruled out the possibility of their little and large combination earning the duo England recalls.
Southgate, however, cannot see Owen adding to his 89 caps and 40 goals for his country due to his fitness problems.
The pundit said: “Being at Manchester United was a quite a good scenario for someone like Michael.
“Physically it’s very difficult for him to get on the field every week. He wasn’t able to do that three or four years ago, I don’t see him being able to do that now.
“At United, he was able to come into the side, make an impact and not have to play every week.”
