The overwhelming feeling I get is that quality signings change the way everyone feels at a club, they create a buzz of excitement amongst the fans and players.
Sometimes signings are the answer.
Yep. This is something we've been desperate for for years, it's driven fans to breaking point and created a nasty atmosphere. Now we're all singing from the same song sheet and looking forward to the games ahead, hopefully the positivity reflects in the performances.

But to convince someone to reject psg amd united, even if they have moyes, must have taken something special. Exciting times

convincing a player to come is one thing, getting the best out of him and everyone else in the squad is something else.
we also have to remember that wenger is getting on. he can't and won't be around forever. other people can do his job. he's not irreplaceable, if that was the case, the future of the club is completely fucked.
the only irreplaceable thing is the club itself.
where united screwed up is getting a replacement for gill and fergie at the same time. their negotiation method was as bad as ours has been before now. if they had paid a few more mill, they would've got some of the guys they wanted.

In 2013, no English has picked up more points then arsenal. Wenger is clearly getting his players to do the right thing and getting them to play. Ok, some games, the big ones, he got it wrong. Spurs away, Munich at home for example. But while I doubted him this summer, amd still not happy it took this long to get a signing, he's pulled it out the bag at the last minute. A big deal, a geniunine world class player.
There have been doubts about him and his management, rightly so, the last few days have given me such a buzz that I'm happy to back him again. He hasn't done enough to earn a new contract yet, but since spurs away in march. We have lost once. Keep that form up and who knows? Right now, I'm happy to give him full support but don't feel he deserves a new deal just yet.

John Cross - Ozil move was planned 3 months in advance
Long read:
Mesut Ozil is a “special talent” who has left a huge gap in Real Madrid’s dressing room after his record breaking £42m transfer to Arsenal.
Ozil’s stunned former team mates yesterday expressed their shock at the deal and also that Real Madrid allowed the German - rated by Jose Mourinho as the best No10 in the world - to leave the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos said: “I am very unhappy after the exit of Ozil. For me, he was a friend and a companion. Mesut is a special footballer who generates and plays the beautiful side of the game.
“If it was up to me then he would never have left. But it was the choice of the club. But I am totally convinced he will be a star at Arsenal.
“He is the king of the assist. I know Santi Cazorla well and together they will be an enormous spectacle. But I will miss him.”
That shows the level of respect and admiration for Ozil at Real Madrid but also puts into context Arsenal’s delight in pulling off the second biggest deal in Premier League history as they have signed a genuine world class player.
Mirror Sport can reveal that Arsenal’s stunning move into the big league was anything but a last minute panic deal and the first seeds of the Ozil deal were sewn three months ago.
And in another great irony, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who was believed to be holding up the Gareth Bale deal to Real Madrid so the Spanish club would not sell players to Arsenal, was left high and dry during the North London derby.
While Levy was in the boardroom at the Emirates, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis was in Madrid brokering the deal on Sunday afternoon, transfer fixer Dick Law was in Germany for negotiations with Ozil’s father and agent Mustafa as they enjoyed a win double over Spurs on and off the pitch.
Gazidis, who used to work in the MLS, has known Real Madrid director general Jose Angel Sanchez for more than ten years after striking up contacts when the Spanish club tried to market themselves in the US.
Right at the start of the summer, when it was clear that Bale’s move may impact on whether Real Madrid would have to offload players, Arsenal made contact and asked to be kept informed on Ozil, Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria.
But Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has always liked Ozil and tried to sign him three years ago before he moved to Real Madrid. Wenger has described him as his “dream player”, small, technical and a player who enjoys being coached and is willing to learn.
Three weeks ago, Real Madrid put out soundings about all three and at first none wanted to leave the Bernabeu. But it was Wenger who made the crucial phone call on Saturday, talked Ozil through Arsenal’s plans, ambitions and even where he would fit into the team.
Wenger, who is fluent in German, impressed Ozil with his message while Per Mertesacker also rang Ozil and by Saturday night Arsenal felt the deal was on.
Gazidis and Law flew out on Sunday morning, Ozil had bigger offers on the table from PSG, there was late interest from Manchester United, but was won round by Arsenal.
Arsenal’s majority shareholder Stan Kroenke was in constant contact by phone and was happy to give his full backing to a stunning £42m deal which has blown away English football.
They shook hands on the deal by Sunday night and completed by Monday morning after Arsenal’s doctor Gary O’Driscoll flew out to oversee the medical.
Ozil, a third generation Turkish-German and practising Muslim, is described by the Arsenal officials who have met him as being humble, very keen to learn and it is that part of his character which made him particularly keen to work with Wenger.
Arsenal say his father and adviser Mustafa insisted upon the club, in their in-house interviews for the website, making it clear just how much he admired Wenger and wanted to work with him to develop as a player.
After months of criticism and ridicule over transfer policy, the major players have come up trumps. Wenger, Gazidis, Law and Kroenke were the keys to the deal which has shocked English football, lifted Arsenal and stunned Ozil’s former Real Madrid team mates.
Real Madrid’s former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa said: “I am a bit surprised, it’s a shame and a big loss in the dressing room, for the human and footballing aspects.
“He said goodbye last weekend, but I thought it was a practical joke. He is different, there is nobody like him in the world. He makes the difference.
“The club have their reasons. But we look forward, we have great players. For the fans it will be hard, they were close to him. He is a phenomenon, everyone took to him very well. It is a transfer that is very hard.”
Former Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster said: “Arsenal is the perfect destination, Wenger is a great coach for him, my surprise is that anyone would allow a player of that quality to leave.”

Great to have something to look forward to at the club again. Anticipation and a feeling the dive has not only shallowed out but has suddenly become a steep climb. Apparently Wenger made a late bid for Rooney too. It sounds like further funds are at the ready and could be spent in January so this trend can continue. All eyes on Arsenal for a change.

Daniel Levy reports Arsenal to FA:
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is continuing to attempt to prevent Real Madrid selling Mesut Ozil to arch-rivals Arsenal in a £42.5m deal, according to reports in Spain.
Levy spent the summer negotiating the sale of Gareth Bale to the Spanish club for a world-record fee of £86m, but he is believed to be a cunt after being told the Germany international was not for sale only to see him arrive at the Emirates on deadline day. He will now ask the FA to rule Osil ineligible on the grounds that CHips Keswick repeatedly sang 'one nill to the Arsenal' in his face and then pulled an Osil 11 short over his bald head.
Spurs had enquired whether Ozil was available, with a view to working a player exchange into the Bale deal that would see the 24-year-old head to White Hart Lane, but having announced an agreement had been reached on Sunday evening for Bale’s departure, Levy was furious to see Arsene Wenger making wanker gestures to him while butchering the Stevie Wonder hit 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered.'
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial has claimed that Levy personally called Real president Florentino Perez a 'complete bastard' on Monday after failing to talk them out of the sale, with the two clubs having entered a 'partnership' agreement when they agreed the transfer of Luka Modric last season.
Levy has taken legal advice from the same firm of lawyers who Manchester united claim had no authortity to approach Athletico Bilbao with their interest in Anders Herrera and feel confident that English Football's governing body will feel sorry for his club.

I dont know what ancelotti is thinking, with Özil he at least had a guy who was willing to assist... Now he just have 4 people in the front who are all about scoring goals (that is, if the starting line up is benzema on top and c.ronaldo, isco & bale behind)
To be fair he has doubled the amount of players who can strike a dramatic pose before taking a free kick.

You assume the manager at Real Madrid has any say on transfers?
Nah not when it comes to buying players like bale and c.ronaldo, but i think he has a saying in selling a player if he would actually use him, but he quickly showed he would rather use Isco

its 71 quid with name, booking fee and postage i think. shirt price alone is 50ish. still a stupid amount of money. but if you want the shirt with a name, its much cheaper to go to shop. then its closer to 60 quid. but the marquee signing is making people buy. the club could learn this lesson

Utd fans are pretty bitter today.
Ozil (yes, the same Ozil that was playing in Madrid, not some new Ozil but the real deal) is:
A luxury.
Not as good as Kagawa.
Settling for us because Utd decided they didn't want him.
A fraud, feeding off the talents of Ronaldo and Benzema.
Meanwhile people who actually know something about football say:
Germany under-21 manager Horst Hrubesch once said, "We in Germany are prone to rave about foreign players. We praise Wayne Rooney to the heavens, likewise Ronaldo or Messi. But we have our own Messi. Our Messi is Özil." In the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier against Belgium he scored a goal which has been described as a "work of art." Germany coach Joachim Löw hails Özil for his 'genius moments' and his performance without the ball.
Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso described Özil as "the kind of player you don't find these days," adding, "He understands the game, sees things, combines and thrives between the lines, unlocking teams," while José Mourinho said, "Ozil is unique. There is no copy of him – not even a bad copy." Mourinho also stated that, "He is the best number 10 in the world. Everyone loves him and sees a bit of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane in him. He will make history at Real Madrid."
Assistant coach of the Germany national football team Hans-Dieter Flick says, "We are proud to have him in our team. When he has the ball, you can feel the excitement and astonishment among the fans." Former Holland international Ruud Gullit labelled German Özil as a "technically perfect" player who has "total control of the ball" and has "great imagination".
Let's hope the Utd fans aren't right :haha:
Also the man himself is supposed to have:
said he wouldn't want to go to a city as ugly as Manchester.
If true, it sounds like he already knows a lot about England.
And that dreadful haircut.

And I have a feeling the outrage about this sale is also a little to do with the fact that Wenger paid such big money for him. Had Chelsea or Man City got him for £42m, they wouldn't have cared so much IMO because those teams are used to pissing away huge sums. While outside of England we were still known to be desperate to sign a top player, I don't think it was as apparent. Wenger has a big reputation for being stingy/careful with money and the fact that he has paid a lot for him is making them think a bit more than they should.

Maybe my imagination but kind of had the impression that other clubs viewed us as upstarts this summer. E.g. the constant procession of Liverpool connected mouthpieces asking why Suarez would want to move to us (hint: it's money).
After all clubs should know their place on the footballing food-chain, right? People find it easier to accept when some grotesquely wealthy crook simply pisses money up the wall to buy success, because really what can you do against that?
But a club that's self-made? That's like your getting ideas above it's station.
In the last 8 years we've earned our reputation as also-rans, a selling club not a genuine contender.
No-one wants to see an opposition club undergo a paradigm shift. People were shitting their breeks over Tottnumbs summer.
The question is still whether Ozil is just the beginning of our "escalating financial firepower" or just a large but ultimately token gesture. We won't know until January, when the Wenfer Bingo starts rolling again.

I can't see us being so staunch in our refusal to sell him to you in the summer, just to then sell him to you in January. In some ways it would be worse.
We'll sell him next summer that's for sure, but we'll hope against all hope it'll be abroad. Barring a huge bid from someone like City. Saying that, part of me wonders whether we'd have preferred the money this summer, provided he left the country. And when it was obvious that would never come we changed our tune from saying we'd consider ~£55m to him simply not being for sale, though I guess him acting like a dick didn't help either.

Would it be too mental even for Madrid if they went and bought Ozil back off you?
I can't really remember a more popular player though. So far as you guys are 100% behind it in that he's a great signing and not a complete arsehole, RM fans are up in arms and even some of their players aren't happy. Little bit coup tbf.

When 20,000 Real Madrid fans flocked to the Bernabeu on Monday to witness the unveiling of their latest galactico, it wasn't only Gareth Bale's name they chanted.
"Don't sell Ozil" echoed around the famous stadium, to the visible discomfort of club president Florentino Perez.
When, hours later, midfielder Mesut Ozil's £42.4m transfer to Arsenal was confirmed, the mourning could begin in earnest.
Real star Cristiano Ronaldo said he was "angry" about the Germany international's departure, while defender Sergio Ramos tweeted a picture of himself holding his now former team-mate's last Madrid shirt as he lamented the loss of "the king of the assist". A poll of Real fans in Spanish sports daily AS revealed 66% opposed his transfer.
Their disappointment is easy to understand. Over the past five seasons, 24-year-old Ozil has provided more assists and created more chances than any other player in Europe's top five leagues.
In a direct statistical comparison with Bale, also 24, Ozil is top in almost every category. While Real's higher standing than Spurs may explain his better tally of assists and chances, the German also has a superior shooting accuracy, as well as a higher completion of passes, crosses and dribbles.
"Whenever I speak to Barcelona fans about which [rival] player they would most like to have in their team, the one who would merge most fluently with their style, they always say Ozil," Spanish football expert John Carlin told BBC Sport.
"He's got a very quick football mind and is immensely skilful. He is one of those players who needs less time than other players. His exquisite touch gives him that extra fraction of a second to look up and see the gap and put the ball there for a goalscorer."
Ozil's national coach, Joachim Low, described Real's decision to sell the player as "incomprehensible".
Carlin, who wrote a book about Real Madrid during David Beckham's time at the club and pens a weekly football column for Spanish newspaper El Pais, believes the explanation for Ozil's sale lies less in manager Carlo Ancelotti's tactical plans, and more in Perez's impulsive nature.
"Perez is extremely capricious," said Carlin. "An avid art collector, you could give him all the Picasso and Dali paintings in the world, and he would still want to buy up the Miros.
"He has this acquisitive lust. And so, when [21-year-old Spain international] Isco came on the market, Real didn't really need him, but he is beautiful and Perez knew that if Real didn't buy him, someone else would.
"Once he was bought, there was always going to be pressure on Ancelotti to make sure Isco played, even though Ozil is much more the final product. When you throw Bale and [Croatia midfielder] Luka Modric into the mix you have a problem, and something had to give."
That something was Ozil, the son of Turkish immigrants, who grew up in Gelsenkirchen playing football on a fenced-off gravel pitch known as "the monkey cage".
Having come through the youth system at Schalke, Ozil moved to Werder Bremen in January 2008 at the age of 19 and helped the club reach the Uefa Cup final.
English audiences got their first glimpse of him during the 2009 European Under-21 Championship, when he was a key part of the Germany side that destroyed England 4-0 in the final.
"Even at the age of 17, Ozil was already making scouts very excited, but that tournament was the real breakthrough," recalls Tor-Kristian Karlsen, who spent 15 years working as a scout for leading European clubs, including German side Bayer Leverkusen and Zenit St Petersburg of Russia.
"He was absolutely outstanding and that really established him in people's consciousness. He was part of a very, very exciting generation of young German players who were quickly catapulted into the national team."
Ozil was an instant success at full international level, starring in Germany's 4-1 victory over England and 4-0 demolition of Argentina at the 2010 World Cup to earn himself a place in Fifa's team of the tournament and a move to Real Madrid.
When he wasn't setting up goals for Ronaldo and helping Real topple Barcelona to win the league title in 2011-12, Ozil lived a quiet life off the pitch, avoiding the Madrid celebrity circuit.
A practising Muslim, he recites the Koran before matches and observes fasting during Ramadan as much as his sporting commitments allow.
At Arsenal, Ozil will join international team-mates Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, and a German-speaking manager who shattered his club's transfer record to sign him.
Ozil says the faith shown in him by Arsene Wenger persuaded him to move, and according to Carlin, the set-up at the Emirates should be ideally suited to a player who needs to feel wanted.
"If there is one doubt about him, he is a player who can sometimes drift out of the reckoning in games," said Carlin.
"He needs a lot of love from the manager. He is a beautiful flower who is a bit frail, but if he is well looked after, he will deliver."
Ozil's signing prompted an ecstatic reaction from Gunners players and fans. Podolski, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have all tweeted enthusiastically about their new team-mate, while shirt sales at the club's online shop are 12 times higher than usual.
Karlsen, who left his post as Monaco chief executive in March, believes Ozil is a "great fit" for the Londoners. He is concerned, however, by over-inflated expectations that even a player of Ozil's pedigree could struggle to live up to.
"Ozil's game is all about finesse, intuition and creativity so Arsenal's style is ideally suited to his talents," said Karlsen.
"But we have to give him time because English football is very different to what he is used to. Players are more aggressive and will deny him the space he is used to in Spain.
"He is one of many top attacking midfielders who have joined Premier League clubs in the transfer window, including Willian at Chelsea, [Stevan] Jovetic at Manchester City and [Erik] Lamela at Spurs. Only time will tell whether Ozil can prove himself the best of the bunch."
Mourned in Madrid, already adored at Arsenal. Ozil has a lot to live up to.

Also shows stats comparing him to inferior players such as Messi, Xavi, Iniesta etc and a direct comparison with Bale

That's it, if another £30mill heads out the door in January then they can all start bricking their pants.
But if we sell Ozil and Cazorla that will probably send a different message.
It was a schizophrenic summer, that's why I'm still not sure.
Not that Özil was a panic buy, but there is still a whiff of opportunism about it, and of needs must.
After spending all that time posturing about what we could now afford, the extra pressure of an opening day loss, and our transfer inactivity, the club wanted and needed a marquee signing.
I don't think for a minute Ozil was on the shopping list initially. We really wanted a forward, but it all came down to circumstance and the club figured 'fuck it, it's more than we wanted to pay, but we have to do something'.
2 freebies and a goalie don't put bums on seats.
Signing Ozil is great, but it tells us little about the sustainability of this kind of outlay. If this is our new threshold, ~£45m per year, we can be back challenging within 2. If not, then we'll find our level.
Either way, I'd expect the usual round of 'The market is very difficult in January'.

To be fair the market genuinely is difficult in January. But something has happened this summer, it would have been impossible to listen to another round of excuses in January otherwise. I don't think the fee is expensive at all, when a player like that comes up and somehow city and utd and the chavs don't get first bite then you have to act if you are in a position to do so and have any ambition at all. You can't let a player like that sail past especially as Wenger has wanted to sign him for a while. So it probably wasn't planned but it was an unmissable opportunity when it presented itself.
There's also a suggestion we were set to hand over a pile of cash to HMRC if we didn't get rid of the money elsewhere, not sure if that's true but if it is it's even sweeter, getting a great player as well as denying the thieving government pigs. Pissed off the spuds, turned Levy from a hero to a bitter little troll rushing around trying to scupper our plans and failing, made Utd look cheap, piled more pressure on Moyes, pissed of Madrid and divided their fans, poured cold water on Bale's unveiling, made Martin Samuel and his media buddies cry.
This deal absolutely had to be done, it was as if the stars aligned in a once in a lifetime pattern. Although it's twice for us now because we had Dennis Bergkamp too!

Precisely correct.
So many priceless things rolled into one.
Wenger's comment about sometimes having to pay over the odds suggests he at least didn't think the price was inexpensive. Old habits will die hard I suspect.
Obviously we all hope this is new start, signing Ozil was hard, keeping hold of him will be harder if we don't keep investing.
Players like this don't stick around in second tier teams.

He's a level above most of the players in the team, so hopefully they all raise their game now. He'll be gone in a few seasons if we repeat what's gone on recently.
it's quite amazing what one real display of intent has done to the supporters belief.
what has been forgotten is the fact this is wenger's last year of his contract, which many - and perhaps growing into most in recent months - and hoped would be his last.
so the question is where does this leave the contract from both the directors point of view and the supporters? and wenger himself?

Yeah he's given fans hope again with this signing and beating spurs. I said elsewhere, no other team in 2013 has picked up more points then we have. Since spurs in march we have only lost to villa. He's doing something right clearly, but doubts still remain about the big games. At the moment, no new contract, but if by February we are still heavily competing in tournaments, maybe have some good signings amd team playing well then I feel he will probably deserve one but I'd hold offering it completely until end of season amd judge them

A few years is a lil bit different than a solitary season, something RVP would not have been expecting at all. He probably thought in a couple years he'll head off for a big contract in Saudi or the US anyway, after collecting a few of Fergie's last trophies. It's perfectly logical to assume that Wenger signed Ozil for Arsenal and our future.
Fergie retiring has probably woken Wenger up to the fact he actually can retire, it will act as a form of inspiration that he can step away from his obsessiveness. You seem pretty sure he wants to stick around buy I wouldn't be so confident. He has been battered from all sides for a while now and we've seen it take its toll on him. He's not a young man anymore. I don't think there is any certainty that he will stay on past this season.

Its done nothing to change my belief. Signing Ozil with hours to spare ( which COULD have been sabotaged by the Mancs at last minute ) is nothing short of disgraceful bearing in mind:
1, The amount of time we had to operate in the window.
2, The early business & stress-free transfer operated by the Spuds & Manc Shity for quality players.
3, The money Gazidis said was available ( before we had sold Gervinho & qulified for C.L )
4, Players around the world would love to play in EPL. Most of these would also love C.L football. Only the best would be guaranteed 1st team football at both Manc clubs & Chelski & with the world cup coming up they would not want to risk only playing limited football this year. This leaves Arsenal as the ONLY club able to offer everything.
5, The fact that we haven't bought at least one more defender & a quality striker when its obvious to the tea-lady how weak we are in these areas especially when injuries kick in.
Absolute madness from Wenget & the board - I will love the Frenchman for the rest of my life for what he has done for my club but it's time for "Denis the Menace" to come home & take us forward.

Whether Soldado is better than Giroud or not doesn't matter, I think he's good enough for us on the basis he's obviously better than Sanogo and Bendtner at least.
Paulinho should be compared to Ramsey/Wilshere, so I don't really think we're missing out on anything there.

Spurs had a servicable central midfield, a decent defence that as exposed by our quality, and a bunch of forwards who play like they hate each other. This is why they had so much posession but it all fizzled out in the final third, and their failure to score from open play so far.

Last time I checked - they've always taken strikers to tournaments - the fact they sometimes play without an out an out striker is neither here or there - that's purely down to a managers tactical preference.

Bottom line is when they have taken strikers in squads - Soldado is one of the ones taken, in fact Michu cant even make the squad at the moment.

The problem is that patience is running thin on the ground around here after the last few years. However cripps, I'm surprised by your opinion of him when the same could've been said for chamakh. I agreed with you that he was doin ok and probably would've gone on to be much better if he wasnt dropped for RVC and hardly ever played again.
Giroud will be fine and probably better now that he has he worlds greatest assister playing with him!

La Liga is pretty shit when you exempt the top 2 teams there. So yes, I could see Giroud poaching 20 goals a season against other shit Spanish opponents and thus warranting a call up to the Spanish Nat'l team.
Soldado didn't play for the top 2 teams though and still got 20+ a season.
Giroud played in a shitter league and was unheard of before firing Monty to the title

Giroud can do the business, he did it at Montpellier.

I had patience for this team back then. Thinking it might come good.
Patience is gone. Seeing the same shit time and time again would kill anyone's hope and enthusiasm for this once great club.
The signing of Ozil is awesome and a start but we need a lot more

Your 1st paragraph here is exactly what I'm alluding to.
I think Giroud could get 20 goals a season too, in a shit Spanish team against other shit Spanish teams.

Whats that got to do with making the Spanish squad??
Last time I checked - they've always taken strikers to tournaments - the fact they sometimes play without an out an out striker is neither here or there - that's purely down to a managers tactical preference.
Bottom line is when they have taken strikers in squads - Soldado is one of the ones taken, in fact Michu cant even make the squad at the moment.
Please tell me you don't think Giroud is better than Michu... :coffee:
So they choose to take strikers but then decide they would rather play a midfielder up front instead of a striker. Says a lot about the quality of strikers if the manager would rather play a midfilder up front then an actual striker

You saying Giroud is better than David Villa then....
