He apparently quit via email.

The CEO received it while he was in Holland wrapping up the signing of a player McLeish requested.

Birmingham chief Peter Pannu insists that the club will not be giving Alex McLeish permission to talk to any clubs.
McLeish quit the Second City outfit on Sunday, via email, and is now believed to be in contention to take charge at arch-rivals Aston Villa. (http://topics.skysports.com/Aston+Villa/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif
But acting chairman Pannu (http://topics.skysports.com/Peter+Pannu/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif says the club will try and block efforts, as they have been left angered by McLeish's departure.
"To get an email when I am on business in Amsterdam (http://topics.skysports.com/amsterdam/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif speaks volumes," said Pannu.
"We have spent £40m and supported him all the way and what we get is a relegation and a snub."
Deals in place

Pannu insists they were totally behind McLeish, and offered the example that they have agreed deals for four new players this summer.
Marlon King (http://topics.skysports.com/Marlon+King/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and Chris Burke (http://topics.skysports.com/Chris+Burke/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif have both signed, whilst deals for Dutch star Danny Koevermans (http://topics.skysports.com/Danny+Koevermans/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and Dundee United's (http://topics.skysports.com/Dundee+United/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif Morgaro Gomis were also in place.
"Carson (Yeung, Birmingham owner) gave him unwavering support and did not sack him and declared his job secure and professed trust and confidence in him," he continued.
"So much so that we have just negotiated for four of his new first-choice players. I won't blame any outside clubs yet until I find out more.
"He is still our contracted staff and Birmingham City does not grant him any right to speak to any outsiders until the matter is resolved.
"I will be meeting my legal team and rest assured I will leave no stones unturned.
"It's about time some discipline is instilled into this game and I am unfortunately not a person who gets pushed about."

Oh dear

It gets worse....

Birmingham City have refused to accept Alex McLeish's resignation as manager and are seeking financial compensation, BBC Sport understands.

The Scot has been linked with a move to Aston Villa but Blues have received no official approach from Villa Park.

"Birmingham will hold McLeish to his contract unless a compensation payment is thrashed out," said BBC 5 live's Midlands football reporter Pat Murphy.

RIght. So McLeish can accept their refusal and carry on in the manager role but make a half-hearted effort and/or know that the team have no positive direction now he has indicated a desire to go. lol. Whoever at Birmingham City has come out with the line to refuse to accept it is not living in the real world. How do you 'make' a manager manage a team to the best of his ability without the players knowing it is all bollocks? It is laughable.

They're going Gullit-crazy on there now...

I will reserve judgment on any of this until we get something concrete from the club, and the club only(remember that?)

Surely if Lerner gauged opinion on McClaren he wouldn't go and appoint McLeish the next week?

Which leads me to think that the dropping of Macca as a contender never actually happened, as he was never a contender in the first place. The Evening Mail mentioned him a lot a week or so ago in the usual quote-less fashion, and it was to that point (picked up by the nationals) that caused all the opprobrium.

Otherwise of course you're absolutely right, it just wouldn't make any sense. Though the smart money suggests now though, that that is what's happening... Oh goody.

Ruud Gullit has been sacked as manager of Russian side Terek Grozny.

Gullit, 48, was appointed Terek boss in January, but had been told by club president Ramzan Kadyrov that Terek must win at Amkar Perm on Tuesday.

After a last-minute goal condemned them to a 1-0 defeat, Kadyrov told Interfax: "Gullit will no longer train Terek. Under him, the team have played exceptionally poorly this season."

The result leaves Terek lying 14th in the 16-team Russian Premier League.

"I don't think it would have mattered if I had won or lost," said Gullit, who has also had spells in charge of Chelsea, Newcastle, Feyenoord and LA Galaxy.

On his arrival in Chechnya he was given the target of taking Terek to a top-eight position in the league by mid-season, but managed only three wins in 13 games in charge.

In a statement on the club's website before the Amkar Perm game, Kadyrov, who is also the Chechen president, said he was "extremely dissatisfied" with Gullit's performance.

"Considering all this, Ramzan Kadyrov is presenting Ruud Gullit with the task of bringing back three points from Perm," continued the statement.

"In the event of the opposite outcome, Gullit will be dismissed from the position of head coach."

Gullit, a former world player of the year and one of the most successful players in the history of Dutch football, signed an 18-month contract when he joined Terek.

The Russian government had invested significant political hopes in the Chechen team's sporting success, in an attempt to move forward after two decades of ruinous conflict with the breakaway region.
