Well no but this is fairly standard for when a manager leaves. Everyone involved with the first team was under Wenger’s watch. The new bloke will definitely want his own crew around him and in every corner of the club. Someone like Akers probably wouldn’t fit in because he’s so old school.

Now is not the time to be sentimental.

Beggars can't be choosers with our defence. Holding's one of the better ones so far. Let's hope we don't hear any genuinely worrying news like Mustafi signing an extension.

We're entering a new dawn, maybe we could have bought in somebody better. In the old regime, I might have agreed with you.

Yeah but we aren't buying 5 new defenders at the dawn of this dawn. Holding is young and he hasn't been around Wenger long enough to suffer major damage. Same with that Greek kid Stavros, or whatever his name is.

Not totally sold on Holding either but he's definitely shown enough to suggest that under a better coach he can develop into a top CB. He had a good first season but I think he's struggled at times this year but in fairness to him the same can be said for every member of our defence.

Season out on loan would do him good. He needs to be playing regularly, but I do think he has potential.

I agree, he just needs to play week in week out to learn. you don't gain experience by just training and sitting on a bench. I think a year in the championship (as I don't think another Premier League club will look to take him on loan) will do him a lot of good.

The Emirates Gallactico

Gutted for him. Misses the World Cup and with that probably his last chance to represent Les Bleus.

No matter what you think about his captaincy or his mistake against Atletico, he's been one of the few defenders that's looked semi-competent in an Arsenal defence that under Wenger is always firefighting and never structured in a way to prevent goals which is a testament to his skills.

If it is Allegri, it means that he'll need to bring in a Chiellini or someone of similar gravitas to help cover until the new guys are ready.

Xhaka Can’t
08-05-2018, 09:32 AM
I completely agree. Kos can be a bit unpredictable but you have to consider the defence he is part of. Not just in terms of personnel but also with the complete absence of any effective coaching strategy.

Kos works hard and he does care.

Hopefully sentimentality has no place in the new manager's book. 6 months out means we're down a CB. New signing required to take his place. No question. Sport is a competitive business, not a sick house of the kind Wenger has been running all these years.

totally agree - he was often forced into mistakes in the last couple of seasons becuase he was one of the few that gave a s**t and put himself out for the team.

a genuinely world class defender who's been broken by bad management.

he's one of the reasons i actually feel quite angry about Wenger - he can count himself lucky he's had this big send-off after the sh*t he's caused the last few years

I think his career is on a downhill spiral now, probably one of our 2 most overrated footballers, alongside Walcott who is also fading away (although he got most of his career with us), he won't be at Arsenal next season and will in doubt be playing at a lower tier club.

Because even a partial season from him, and he was in good form before he signed that contract, is better than the pub effort of so many of our players this season. If I was a player I'd be embarrassed to get an award for any part of this shitty season. And then I'd go and buy a big car, get some skank as a wife and part-ay.

Players get too much these days to be as focused, dedicated and committed as players before them. Football's fucked. 90% of the players in this league are effectively missing, compared to yesteryear. Very few real pros out there now.

I'm not condoning his selective approach to putting in an appearance, I'm saying what he did in half a season was better than most of the rest did over the whole season. Which is an indictment of the squad in general. Someone else mentioned Auba should get it. He hasn't played a whole season either, for very different reasons, but he's been head and shoulders above the rest since his arrival. Maybe he should get it on that basis alone.

Remember Wenger claiming we had 25-30 internationals a while back, just shows how average we are these days, the squad is vastly overrated, IMO we need a clearout, keepers/defence/midfield need real changes, I'd be very happy to see a completely different team other than a handful of players in a few years time, Wenger built an awful team.

Good, squad should be fresh for pre-season at least.

There is that, but it just shows the lack of quality. Those 8 include about 6 that we all think we should get rid of.

He's on he highest wages in the club and he gets a lot of matches off. I don't believe he's injured at all. He didn't play the last two matches, Wenger giving him a rest before the WC no doubt. It's not on, play for the team and the club.

He's preserving himself for his last World Cup, at the club's expense and most certainly having secured Wenger's blessing or he never could have got away with it. All very undesirable and a giant piss take, but you have to have a Wenger in order to have an Ozil (or any player) with that attitude. Now that Wenger is gone, if the whole philosophy at the club is not reversed 180 degrees we will quickly find we have much, much bigger problems than Ozil.

As for Ozil's future, we start in the position of beggars not being choosers. Who are we going to play in his place, Iwobi? Exactly. He's our best player, along with Aubameyang, and the best we are likely to get in the short term until Wenger's rancid legacy has been purged and the club gets back to some degree of normality.

My worry is Emery has already been bent over by dickheads like Neymar. Hopefully that's a one-off and not a character flaw.

I didn't say we should get rid of him, we won't get much for him now anyway. I'm just hoping Emrey can get something out of him and that he starts behaving like a professional footballer. I don't care that it's his last World Cup, let Germany pay his wages if that's his priority.

Agreed. He's a young player that has plenty of talent but (shock) needs guidance and coaching to improve his overall game.

I'm pretty confident all our players will improve under the new manager. Wenger literally had a hands off, don't even tell them where they are going wrong in case it kills them, approach. Disaster.

Another huge change will be the chain of accountability that surely has to develop. Emery doesn't have Wenger's magic shield. If his players don't perform then he's the guy who'll pay the price. So you have to think he won't be putting up with a lot of the shit that has gone on in the past. He can't afford to. Players who fancy taking mid season holidays or who can't learn to correct their mistakes will be out. Half the players are probably shitting themselves and lamenting an inevitable end to the easy ride. The ones who have a bit of ambition will be relieved. It'll be interesting to find out who's who.

Wide on the right is where I'd play him. Mkhitaryan on the left, Laca in the hole and Aubameyang up top. I bet Ramsey and Laca can form a good partnership in the main engine room where the intensity is high and the effort has to match.

My problem with Ozil is that he was hit & miss before he signed a new deal and since he has signed (350kpw reportedly), he has hardly played & when he has it’s been half arsed. It’s almost as if he decides when he wants to play.

Sorry but for our ‘best player’ that kind of behaviour is bullshit & unacceptable.
If the article is true about the squad not being happy with him then I don’t blame them.

Mhikitarian and Aubameyang have been better players than Ozil and they have only been here 6 months!

If they are shit then they are all shit together, Ozil doesn’t get a free pass, new era or not.

Hit and miss is the very definition of Wenger's Arsenal. Emery's Arsenal hasn't kicked a ball yet. Every member of the squad will be under his scrutiny as he decides who will stay and who will go. Fans have no need to cut of their noses before any of this happens.

Arsenal fans need to get realistic. Even if we signed Messi this window we still wouldn't stop City or Liverpool from winning the league.

This season is about giving players a chance under new instructions and see how the team responds. Much like Klopp's first at Liverpool.

Some fans are starting to sound deluded. Somehow thinking changing the manager will result in us spending 200m instantly without him giving the current players a chance. Get a grip.

Penguin
17-06-2018, 10:41 AM
I doubt anyone thinks we'll instantly turn into title challengers but we need to at least be going in the right direction.

I was hoping a new manager would be objective and get rid of the junk in our squad, but we've given Xhaka a new contract and Emery has called him an important player. The team is apparently going to built around Ramsey - an inconsistent crock with no tactical awareness. Emery also said he prefers to win 5-4 than 1-0. Not the words I want to hear from someone I was hoping would fix our defence.

NQ is right - so far it's been shit. I'll wait and see what actually happens on the pitch but so far I'm not impressed.

To be fair even in the World Cup Xhaka was rubbish, I just don't see what this guy can bring to any top club, he has no real talent, he can't tackle, doesn't read the game well, his passing isn't that amazing and he often gives the ball away, yes he ocasionally gets a goal from long range but that's now much, he makes the likes of Denilson look like a worldie!

This is where we're being left behind, the top clubs are now turning over huge amounts, our lack of competitiveness has really cost us over the years, teams that are successful make so much more money than those that don't.

The year of the Jeff though? With all the focus on AMN could he be the breakthrough star of this season?

Auba and Laca in the same team :cloud9: Emery seems to like those two together which bodes well, so glad we got rid of that prehistoric dinosaur, might see two goalscoring forwards in the 1st team at last.

Yeah, I’m keen to find a way to fit both of thode two into our starting XI, especially now it looks like we’re keeping Perez on as cover - means we don’t have to be quite as sparing with how we use them across a long season.

It’s not just the direct goal threat either - Laca’s actually surprisingly good at hold-up play, and I’m hoping Auba will do that Henry thing where he drifts wide and gives us a shit-ton of pace down the flanks - something we’ll badly need with no tricky winger...

Something like that. I think Emery favours 4231, so I’m hoping he might go for...

——————Leno——————

Bell——Mav——Sok——Monreal

———Torreira——AMN———

Ozil / Miki—-Ramsey——Auba

——————Laca—————

(Although M-Niles starting ahead of Xhaka is probably too much to hope for!)

The way I see it working is Laca stays more or less central, Auba and Ozil / Miki have free(er) roles and go where the play takes them, and Ramsey either gets forward as an extra forward or drops back as a 3rd midfielder as needed. Maybe rotate Ramsey, Ozil and Mhiki on a 2-game-on, 1-game-off policy to keep Ramsey fit (and give Ozil plenty of holiday time).

As I was replying to Blink on the match post, the match against Boreham Wood, it's "lobsided". So Auba on the left is more forward then who ever's on the right, so he constantly cut inside and Lacazette moves in tandem with Auba. Ozil is slightly more inward to allow Bellerin to bomb forward. And he plays one at the base of midfield, so any of AMN, Ramsey and Ozil can potentially bomb forward.

I prefer the 4231 and would love if AMN started the season. I have a heavy suspicion Emery won't though....

Maybe now it looks Laca is well a part of the plans....the wind might blow the wrong way and he might actually crack a smile.

Good on Mesut.

Yes he was shit for most of the World Cup but then so was basically the entire German team. For him to get scapegoated and singled out for Germany's failure was disgusting.

Hoping he's out to prove a point and that's reflected in his performances next season especially now we've got a competent manager who knows how to exploit that.

I just came across a very interesting bit of information that might provide a different perspective to this. In September, UEFA will be deciding which country will host the 2024 European Championships. Apparently the choice is between Germany and Turkey.

So, SMatthews, what would have been your recommendation for him to do?

Personally, I do not think that he has anything more to prove with the German national team. The reality is that from now on, he will always be the scapegoat whenever the German team plays badly or has a bad result. As it is, a not insignificant number of Arsenal fans will be happy to see the back of him. I can only imagine the opprobrium that will be heaped on him should Jack Wilshere score the winning goal for West Ham against Arsenal.

That was idiotic, and he must have known it was going to blow up in his face. I don't agree with the way he's chosen to defend his actions there either - that would have been an easy one to hold his hands up to and just admit that it was a poor decision.

(Although, having said that, I'm not sure what I would have done in Mesut's shoes, especially if I still had any extended family back in Turkey, or harboured any hopes of ever moving there in the future? Erdogan doesn't seem like the kind of person who you easily say no to.)

That being said, the treatment he's received from the German press and the DFB clearly goes way beyond just the photo - the knives have been out, sharpened and ready for him for years, IMO (probably stemming from some loud-mouth at Bayern who took a dislike to him at some point - they usually seem to control the tone of voice for everything in German football), and Özil has stupidly given them the perfect opening to legitimise their discomfort towards his Turkish heritage. Very hard not to agree with some of the points he makes, and that there's no racist and discriminatory undertones to it.

The backlash to this is going to be get really vicious and spiteful now, you watch.

Andreas_AFC

Complete nonsense, pure self-pity. No German newspaper, website, no broadcaster has made Özil's Turkish roots responsible for the catastrophe of the national team. Invented by Özil to become a victim of racist injustice in the media. It's always the same with him. If you criticize him, everyone else is to blame, never himself. He has been photographed with a dictator and I know that many Turks here in Germany (in my circle of friends are some) were disappointed by Özil, almost shocked that he does not question the reality of this man in any way ! He also assumes that every German is a racist who dares to criticize him for his athletic achievements and for his inappropriate photo. Sorry that I judge so Ozil, but his self-importance is unbearable!

Always a mistake for footballers to get involved with politics or make any political statements, seeing as he's living in Germany you'd think he'd be awre of the issues and perhaps stay away from things like this.

Having done so he should have just dealt with the repercussions, retiring and then making comments on twitter was probably not the best move. In a way the guy at Bayern is right, we haven't seen the best of Ozil for years, I don't think he's been great in an Arsenal shirt, but that could also be due to the style of play.

Last time he was at his best was at Real, there's no doubt about his talent, but he needs to deliver more regularly and show what he can do, he'son big money for us now.

Exactly! I've noticed the same damn thing. Most of his chances comes from crosses and cutbacks. He rarely plays a passes that cuts open the defence and gets our strikers one on one with the keeper.

Ozil can fuck off. I've had enough of his half arsed, part time bullshit.

He says he's only treated as a German when he plays well - I think he can also only consider himself an Arsenal player when he turns up and puts a shift in.

We should definitely be selling him this window IMO, I can't stand him anymore.
