Wrong. Gabriel has been an almost ever present in a team that is defying expectations, and is clearly highly regarded by our manager. Fallling into the 'narrative' that he is a liability because of some 'high profile' mistakes ignores the fact that he is the perfect foil for Saliba (who has also made mistakes but is flavour of the month so these are largely glossed over) - doing the dirty work to cover him - which is a good blend for CM's. Our defensive performance this season has been just as much the reason behind our success as our attacking threat, and all defenders make mistakes - particularly when you hold the high line that our team does.

Plus Gabriel is left footed (rare commodity), poses a goal threat and has the passion and committment that the team is thriving on - as witnessed by his goal scoring responses to setbacks.

Is he the complete player, no. Are there elements of his game that can be improved on at 24 years old? Of course. But the manager clearly believes that this can and will happen. Average? Absolutely not.

He’s a very good defender but also happens to be one of those players who can create chaos out of nothing.

People often forget how good a keeper Jens was because he was a fucking nutter.

It is what it is.

Doubt it.

If you're talking about me you can say my name, mate.

Anyway, resigning Saka, and the others makes financial sense.

Saka's value peaked about a year ago anyway. People are wakening up to him being possibly the greatest hype job ever, so they missed the ideal point to sell him.

Hopefully he improves drastically though and becomes deserving of a.place in the team.

Great business on Gabriel. Definitely a little raw still and I doubt he'll ever be a great 'player' but he'll certainly do a job as a big athletic CB, which are always good to have.

I suspect it won’t be long before silly season is upon us with Transfers

Romford Ray thinks we should sign Azzedine Ounahi. Take away the fact that Angiers his club are going to have a massive pay day off anyone who buys him, are we forgetting that in a global scouting network a 22 year old who has never come to anyone’s attention before is playing for a mid table French club?

I think Ounahi had a great tournament, but world cups should not influence transfer policy.

Let the Man United’s of this world carry on wasting money trying to shortcut their way back to the top 4 with purchases like this or Mac Allister (who again was exceptional in the World Cup, but never been anymore than decent for Brighton)

He had his pick of destinations when he let his Spurs contract run down. To come to us was a shitty thing to do

That club took him in at 17 and made him an international…if it had gone the other way…Tony Adams joining Tottenham in his prime…there would have been all the same chants even to this day.

He was given a very generous contract at a time when Arteta was starting out. I guess it’s understandable that a new coach felt he needed experience, but experience can also mean past your best and unmotivated. Which is what we got with Willian.

Sell or Keep?

Keep imo, but the paper trash talk is that we might sell.

Sell if we get a big fee but just keep in mind that he’s probably going to develop into a very good striker at the right club. Could be a Gnabry all over again.

There's a bit in the article about the atmosphere. That might have been true at times but it hasn't been true recently.
I could tell on the TV that the crowd were certainly doing their bit even if some of the players weren't.

Yeah that's a bit silly.

On the topic of women's football though, I do recommend getting down to a game if you can.

It's obviously not the same quality as you'd get at a men's game, but I don't think that's the reason most people go to the football anyway.

It's good fun, a friendly atmosphere and helps you see football from a perspective you're probably not used to seeing it from.

Letters
23-02-2023, 10:28 AM
I got into the Euros a bit and was actively pleased we won. The quality is pretty good - well, from the top few teams. There isn't the quality in depth there is in the men's game, most teams are still cannon fodder. But that's because the women's game is still emerging in many countries, it will change.

But no matter how much it's hyped, it just doesn't feel the same as the men's game. I'm pleased we won the Euros but it didn't "come home". I got a bit fed up of the rhetoric during the Euros, it was like if you weren't behind the women and didn't cheer them on as much as you would the men then you weren't a proper football fan. It's utter bollox.

Marc Overmars
23-02-2023, 10:36 AM
Hopefully the women’s game does continue to grow and stand on its own two feet.

It’s a separate entity though and something that can’t sensibly be compared to the men’s game.

Letters

Exactly that.

But a recent game against Chelsea had an attendance at The Emirates of over 45,000. That wouldn't have happened 10 years ago, or even 5. So interest is clearly growing.
I'll probably get into the next World Cup in a way I'd never have done previously with a women's tournament.

I think because he’s a Chelsea boy that might cloud our judgement, but I’ve always felt he was decent technically and very good in transitions. I don’t care who he plays for. If I thought he was a good player I’d want to sign him. I think too many people had the negative attitude towards Jorginho because he played for Chelsea but I was one of those who thought he was a useful squad signing and I think that’s been borne out.

I felt exactly the same about Jorg (I really must stop agreeing with you, it doesn't feel right ;) ) but truth is i've always thought Mount was a bit of an arsehole and too inclined to use the dark arts, although tbf we probably need some more of that so maybe it would be useful

I've not watched enough of Chelsea to know how good he is these days but as they said on the post-Chelsea Arsecast, we're maybe looking to offload some of our English players (Holding, ESR, maybe Eddie) so I'm guessing they're having to look at replacements to satisfy the 'home-grown' quota

Is it really valid to say we'd have done better against City if he hadn't played? Seems like a stretch.
So I think you need to be a bit careful with stats like this, you're not really comparing like for like.

no, you've pointed out that we have only lost when he's playing, some people might say there's somethig in that.

and yes, given City bypassed our midfield, where Zin's supposed to make a difference, thereby making him irrelevant, then Tierney would have been a better option as he does at least offer more in defence and, I'd argue, in attack

Some people would be awful at analysing data if they did.

The point I was trying to make, which you are deliberately missing, is that it's too simplistic to look at games he played in vs games he didn't this season because by definition they're different games and the sample size for the games he didn't play is pretty small. If he'd played 50% of games and there was a clear difference then it might be a more valid argument.

TL;DR, you need to be a bit careful with statistics.

In fairness to Letters what he’s actually pointing out is that the stats on with Zinchenko vs not with Zinchenko are not exactly fool proof because as he states Zinchenko has played far more games this season than he hasn’t, therefore the averages extrapolated for our stats without Zinchenko come from a much smaller pool of data.

This doesn’t refute your criticism of Zinchenko it’s just the stat box itself is probably not as informative as it could be.

Zinchenko was definitely not an asset for us in any of the four games we lost this season, definitely a poor performer in all four games. I’m not convinced however that his absence would have resulted in us not losing….simply because of other factors involved.

United Away - He was made to look very silly by Antony, but it was arguably Lokonga who gave Eriksen the freedom of the midfield

Everton Away - Absolutely awful, but so was Partey, so was Odegaard

City home and Away - Home game we suffered without Partey and just couldn’t impose ourselves in the second half, and Away it was just a shit show all over the pitch….Partey, Xhaka, Holding, White, Jesus…all sub par.

Mac76
12-05-2023, 02:31 PM
@hcz i don't have time to go back through every game but am sure there are plenty more examples, here's just two recent ones:

Liverpool away - Tierney would have been a better choice to counter them down our left - Zinchenko was comprehensivly done for the second Liverpool goal

Newcastle away - Tierney coming on was the best thing that could have happened (which is why we should have known it was forced rather than tactical), he gave a us much more stability and i'd argue greatly helped prevent yet another 2-0 becoming 2-2

if i had time i am 100% sure i could come up with several mroe examples of this kind - which is easy to say but i really mean it

Again I’m not questioning whether Zinchenko’s poor performances contributed to those results they clearly did. I am just not as confident to say that playing him was the only reason we lost those games and we wouldn’t have lost them had he not played.

Liverpool away for example, he was dreadful of course and he was being targeted on that right hand side. And I clearly stated before the game my preference to play Tierney instead of him. But what also felt clear to me is that Liverpool for all our poor play and their ability to build a head of steam had somewhat petered out against us from the 70 minute mark and I think we gave them the momentum back again by taking off Odegaard and putting on Kiwior. Not that Odegaard was playing well or that Kiwior is a bad player but we lost any bit of control we had in midfield. And I think the pressure that was invited on us would have told whether Zinchenko or Tierney played. In fact Tierney was badly skinned in the few minutes he got in that game.

And the same collapse happened against West Ham when Zinchenko didn’t even play

I think even when we win comfortably Zinchenko makes me nervous so really the only argument I’d make is that the stats aren’t all that revealing. I agree with you that it’s not good that he’s one of Arteta’s favourites….I arguably think if we played him at home and Tierney away from home we’d probably do a lot better…as Zinchenko does well in games where the other team sits deep and gives us possession.

It was never my understanding that he was supposed to be first choice, more a utility player and to that end I had less problem with us signing him although I felt the priority should have been central midfield.

If he was just another player that was sometimes in the team and sometimes not, I wouldn't get so exercised about it, but his first-on-the-team-sheet status, plus undeserved gushing from many fans who are way too easily impressed by seeing someone run around a lot, really annoys me

I might have misjudged Saka. Literally. Used the wrong criteria to judge him.

Greame Le Saux opened my eyes by saying he's been arsenal best player again, not necessarily due to his performance but the smile on his face he plays with, despite having to go through so much at such a young age.

All this time I was judging him as a footballer, not a TV talent show contestant.

My bad.

Gosh a club based in an area with a large Muslim community, with large support from Black and Asians both here and abroad expresses a high volume of Antisemitism.

Knock me down with a feather

Next you’ll be telling me that these same fans become extremely homophobic whenever the club for corporate reasons brings out the Rainbow adverts.

It’s almost as if racism and bigotry isn’t about white colonialism and it’s actually a result of human beings being primitive and tribal. And trying to police it, is like trying to fish diarrhoea out of a toilet bowl with a sieve

Oh my you’re actually serious?

If you were being more slippery slope you’d be a steep vertical drop

Ultras exist all throughout football and they use imagery to invoke a sense of fear.

They are hardly the newest chapter of Storm front or Combat 18 are they?

The nearest thing we have to extremist supporters was when Bin Laden used to rock up to Highbury in his early twenties (which is actually quite ballsy…considering a lot of our supporters then probably would have wanted to bash someone for having brown skin…different times alas)

I think I made this point before that many lefties tend to look for fascism in the wrong place. On the surface you still have the far right groups of course - The EDL, Britain First but they really do have a diminished impact on our national conversation relative to the other more latent threat.

so a young Asian woman who turns a corner to be suddenly confronted by a bunch of young men, some of whom cover their faces, and waving menacing flags, can feel perfectly safe and comfortable?

Again as I say slippery slope argument

Plus how comfortable would a white woman feel with a bunch of Asian thugs not showing their faces and waving flags and making menacing slogans

What factually has been more likely to occur?

Going back to Anti Semitism, when Jews get attacked physically or verbally it’s more often than not the assailant is Muslim who will justify their behaviour with some half baked statement over Palestinian rights.

In cities in this country, it’s black and Asian men women of whatever colour tend to fear

We’ve created this ghettoisation effect in the name of diversity and multiculturalism rather than make the effort to integrate

In a proportional sense that kind of thing concerns me far more than a couple of skin heads who will have their back sides handed to them when they come up against any proper football gangs

Check this out - apparently this is at London Colney yesterday morning - Arteta totally blanks Trossard when shaking hands with everyone else at the training ground

perhaps Trossard had the temerity to ask why he isn't one of the Chosen Ones

If he'd done the same to another manager at the beginning of a game, it would have been a major incident - it's not an accident, it's really blatant and it's really unprofessional to behave like that

to me it speaks volumes about the kind of person Arteta is, i.e. a total control freak - I'd already said elsewhere that i bet Trossard is regretting coming to a club where he thought he'd have a fair chance of getting game time, only to find that Arteta has one starting 11 and you're either you're in or you're out

We're not Man Utd, we can't afford a manager who is endlessly freezing out talented players for no reason, but it's exactly what he's doing

HCZ_Reborn
18-05-2023, 07:22 AM
Arsenal have played 18 league games since Trossard joined us, and he’s played some part in all of them…so not exactly being “frozen out”. It would have been nice to see him start more games for sure and get more game time. But frozen out? That’s what happened to Ozil (and in his case that was deserved)

Arteta has all the social charm of Raymond Babbit, so whilst I accept he does fall out with players I wouldn’t want to draw that conclusion based on a ten second clip.

Martinelli is out for the rest of the season, If Trossard doesn’t start against Forest then yeah there might be something to it. Unless….nah

Mac76
18-05-2023, 07:31 AM
If the ten-second clip was of Arteta shooting Trossard in the head, you'd be tallking differently, the length of the clip is irrelevant

I strongly suspect Trossard thought he should start against Brighton, he knows their players and who'd be more up for it than him?

Maybe he's made too much of it and annoyed Arteta,, but not to keep up at least a pretence of normal working relationships is poor on Arteta's part

HCZ_Reborn

If the ten-second clip was of Arteta shooting Trossard in the head, you'd be tallking differently, the length of the clip is irrelevant

That would be a clip of someone murdering someone so yes I agree completely different.

It’s pretty clear that the test of whether there’s something in it, is the team sheet at 16:30 on Saturday afternoon

If Trossard starts, best to ignore the clip unless more subsequently appear

If Trossard doesn’t start, then you can conclude there might be an issue

HCZ_Reborn
18-05-2023, 07:39 AM
Plus and this warrants mentioning, you still think that a couple of idiots dressing up in black is the heralding of a Nazi renaissance so best to treat your analytical acumen with skepticism

As I say I’ll let the team sheet do the talking. It’s not that I’m saying you’re definitely wrong because Arteta has history of falling out with players but to this end a) Trossard hasn’t been frozen out of the team and b) the length of the clip is relevant because a longer clip might show you who else he didn’t shake hands with and greet.

Trossard was apparently being a pain in the arse when still with Brighton, and so might be getting a bit too opinionated for Arteta’s liking and I agree with Auba that this is clearly not someone who can handle strong minded/willful players….given I think Arteta is on the neurodiverse spectrum.

But I have no diagnostic credentials to make anything more than an educated guess about such things

The length of the clip isn't completely irrelevant. The point is, it's a clip. I've seen this sort of thing where clips have been edited leaving out the wider context to paint a narrative which doesn't reflect what actually happened.
I think you're reading way too much into this. I'm not saying Arteta doesn't have flaws but so do all managers. But for all that he's got us being the only team to try and challenge a City side who like they're cruising to the treble.
Apart from them we've been miles above everyone else, so he's doing something right. Whether he can push us on remains to be seen but he's absolutely earned the right to try.

Arteta definitely doesn't like strong personalities though. I think that's clear.

I also think there's a link there to arsenal's successive collapses at crucial points of the last two seasons.

Arteta clearly prefers subservience in his players but those types of people don't tend to resist pressure particularly well.

He's greeting EVERY player, raises his hand and is about to greet Trossard then realises who it is, withdraws his hand and walks off

It coudn't be more blatant

As I said above, maybe Trossard's alleged personality issues are rising to the fore, maybe he gives Arteta a "don't effing say hello to me" look, but a manager needa to keep a lid on it and deal with it, as HCZ maybe Trossard will start on Sunday - if he does maybe it will be because Arteta is trying to pacify him (though that would be out of character) but something's not right and with Arteya's poor track record on man-management it's worrying at least

Spotting that Zinchenko was useless doesn’t make you Colombo, it makes you someone with eyes who has enough passing understanding of football to understand what a left back does and how Zinchenko doesn’t meet those criteria. I’ve been saying that all season, it’s no more of a boast than saying “I recognised my bladder was full and went for a piss”
