There doesn't seem to be a dedicated thread for The Championship, or division one, as it should still be called.

Anyway:

West Ham start life in the Championship with a tough home fixture against last season's play-off semi-finalists Cardiff on Saturday, 6 August.

Blackpool will travel to Hull, while Birmingham, the third club to be relegated from the Premier League, start their campaign at Derby.

Steve McClaren's first game in charge of Nottingham Forest will be a home encounter against Barnsley.

Promoted Brighton begin life in their new stadium against Doncaster.

Southampton, who finished second to Brighton in League One last season, start with a home match against Leeds while play-off winners Peterborough host Crystal Palace on the opening weekend.

Elsewhere, play-off final losers Reading play Millwall, Middlesbrough host Portsmouth, Bristol City take on Ipswich, Burnley face Watford while there will be a midlands derby as Coventry face Sven-Goran Eriksson's Leicester.

West Ham, who now have former Bolton and Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce as their new manager, have away matches against Doncaster and Watford after their Cardiff opener.

They close their campaign with a home game against Hull.

Will no doubt end up at the Tractor boys a couple times again this season, usually in the Bobby Robson (North) stand, with a pie... wonder if they can pull themselves together and make a run for the plays off....actually I predict they wont.

Forest, Leeds and West Ham to go up I think. Hope West Ham are relegated though.

Cardiff to bottle it again. I think Ipswich will reach the play-offs. If they keep their players. Readng should do well, too.

Malky Mackay has been appointed Cardiff City manager after Watford gave him permission to speak to the Welsh club.

The 39-year-old replaces Dave Jones at the Cardiff City Stadium, whose six-year reign was ended on 30 May (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13594051.stm).

Cardiff will pay Watford compensation for former Scotland defender Mackay estimated to be close to £300,000.

Hornets owner Laurence Bassini said: "I'm disappointed to see Malky leave. I do, however, wish him the very best... as he begins work at his new club."

The Bluebirds had an official approach for former Norwich and Celtic defender Mackay rejected by the Hornets on Wednesday.

But after discussions at board level Watford "reluctantly" allowed Mackay to talk to their Championship rivals Cardiff.

Watford must now start the search for a new manager and Bassini said that they would take their time to find the right man.

"We must now move on," Bassini said. "There can be no more important a task at a football club than a managerial appointment.

"The current Board - Graham Taylor, Stuart Timperley and David Fransen - will add vital experience to the process which lies ahead of us now.

"Whether we reach a decision quickly or whether it takes a short while, I'm aware the onus is upon us to get it right for Watford."

Former Newcastle manager Alan Shearer revealed on Wednesday that he had held "unsuccessful" talks with the south Wales club.

Another ex-Newcastle manager, Chris Hughton, ex-West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo, St Johnstone's Derek McInnes and ex-Barnsley boss Mark Robins had all been linked with the vacant Cardiff job.

Chief executive Gethin Jenkins and director Alan Whiteley led Cardiff's search, while chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee arrived from Malaysia to complete the deal for Jones' replacement.

Watford chairman Graham Taylor had previously admitted that "Malky is linked with virtually every job that comes up" and the Hornets were well aware their manager was in the sights of other clubs.

Mackay replaced Brendan Rodgers (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/watford/8098749.stm) at Vicarage Road in June 2009 after the current Swansea manager departed to Reading.

In his first managerial job Mackay earned a reputation for producing, on a modest budget, a side playing competitive and attractive football.

He guided the Hornets to 14th in last season's Championship.

With less than two months to go until the start of the new Championship season, Cardiff recognised the need to appoint a new manager as quickly as possible and moved for the man they want, much to Watford's chagrin.

Cardiff's new manager faces a hefty rebuilding process at the club, with 12 players having left (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13503957.stm), including last season's top scorer Jay Bothroyd and fellow striker Michael Chopra.

Chris Hughton has been confirmed as Birmingham City manager after completing a deal to fill the vacant post at St Andrew's.

The former Newcastle manager had been out of football since he was sacked by Newcastle in December.

He won promotion to the Premier League with the Magpies and Blues owner Carson Yeung expects him to repeat the task.

Hughton told the club's website: "It is what I regard as a real football club with extremely passionate supporters."

He added: "I am absolutely delighted.

"To be joining a club of the stature of Birmingham, with the history it has, is a pleasure.
"We are going into an extremely competitive Championship and with the players set to return for pre-season training very soon I need to get into the job straight away."

A club statement said: "Following productive talks acting chairman Peter Pannu felt that Hughton was the perfect candidate to take charge.

"Pannu was particularly impressed by Hughton's vision and footballing theories of garnering youth and playing attractive and effective football."

The club have not confirmed the length of Hughton's contract or the make-up of his backroom staff.

Hughton is Yeung's first managerial appointment since taking control of Blues during the early part of the 2009-10 campaign.

McLeish resigned on 12 June before switching across Birmingham to replace Gerard Houllier at Aston Villa.

Hughton has previously been an assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland and Tottenham.

FOOTIE star Dan Seaborne is fighting for his life in hospital after being battered in a vicious assault outside a nightclub.

The Southampton FC defender, 24, was found lying outside the club in a pool of blood with serious head injuries.

Paramedics treated the player at the scene before he was taken to Southampton General Hospital with life threatening injuries.

His family are keeping vigil at his bedside while vital tests and scans are being carried out.

The attack happened outside Junk nightclub, in Southampton, Hants, where it is thought he had been drinking with pals.

Trouble brewed outside the venue after an incident inside which it is thought led to police being called to the scene at around 2.51am this morning.

Detectives are now investigating the attack and have arrested two men in connection with the assault and are urging witnesses to come forward.

Yesterday morning Seaborne took part in an open training session at St Mary's stadium with his team-mates in front of fans.

He has been at Saints since January 2010, when he signed a three and a half year contract for a fee in the region of £250,000 from Exeter.

He wears the number 25 shirt and made his debut against Millwall in League One on January 16 last year.

He helped Saints gain promotion from League One to the Championship in his first season and has started 35 games for the club.

The 6ft 3in tall player had been tipped for the top due to his height and ability to adapt from centre back to left back.

He captained Exeter to promotion from the Conference two years ago.

Ipswich manager Paul Jewell criticised female assistant referee Amy Fearn after the 2-1 defeat at Birmingham.

Jewell was furious Ipswich were not awarded a penalty for Steven Caldwell's challenge on Lee Martin.

Responding to the comment "I think everyone, to a man, thought it was a penalty", Jewell replied: "To every man, but not a woman.

"Although the referee didn't have a good view, the lineswoman, or whatever she's called, had a great view."

Jewell has faced mounting speculation over his future and defeat at St Andrew's was Ipswich's 10th in 13 matches.

He added: "It's a stonewall penalty and it's a sending-off but he [referee Robert Lewis] didn't give it. You better ask him why he didn't give it, or her why she [Fearn] didn't give it."

Fearn, who was born Amy Rayner, was the subject of criticism from Luton manager Mike Newell in 2006 which saw him fined £6,500 by the Football Association.

Newell made a public apology to Fearn after saying, "this is not park football, so what are women doing here?" following a 3-2 defeat by QPR.

It's how it used to be. When Bob Wilson went off injured in an FA Cup Semi-Final against Stoke in the 1970s, there was only one sub allowed. John Radford, our centre forward, went in goal for the rest of the match and pulled off a decent save, having scored at the other end earlier in the match.

It's generally better to stay in the Championship then it is to go up to the Premier League and then relegated again. I guess it's because you get a load of journeyman players flock to the club when you get promoted and leave again when they go back down.

Charlton are only going to be back in the Championship next season, for instance.

Statistically speaking, yes. On the off-chance you turn your home ground into a fortress (like Stoke, and now, Swansea) have done, you're laughing though.

I can imagine West Ham staying up purely because Upton Park is usually a difficult place to go to. Cardiff too - if they ever actually get through the play-offs. Then again, Birmingham got relegated last year..
