So the 2022WC won't be held in January or February out of respect for the Winter Olympics, which essentially just leaves November and December.
There still shouldn't be too much disruption to the general calendar, tbf.

Quite a bit of damage to the stand.
It seems Brazil were generally behind schedule anyway, is there a serious risk they simply won't be ready? What happens then..? BBC says there is a deadline of December [I don't know if that's for that stadium or everything], judging by one of the pics that looks waaaaay off, even before the accident.

Didn't know Leverkusen were doing so well. Gotta fancy them tonight versus a man Utd side missing Carrick, vidic and Van Persie. A draw would be great for Man Utd and should make them likely for top spot. A loss would mean they'd go at least second in the group before their home banker in the last game. They'll have to go in for every 50/50. Little bit Bender doing the damage? I don't know about that.

The stadiums all have to be completed and ready to go by December apparently.
I remember reading that Germany and England were on standby for 2010 if South Africa ballsed it up, I guess they'll have a contingency plan again if worst comes to worst.
There's no way it'll be moved. There's too much money changing hands.

Uefa president Michel Platini has called for yellow cards to be replaced by a sin-bin.
"I would make it like rugby, punishing the offender with 10 or 15 minutes out of the game," he said in an interview with Spanish sports daily newspaper AS.
"It is an idea. Now it needs to mature and see if it really is good for the game. It is a proposal to be explored.
What does everyone think of that?

Why?
In rugby they don't need armour-plating around the sin-bin, they would in football.
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
05-12-2013, 02:22 PM
@letters
Suppose someone gets a yellow card and has to go to the sin bin, then two minutes later, another player gets a yellow card on the same team. The team go down to 9 men. How is that fair? Then player C gets a yellow card a few minutes later too, the team go down to 8 men. You'll end up conceding 4 goals in the space of 10-15 minutes.
The card system is perfectly fine in football. They should stop finding ways to over complicate the simple things and find ways to simplify the complicated things, such as the offside rule, for instance.
Letters
05-12-2013, 05:09 PM
Fair enough.
IMO they should work more on retrospective punishments or rescinding of wrongly awarded cards.
The whole attitude is "the referee is never wrong" which is obviously balls.
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
05-12-2013, 10:33 PM
Also think about keepers, what happens to them? Will there be one rule for keepers and another for outfield players? It all gets messy.
If it was to replace the red card then I think it would be a better idea.
I think the best thing would be to get competent referees.

:gp:
why is this never brought up? its always lets change the rules not lets get good referees in.
sin binning is a stupid idea as SWAYR says, could lead to a team down to a stupid number of players and makes the games crap. however, what should happen is like letters say, any decision can be reviewed after the game. if a yellow was wrong it can be removed or upgraded to a red and they are banned for next game etc

I think the idea letters is getting at is that if players were to be 'sin binned' then they might stop doin stupid things during a game that would lead to that punishment.
If they want to keep flying into reckless challenges or other such shit and go down to 9 men then that's tough fucking luck!
All we need is a transparent system that judges refereeing performances. I don't think refereeing is bad because of bias but it's clear that home advantage helps and they're a bit tentative on making big calls e.g. an early sending off. If the FA were to rate refereeing performances out of 10 for every game using whatever criteria they want to come up with, and if that list is made public, then everyone will know...over time...that who the best referees are and the worst ones get removed from more important games. If it gathers a lot of publicity, maybe the crowd will be less annoyed at refs that have been proven to be very good.
The FA are far too protective of their referees, which goes back to the days when they were volunteers.
It's a professional position now, and they should be treated as such.
We've had some awful refs this year (not necessarily Arsenal specific). But there have also been a couple of good ones.
That young(ish) lad Michael Oliver is one of the best I've seen in a long while.
Lee Mason is comfortably the worst, but is given a good run for his money by the old boys; Dowd, Twattenberg, Foy and Fucking Mike Deane.

Football fixing claims: Alan Shearer calls for zero tolerance
Former England international Alan Shearer says there needs to be a zero tolerance policy to anyone found guilty of fixing in football matches.
Six people were arrested on Sunday over fixing allegations in the sport and have been bailed until April.
Shearer, known for his superior insight, and intelligent analysis said:
"You are never going to stop betting but you have to stop the people inside," Shearer told BBC Radio 5 live, in a statement of astounding intellect.
"It just cannot happen. If anyone is found guilty then there should be zero tolerance. And by zero, I mean none."

Anthony Taylor for our 3-1 loss to villa
Phil Dowd for the 4-4 at newcastle (there was actually a story afterwards that he was investigated for match fixing)
Mike Reily for that loss at old trafford in 2004.

Alan Shearer not likely to return to football management
Former England captain Alan Shearer has said his short spell in charge of Newcastle in 2009 is likely to remain his only stint in football management.
Shearer quit playing in 2006 as Newcastle's record goalscorer before becoming a Match of the Day pundit.
“I've been out of football for over four years and I'm not looking to get back into it. Even I have no clue what's going on anymore, as you can probably tell” joked the former Geordie favourite
"I love my job and know I'm lucky to have it. And by lucky, I mean fortunate. Could I see myself returning to management? Probably not, but maybe one day" he told BBC Newcastle.

Never thought I'd say it, but anything other than a Ronaldo win would have been a travesty. For those following him, Ronaldo has matured hugely, and his behavior off the pitch has changed massively - in terms of encouraging other players. This, together with the sheer difference he has made individually to his team's results makes him a worthy winner. IMHO.

A very good article and sums up why Ronaldo shouldn't have won and in great detail. I knew he'd win even though Ribery did the treble but that's how it goes. The voting system may need to be changed or the awards split by writers and votes because some of the voting is political.

Voting system does need to be changed, but every possible way to vote is open to being biased.
You could perhaps have a set system, eg x amount of points for a goal in the CL/League/Internationals , and points for trophies , but I'm not sure how they'd implement that really.

Great article until it got a bit whiny and personal in the last few paragraphs.
I dont watch those tin-pot La Liga games in which he scored 60 whatever goals. It not as if hes playing for Tottenham or something. If he was that great this year he would have won something. End of.

The voting does not need changing. All that matters is what happens on the pitch. This is a pointless award and the mechanism is right up there in futility along with artistic impression judging in figure skating and synchronised swimming.
Aside from the players themselves who stand to make a few quid, I'm not sure many football fans give the slightest fuck about who wins it.
Even when Henry was in the running, you would have had to pay me to watch the results.

He hasn't. He waited for Villa to play us before recommending him.
I need a portable Mindless Optimism thread.
Ronaldo's a great player, he's proved it, even when in the PL he scored an absolute hatful including 42 in one season.
The guy has got it all, skill, pace, a great shot (he scored an absolute belter in the CL against us I remember), he's strong and can head.
He deserves to have won it he's proven himself over many years, there's people out there that hate him and will always look for things to discredit his achievements of course there always will be, but he's a great player and one of the best for sure.
As for his performance against Sweden, Sweden are always a tough side to beat (ask England) and Ibrahimovic has been brilliant these last few years, Ronaldo produced it when it matters for Portugal.
Aside from the players themselves who stand to make a few quid, I'm not sure many football fans give the slightest fuck about who wins it.
Even when Henry was in the running, you would have had to pay me to watch the results.

I'd have loved it if Henry had won it, I think he should, it's great to have the player recognised as the best player in your team.

I don't have vendettas (though I admit I don't like certain players personnalities), I simple don't rate the players you refer to, none of them are proven top stars like Ronaldo so their ability can be questioned.
I agree with this, he's been doing it for years (including the PL so people questioning his achievements with Real only need to look back at what he did in England), as has Messi. When players deliver with such regularity it's hard to argue they are that good.
Few players strike the ball as well as he does, will never forget that free kick against us, it was miles out and he just belted it in with such pace it was unstoppable.

My point is whenever <insert player you don't rate here> has a good game you either ignore the fact or downplay it.
You seem very quick to form opinions on players (and on other things) and once you've done so you'll do anything to avoid changing that opinion or considering you may have been wrong. I don't know if it's stubbornness or just WUMing.

France will be involved in qualifying for Euro 2016 but matches against them will be friendlies.
Maybe it's for the purpose of ranking points, France thought it was unfair because they were in a smaller group and thus had less ranking points available to them (thus it was much harder for them to be seeded in the top pot for the World Cup).

The bleacher report is compelling an interesting but there are certain things in it I can't quite get my head around, though I am unsure myself he deserved to win it. The pie chart itself (much of which the debate comes to a climax at) shows 62% of his goals was either giving his team the lead or extending a 1 goal lead to make more sure of the result/win. Putting his team out if sight even, considering Real's dominance over most.
I don't really see how the pie chart stats can work too much against him. The writer says Cronaldo opened the scoring 8 times last season (not sure if that is correct or not) and assuming it is correct, it is slightly redundant as last season effectively spans 2012 into 2013 rather than the duration of 2013 exclusively.
I would agree though that a number of factors worked in his favour in winning it; namely the result against Sweden and Messi's timely absence.
Could also have something to do with cash.
Don't think it has anything to do with Johnny Cash tbh.

That is uber retarded, all their good players are only there because of Laudrup, they advanced in europe league, etc. what else can a new premier league team expect from their manager? They dont even do it like most other mid-bottom level teams do, by just parking the bus all day, they actually play exciting football worth watching. He did better than both Rodgers and Martinez, who are succesful with bigger clubs now. Clubs were the chairman wants to much power, never goes anywhere, i hope Swansea fans will do something about it, before it goes to far as it did with a team im supporting here in Denmark, they almost went bankrupt before the fans protested enough to get him kicked to hell. I just see the same pattern with Swansea sadly.
Anyway, hope they relegate now. We should go get Michu for cheap in the summer.

Swansea have seriously regressed this season. Not just in terms of results, but their overall quality of player and subsequently their style of play too. Laudrup's signings have either been ill-fitting and detrimental to their philosophy or just more punts in La Liga's bargain bins in the hope of unearthing another Michu. It all seemed strange since the start of the season and they've barely played one match like the Swansea they're supposed to be. I think Laudrup got bored or maybe he wanted more investment to take them up a level, but either way he didn't seem to be the enthusiastic guy who shone last season. The timing is off, but it's probably more effective for the owner to get someone in to fight off relegation than keep an uninterested manager.
