Up to a point, yes although it depends on how much of the, err, sport the BBC show as opposed to endless interviews with athletes talking about how they 'ran their own race' etc...

Interesting, the opening ceremony isn't in the stadium, it's along the Seine. Could be good. Or a fiasco, but using the skyline of Paris as a backdrop could be a good move.

The latter

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/29430463/charlotte-dujardin-whipping-horse-video-paris-2024/

That's it, is it? Something she did 4 years ago. I dunno, seems a bit of an overreaction to me

I think the issue with the video is that it’s not something that looks like a one off, it looks like routine treatment. Horses are pretty hardy so I doubt it would have caused it more than slight discomfort but it’s definitely reacting in a fearful way and I’m not really big on animal abuse. I think if you’re training an Animal through fear rather than establishing trust you’re a bit of a cunt.
If her contrition is sincere I don’t think this should end her career necessarily, but I think the problem is if she’d taken part in the Olympics the controversy over the video overshadows everything. Best to let some water run under a few bridges.

Mac76
24-07-2024, 09:23 AM
It's pretty damning - Dujardin doesn't look angry or like she's lost control

Instead, as HCZ says, she's whipping it in a very routine way that suggests it's something she does all the time

Her contrition won't be sincere, except in terms of her regretting for her own sake that she misses the Olympics

The video says what she really thinks about the horses she claims to love so much

I expect that gold postbox to be removed in short order, either by the post office or people taking things into their own hands

Letters

I mean, it's not great. But isn't this what they do to train horses?
You can think it's a bad thing, and I'd pretty much agree, but I suspect it's fairly common.

I thought the whole mockery of the last supper was utterly cringe, in the fact that it’s perfectly safe to make fun of Christian religious culture and iconography (as it should be).

You’ll get people complain about it because “oh they wouldn’t do it with Islam” too right they wouldn’t. Believe me I’d love it if they did, because if any religion deserves to be mocked it’s Islam.

But unfortunately a lot of Trad Christians are saying if the Muslims don’t tolerate this why should we?. You want to go around sending death threats, issuing fatwas and murdering people for offending you?. I don’t think you do somehow, Christianity largely abandoned that shit in the Middle Ages. It would also make you despicable hypocrites.

Good career though

Hmmm dunno he was much closer in ability to the top three than he was the rest of the pack

He was world no1 at the end of 2016, and probably (although never would have come close to those three with grand slams) would have picked up a lot more of them if not for the hip injury that he never really recovered from

Don’t get me wrong the top three are freaks of nature and he wasn’t quite at that level I agree but not perhaps as far off as you’re stating given the amount of grand slam finals he was consistently making, the ATP titles he won and not to mention back to back gold medals at the Olympics

I actually don’t think it’s unlikely that Murray has been in a Tennis match and thought something like “I'm glad I'm serving for the match because i need to go to the locker rooms and drop the kids off at the pool”. You get the old comfort break to take another meeting with Armitage Shanks, and even though most of the fluid you take on is sweated out of your body if you’re in a five hour five setter there’s got to be a moment where you’re desperate for a slash at the very least

I think Redgrave (Steve, not Vanessa) is worth a shout. 5 Olympics in a row, although I guess it being in a team dilutes that somewhat.

No we aren't silly. They have about 1 million medals compared to our 10. Probably because they have 300 million people and 20 million deadbeats too. We only have 60 million humans and a few million other things. No competition. We're doing okay. The men's 8 rowing was great.

No you come on here once a month, cry for the moon about how the standard of football was better at some arbitrary time in the past. Then make your obligatory comments about how we waste our time on here discussing minutiae and irrelevant matters.

Forgetting of course that that’s the point of this place.

If you’re doing something far more important with your life that it only affords you once a month on here that’s actually probably a good thing…especially given the levels of bitterness and resentment that is constant in your messages.

This place is a distraction for me nothing more, it’s easy for me to access with a smart phone and it actually doesn’t take up that much of my time…even a large post takes no more than ten minutes out of my day.

Maybe focus more on the things that give you genuine enjoyment in life, because clearly coming here even as seldom as you do gives you none. It’s clear that there are things you do take pleasure from, you were talking for example about how you and your daughter were bonding over what she was learning about music.

Managed to get a look at the men’s gold medal event for the Tennis, players seperated by a second serve by Alcaraz that got swatted away and a rather tame lob in the tie break. Although he is the current Roland Garros champion, I think because of his pace and power….clay is probably not his strongest surface. Although Djokovic looks like he really wants this…fair play won everything else in his career

Go to Google live score and the dot next to the player will tell you who is serving so can tell whether it’s a break of serve or not. Anyway someone asked me this in the pub and I didn’t know, is this best of three or best of five. Gold medal match is usually best of five but it wasn’t in Tokyo three years ago

See I’ve never thought the word Lies is accurate with Trump. Whilst of course there’s no doubt that he does tell knowing porkies….a lot of the time he simply has no idea what the truth is and has no interest in finding out.

His niece said of him that he’s the kind of person who will gaslight himself and convince himself something which is false is actually the truth (especially if that falsehood is beneficial to him)

Yes, that's fair. You're right - lying implies he knows the truth and is deliberately misrepresenting it.
It's more likely he just hasn't bothered to find out - he's read the "she's trans" narrative, it feeds into his particular biases so he's parroting it without bother to checking if it's true, because he doesn't care if it is.

I have to say, despite some people looking down on it…I think Skateboarding is a totally legitimate Olympic event.

I struggle a bit with sports where someone has to say how nicely you did it.
You know where you are with 100m, the person who crosses the line first wins. With things like skateboarding, it is more subjective.
That said, I know there are rules about this which make it more objective - with diving I know the amount of splash is a factor, for example.
I draw the line at rhythmic gymnastics which is basically just dancing. Yes, it's very clever and skilful, but that doesn't make it a sport.

I mean, juggling is difficult (and I'm very good at it by the way, it's what I did at university instead of making friends or talking to women), but that doesn't make it a sport.

I’m just saying that you have at your own admission stated you have issues with sports that are judged and therefore open to subjectivity. I suppose every sport is to a degree even with football you can legislate as much as you want, and it will still come down to individual interpretation at times

There's obviously a sliding scale. It's like board games. Most are a combination of luck and skill. At one end of that you have chess which is entirely skill and strategy, at the other you have snakes and ladders which is entirely dumb luck.

With sport it's debatable where the line is. The sports which are in the Olympics has always been a bit of a arbitrary and entertaining mix. Breakdancing, sorry "breaking"...nah, that's not a sport. It may be skilful and entertaining but so are lots of things. Skateboarding...I think it's a bit silly but I watched Brown's run and I enjoyed it. More of a pastime/hobby than a sport I'd say.

tbh I quite like ice dance - I guess I'm the Torvill and Deam generation. But it's basically Strictly Come Dancing on ice,

Had a couple of days off so ended up tuning in to some random events.

Really enjoyed watching the speed wall climbing thing yesterday. 5 seconds per.... Race? Mental.

Found myself even enjoying watching showjumping! Fucking horses jumping over fences. And it was tense af.

I also watched the surfing in the morning. Realised I'd been sitting there watching 2 people paddle in the water for 20 minutes because there were no waves. Literally 20 minutes.

Watched the kayak cross I think it is on Monday. Entertaining for the first race or two, they even do a rotation and go underwater. Then realised it was basically pot luck if you get stuck behind someone else. And if you do, you're basically fucked.

Seems to be quite a few events where GB are "close to" gold or silver, and getting silver or bronze, or missing out completely. Though frankly I've no idea if they're events we should be getting medals in, or whether we're just getting greedy now we're actually half decent.

Well ok first off I’m talking about your view of football in general in that the standard has dropped exponentially from this arbitrary time in the past. Henry and Bergkamp were extraordinary even when they were playing, they weren’t of a standard that was easily replicated. Pires ? Well I don’t think Odegaard, Saka are far off that standard at all but please thrill me with your acumen as to how wrong you KNOW I am.

I think football is no better or worse, it just changes…..we are certainly better off now as spectators than ten-fifteen years ago when there were more teams emulating either the Mourinho or Atletico Madrid style or just the kind of non football displayed by Bolton, Stoke etc

I do think that too many teams play the low block, but it’s nothing new. A year after we won the double in 2002…we had teams sticking 11 men behind the ball both in the champions league and the premier league. The fact is the brilliant, one touch pass and move football that you’re eulogising even back then became pretty turgid when it was denied space to operate in, in the final third.

The fact is the brilliant, one touch pass and move football that you’re eulogising even back then became pretty turgid when it was denied space to operate in, in the final third.

Well thanks for proving an actual answer. It really does move things along so much better.

Here's my conspiracy theory. I think football used to be mostly about sport and partly about money (as a necessity) and is now entirely about the money and with nothing to do with sport. And if you view things that way then absolutely everything makes perfect sense. Try it.

Saka vs Pires? Seriously?

No it’s always been about money in modern times, certainly since the advent of the premier league….the human rights abusing owners of clubs has just codified it even more so. To be honest if you’re talking about football at a time where it was just about sport, I’m only 40….so you’d be going back before my time

Plus I can pretty much guarantee that I’ve given you the exact answer as in my previous post before now.

Rubbish. The kid who grew up in a town and worked his way uo to play for that town in the football league, that wasn't fake and that wasn't about the money - seeing as they got paid enough to afford chips down the pub we all used to drink in. If you don’t think at the very least top flight football has been money centric since the premier league began I don’t know what to tell you.

Are you just inventing arguments to be opposed to. Of course the Premier league was about money from the outset that’s the point I’m making…I didn’t think it needed to be said.

I was 8 when Division one became the Premier League, and when you look at how the Liverpool “red machine” went about winning titles even pre Premier league the pathway was set for what was to come even before then

I was born in the season 1983/1984 which was the first season corporate sponsorship came onto football shirts so what I’m telling you is I have no living memory of football not being about money. I don’t know how clearer I can make that

Well, back to the topic, obviously fuck the French faggots for trying to destroy the Olympics in every way possible - gay, fucking woke, depraved, commie cunts, you're welcome - but the athletes. Amazing. Incredible people. Apart from the tranny cheats. I haven't had any experience with what it takes to perform at this level, but I have had some experience at what it takes to get to a professional level. Not me, of course, I like me chips too much. But the people I have experienced that push themselves to win at the top level. What I find with these people is they not only excel at sport but they also excel in other areas. They work from 5am to late and every minute of their life is on schedule. Is it a good way to live? I'm not sure and I wouldn't be capable. But it works for them. So when you seen an Olympian coming in 8th, just remember, that's a fucking remarkable human being right there. Driven. And when they step up for the gold - well, we just don't understand that level of commitment. e're all capable of it, but only a few have the discipline and the drive. Makes you wonder what the world would be like of we were all Olympic standard instead of socialist fags.

You’ll find that it’s likely the same story with a lot of other countries. What you get out is what you put in, it’s not the same instant gratification as City but you’re paying for the facilities and coaching and time for young people to develop in certain sports. I saw someone say something similar on FB. If it needs a DJ then it probably isn't a sport.
Same conversation we had the other day. I like things like diving actually and I can appreciate the skill. But any sport which needs judges to say how nicely you did it...
Apparently squash is having a go in 2028. I have mixed feelings about that. It's the only sport I've ever been good at - dad played and taught me, I played a lot in my teens and 20s.
But it's not that good a spectator sport. I think the ball is just a bit too small for TV and moves too fast, it's hard to follow.

It is and it comes round to excluding boxing if you are determining that subjective judgement excludes the sport

For me sport is physical competition and therefore technically break dancing or whatever else can fit into that mould.

It’s I guess always going to be a balance between not being too exclusive and letting silly stuff count as Olympic event

In some ways I’m inclined to be more for stuff like skateboarding, climbing etc than I am football, tennis and golf being involved. Mainly because they are sports that stand up in their own rights. Let Athletes and other events have their day for the fortnight.

At least in climbing there's objective measures of who won - with speed climbing it's a race, there's the other type our bloke got a gold in where you have to get as high as you can without falling.
Debatable whether it's a sport really but there's a lot of grey areas.

You're right about boxing, to me it's clearly a sport but you're right in that it's judged. Difficult, innit?
I guess if horse dancing and dancing in water (synchro) can be sports then why not human dancing (to which my answer would be none of them should be in!)

I think the Boxing situation with Imane Khelif was a bit unsavoury, and the IOC were to blame for that. Basically stating that it doesn’t accept the legitimacy of sex testing in the sport. When you’re talking about a sport where the difference between male and female physiques can put people in danger, that’s actually a pretty reckless attitude. In a way feel sorry for Khelif, if the IOC ignore the IBA’s results and say this person can box in the female category, why wouldn’t they. This isn’t a trans issue because such concepts are not recognised in Algeria. DSD shouldn’t be used as a political wedge issue by either side, this is a matter that should have been resolved by common sense….not as a culture war issue.

Letters

She has been boxing for years against other females and has always been female as far as she or anyone else knew. I’m sorry but this isn’t about the IBA at all, yes they are absolutely a disreputable organisation. But they don’t do the testing analysis themselves, it’s outsourced to a lab in India. The fact is the IOC made no attempt to clear the matter up because their philosophy is that they don’t recognise sex testing and what someone is, is what it says on their passport. Which is obviously complete bollocks otherwise you wouldn’t have segregated sex categories to begin with. As I say yes absolutely it shouldn’t have been turned into a trans issue. But if someone is biologically male, whether they were aware of it or not they should not be eligible to compete in the female category.

The thing is the level of testosterone in the test was like off the charts, more than than your average bloke would get.

If Khelif wants to submit to testing to prove that the IBA test was faulty or fraudulent it would clear everything up, somehow I’m guessing they won’t.

Again no it isn’t, the IOC could have put the matter to bed months ago but kept the issue going. It does not recognise the validity of sex testing and wouldn’t have banned Khelif or Lin had they proved to be XY. It’s not a fairness issue, it’s beyond that…it’s a safety issue. And saying Khelif has boxed female boxers before and hasn’t done serious harm, is like saying a child has been left with an XL bully unsupervised and it hasn’t had its face mauled off

The IOC needs to revoke this ridiculous idea of you’re a woman if that’s what your passport says.

To be fair, using the sex someone is classified as on their passport has been perfectly acceptable throughout Olympic history. We are now entering an era where that is no longer fit for purpose but
And this whole thing only blew up when that Italian boxer quite after 45 seconds - she subsequently apologised.
Before all that I'd never heard of this boxer or all the kerfuffle around her last year.

I’d heard about it a while before the Olympics started.

Well no the IBA couldn’t have put it to bed, because they would have still been eligible under IOC rules. You accept of course that what made sense in the past can’t apply now, because by bringing the trans thing into it people can legally change their sex even if they can’t biologically do so.

And with boxing especially, a woman fighting someone with male muscle mass and testosterone levels is especially dangerous.
