'It is only natural that I would be considered Arsene Wenger's successor' - Nagoya Grampus coach Dragan Stojkovic
Wenger's skipper during J-League tenure is attracted by the prospect of succeeding his former coach
Nagoya Grampus coach Dragan Stojkovic has admitted that it is "only natural" that he has been nominated by Arsene Wenger as a potential successor to the Arsenal manager.
In an exclusive interview with Goal.com, the former playmaker said he has an excellent relationship with Wenger and is happy to have his name associated with the Premier League club.
Wenger said earlier this year that "there are a hundred reasons" why he "would love" Stojkovic, who was his captain during the Frenchman's reign at Grampus in the mid-1990s, to be his successor.
Stojkovic, 46, who coached Grampus to their first J-League title last season, told Goal.com in the wake of his side's clash with Gamba Osaka on Wednesday: "I am still a very good friend of Arsene Wenger, I see him every year, and it is only natural that my name pops up when it comes to musing about who will be his successor.
"Who wouldn't be happy to be associated with such a big club as Arsenal?
"But I am now very proud to coach in Nagoya and I am working as hard as I can for this club."
As revealed by Goal.com last Saturday, Wenger has privately conceded that 2011-12 will be his final season in charge of the Gunners and attention has begun to turn to his likely successor.
Stojkovic and the Arsenal boss are well acquainted as the former Yugoslavia international was Wenger's kingpin during the Frenchman's reign in charge of Grampus, winning the 1995 Emperor's Cup as well as the respective player and manager of the year awards.
On his possible replacement as Arsenal manager, Wenger told Vecernje Novosti in February: “I would love Stojkovic to be my successor, there are a hundred reasons for that.
"Our ideas are the same and we both strive for perfect football. I knew he was going to have teams playing attacking football with many passes. He has done that, showing he will be a great coach. I told him that if he could transmit his football imagination to his players he would fly high.”
I'm afraid. Hold me.
i think it was earlier this year (last season) when the rumour of Owen Coyle was being thrown round the media

JOSE MOURINHO is likely to escape punishment for sticking a finger in the eye of a Barcelona coach - but could lose his job instead.
The Real Madrid boss was caught by TV cameras making a shameful attack on Tito Vilanova during Wednesday's 3-2 Spanish Super Cup defeat.
Spanish FA chiefs are unlikely to charge the former Chelsea chief because the incident did not appear in referee David Fernandez Borbalan's official report.
But Bernabeu bosses are under increasing pressure to axe Mourinho after this latest scandal, which came during a 20-man bust-up sparked by Marcelo's two-footed lunge on Cesc Fabregas. Three players ended up being sent off.
Barca vice-president Carles Vilarrubi rapped: "Real Madrid cannot stand behind such a reprehensible act as their coach committed at the Camp Nou. Action must be taken.
"Mourinho is a curse on our football in Spain."
The fact Real stars refused to wait for the medal presentation at the end of their 5-4 aggregate defeat also brought criticism.
Barca midfielder Xavi said: "The way Madrid acted was lamentable and pathetic. They kicked us off the pitch and looked to cause fights and eventually Marcelo was sent off for a criminal tackle intended to do damage.
"Pepe was just as bad. Not only do they escape punishment most of the time, they keep on protesting when justice is done by the referee. It is shameful
"And when we lost the Spanish Cup to them in April we were sporting enough to wait for the medal ceremony and put up with them celebrating their win.
"But when they lose they just run down the tunnel."
During the summer there were doubts over whether the Special One would be allowed to stay at the Bernabeu. But his push for power increased following the sacking of sporting director and staunch critic Jorge Valdano.
However Mourinho was left in no doubt that president Florentino Perez expects silverware - and a better image.
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique blasted: "Mourinho is destroying Spanish football.
"They are working under the orders of someone who will ruin our game unless something is done about him.
"This has got completely out of order and their actions are well beyond the limit of what is acceptable.
"It's going too far and one day it will end very badly."

Barca need to look a little closer to home to sort out cheating and breaking the rules. Mourinho will be delighted they are moaning and whining, this was his objective no doubt.

A man of principle.
A man of great fortitude.
A man of hunger (but not gluttony).
The desire to do what is right.
A god fearing man.
Where Arsene no longer knows, a man who instinctively knows the the Arsenal way.
A guy who speaks the language of Gazidis.
A man we can all look up to (especially Letters and Fakeyank).
A man who understands what Kroenke is made of, where he's from and why he has that moustache.
Ladies and gentlemen!
Will you please al rise and remove your baseball caps.
