The new serie a season begins saturday the 26. or at least was supposed to be. Players threaten to strike because of the renewal - or better, lack of it - of their national contract.

This will be the season that will finally certify Italian football's decline. only 3 teams will qualify for the 2012-2013 CL and players like Pastore, Sanchez and Eto'o - who will leave Inter for relatively unknown money-bags Anzhi - have gone on to play elsewhere.

A distinctly average AC Milan side romped to the title last season despite them having ageing players like Nesta, Van Bommel, Seedorf, Gattuso and Ambrosini in their starting 11. Consistency was personified by Zlatan Ibrahimovic the man who has won all the Scudetti that he's taken part in from 2005 onwards. At back Thiago Silva claimed his stake as one of the world best defenders. Milan have strenghtened by signing Mexes and Taiwo at back and the promising El Shaarawy - Italian of Egyptian descent - uo front. In the closing stages of the window they will bring in a midfielder, possibly Aquilani on loan from Liverpool.

Their main rivals will be world champions and neighbours Internazionale. They have had a poor run-in to the season, though. New coach Gasperini has come in for stick for changing his team's back four into a 3-man defence and not taking to Beijing - where Inter lost 2-1 the Italian supercup v Milan - the players involved in the Copa America: Cambiasso, Lucio, Milito and Maicon. Eto'o's departure will be a blow, given that he scored 37 goals last season. Forlan or Tevez might come in but no-one still knows yet.

Other contenders will be Napoli, Juventus and Roma. Napoli have kept their best players and signed some good players to bolster their roster: swiss internationals Inler and Dzemaili in midfield, Fiorentina's Donadel and Santana and Bologna's Britos and Independiente's Fernandez at back.
Juve revolutionised the team once more. After two 7th place in a row, new manager Antonio Conte, former captain of the team in their glory days in the mid-90s - said will play an attack-minded 424. They have 2 new fullbacks in Ziegler and Lichtsteiner. Then signed Italy and Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo on a Bosman and Chilean Arturo Vidal, from Leverkusen. Mirko Vucinic from Roma has come to beef up their attacking options.

Roma have changed manager and style too. From Little Barcelona B has come in Luis Enrique and a host of new players like Bojan, Lamela, Stekelenburg, Jose Angel. But, with Vucinic even Menez - and possibly Borriello - has left. The team has had a nightmare pre-season with players struggling to adapt to his ball-to-feet approach and heavy 3-0 defeats against Valencia and Psg. A 1-0 loss at Slovan in the Europa league has already fuelled speculation that Enrique might be a has-been soon and Roma will call former Lazio and Palermo manager Delio Rossi to their rescue.

Good preview. Haven't really followed Italian football much recently.

it may not be as glamorous as it used to be in its heyday but it's very competitive. Teams play more open than they did 20 years ago, that's for sure.

Yep. Went to see Arsenal v Udinese the other day and the Italians were very impressive. Fast and sharp on the counter-attack. Lacked the finish but tbf, Szczesny was in top form.

Kwado Asamoah looks to be some player btw. Hope to see more Italian sides play more adventurously, like Napoli too. As for AC, they looked distinctly average vs Spurs in the CL. Everything through the middle and little pace anywhere. Maybe they'll change it up with a smaller reliance central playmaking, as Pirlo has gone.

Aquilani very close to AC Milan. Inter closing in on Forlan, Genoa's Kucka and would like to take Zarate on loan from Lazio. Juventus are after a CB - Diego Lugano or Chelsea's Alex - and a LM, Giaccherini from Cesena.

Roma almost sealed Osvaldo deal. Palermo skipper, Cassani, Italy's RB goes to Fiorentina.

Aquilani very close to AC Milan.

How was Aquilani last season?

All we heard was how well he played, and yet no one wanted to buy him.

If he was so good, why do you think no one wanted him?

he managed to stay out of injuries and played wuite well when available. Nobody signed him because he was too expensive.

doesn't surprise me in the least. Inter have not bought the players he required over the summer to play his favourite 3-4-3. Inter players are old and nearing the end of an illustrious career, especially in midfield.

What was served up last night at lowly Novara was Wenger-like crap: no pace, no determination, confusion all around the pitch over who plays where and who is really in charge of the team. At some point cameras showed Cambiasso telling young hopeful defender Ranocchia: 'Let's play 4 at back, do as I tell you'. In the stands, a bewildered Massimo Moratti was caught telling his wife 'we never shoot'.

When the final whistle was blown Moratti said that the manager looked no more in control: by then Gasp was a dead-man walking. Cue, the sack.

Former Roma and Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri odds-on favourite to take the job.

A YOUNG Inter Milan fan received a surprise visit from skipper Javier Zanetti — after his appeals for the club to finally win fell on deaf ears.
The Nerazzurri had gone five games without victory when nine-year-old Filippo went to see his beloved team take on Bologna on Friday night.

Filippo was pictured at the San Siro holding up a banner that read: "Could you win, please?

"Otherwise they make fun of me at school! Thank you, Filippo."

However, Claudio Ranieri's side were promptly thumped 3-0 by their lowly Serie A opponents — their fifth defeat in six games.

The club were alerted to Filippo's plea and president Massimo Moratti personally called the youngster's family.

And the Inter chief arranged for skipper Zanetti to present him with his own personalised shirt.

A delighted Filippo said: "I won't change team, as I remain an Inter fan.

"When we won the treble, I was the one who wound up my friends. Now I can walk around with my head held high."

Chelsea are a team in turmoil. They were disorganised and disjointed in Naples and played like a team wanting rid of their manager.

But the truth is, take Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi out of the Napoli team and they are so average. They are poor defensively, which is unusual for an Italian team of any quality.

Andrea Stramaccioni, the youth team boss, is the coach til the end of the season

He won that Nextgen Pub Team competition recently

Cripps_orig
27-03-2012, 01:07 AM
The inevitable has happened. Again.

On Monday night, Inter president Massimo Moratti fired Claudio Ranieri and hired Primavera coach Andrea Stramaccioni as the temporary first team boss after a nightmare run which had seen the Nerazzurri register only one win in 10 Serie A games.

Sunday night's 2-0 defeat to Juventus at Juventus Stadium came only a matter of hours after Stramaccioni's young guns marched to victory in the inaugural NextGen Series final with a 5-3 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Road in London.

Ranieri was hired only six months ago, and becomes the 17th coach to end a relationship with the club since Moratti took over in 1995.

Below, Goal.com looks at the record of each of Moratti's men...

OTTAVIO BIANCHI (1995)
Though it would take Moratti's club some years to get their hands on a Scudetto, the man at the helm upon his arrival had already done so in his time with Diego Maradona at Napoli. However, Bianchi's relationship with Moratti was to be a short one, with the trainer paying the price for not delivering results despite the arrivals of the likes of Javier Zanetti and Roberto Carlos. Ironically, it was a defeat to Napoli which brought about his sacking.

LUIS SUAREZ (1995)
'Luisito' was asked to take charge at San Siro for a third time as a temporary measure after the sacking of Bianchi. The former playing legend, who was part of 'Il Grande Inter' as they marched to two successive European Cups in the '60s, had first coached the club back in 1974.

ROY HODGSON (1995-97)
The Englishman took on the role of coach in a fifth country after earlier spells in Sweden, England, Norway and Switzerland. There had appeared to be some hope of silverware being secured as Inter reached the final of the Uefa Cup in Moratti's first season of contintental football in 1996-97, but a surprise defeat to Schalke was to be Hodgson's final act.

LUCIANO CASTELLINI (1997)
The former goalkeeping coach achieved a 100 per cent record with two victories in his only games in temporary charge, but Moratti had already made his mind up to look elsewhere for his next coaching appointment.

GIGI SIMONI (1997-98)
Under Simoni, Inter would fall short in controversial fashion in the closely fought 1998 Serie A title race. THAT foul by Mark Iuliano on Ronaldo went unpunished, along with a whole host of other questionable calls, as Juventus won the virtual decider at the Delle Alpi on the way to the league crown. Victory over Lazio in Paris in the Uefa Cup final had at least been some consolation, but by November that year, Simoni was a goner.

MIRCEA LUCESCU (1998-99)
It had been hoped that the charismatic Romanian would be able to go one step further than Simoni, but, by March, Inter were slipping well away from the top spots and had been knocked out of the Champions League by eventual winners Manchester United. A 4-0 defeat at Sampdoria was enough for Moratti to pull the trigger once more.

LUCIANO CASTELLINI (1999)
Castellini returned for what was understood to constitute the remainder of the 1998-99 season, but four games in he was pushed aside once more. A derby defeat hadn't helped his claim for longer-term employment.

ROY HODGSON (1999)
Hodgson became the second coach to work under Moratti twice when he was recalled for the final four league games of the campaign. It turned out to be six when Inter were forced to play off against Bologna for a Uefa Cup spot.

MARCELLO LIPPI (1999-2000)
Under the watchful eye of the eventual World Cup winner, again Inter would fall short of the much sought-after silverware. A Coppa Italia final place was achieved, but Lazio wrapped up the domestic double and also earned the Supercoppa Italiana against a Zanetti-less Nerazzurri.
Marcello Lippi | Outdone by champions Lazio

MARCO TARDELLI (2000-01)
After Moratti decided that he didn't like the football Lippi's side played, in came the 1982 world champion. However, Tardelli would last less than a season, taking Inter to fifth place and the last 16 of the Uefa Cup before it became time for a change once more at Appiano Gentile.

HECTOR CUPER (2001-03)
Cuper became the longest-serving coach to date under Moratti, enjoying 28 months at the helm. The secret to his relative success was the ability to push Inter on that extra step, attaining second and third-placed finishes in his two full seasons in charge. However, his reign will always be remembered for the final-day failure at Lazio in 2002, when the Nerazzurri lost 4-2 to squander the title, despite taking them to the 2003 Champions League semi-finals, where they lost to neighbours Milan.

CORRADO VERDELLI (2003)
Cuper's number two was promoted to the temporary coaching position for a Champions League trip to Moscow to take on Lokomotiv, but a disastrous 3-0 defeat put paid to any hopes he had of taking on the role permanently. The former Inter player lasted less than a week in the job.

ALBERTO ZACCHERONI (2003-04)
'Zacc' was given the task of taking Inter back into the Champions League after Cuper's sacking and Verdelli's short-lived caretaker appointment, and eventually did just that as Inter finished fourth and earned a qualifying round spot. But despite having achieved the aim set out for him, the former Scudetto winner with Milan was sacked in favour of former Lazio boss Roberto Mancini.

ROBERTO MANCINI (2004-08)
Mancini remains to this day Inter's longest-serving boss under Massimo Moratti. After a third-place finish and a Coppa Italia win in his first season in charge, the president finally got his hands on a Scudetto as a result of the first Calciopoli trial of the following summer. The Nerazzurri would go on to dominate in Italy under Mancini, but he would never see this materialise into success in Europe, and after he told his players he wanted to leave following a Champions League defeat to Liverpool in 2008, his exit that summer was inevitable.

JOSE MOURINHO (2008-10)
The fact that every coach since Mourinho is immediately compared in style to the 'Special One' is testament to the impact he made at Pinetina. Two dominant seasons in charge were crowned by a magnificent treble after a Scudetto triumph first time around. The affection between Moratti and Mourinho after Zanetti had lifted the Champions League trophy aloft in Madrid told everything about what it meant to have found his right man after 15 years at the club.

RAFAEL BENITEZ (2010)
The former Liverpool boss seemed destined to fail in Lombardy almost from the very beginning. With ideas far removed from those of Mourinho, he was immediately under pressure, and a string of injuries would help to define his reign. Muscular issues left, right and centre blighted his shortened term.

LEONARDO (2010-11)
The Brazilian swept in to banish the post-Benitez blues, lifting the Nerazzurri from sixth to second while also leading them to another Coppa Italia victory. However, it was his failure in Europe, notably losing 5-2 at home to Schalke, which cast doubts over his calibre. An offer to take over as general manager at cash-rich Paris Saint-Germain proved to good to turn down.

GIAN PIERO GASPERINI (2011)
In one of the more doomed moves of Moratti's term in office, the president knocked on four other doors before finally handing the ex-Genoa boss the coach's job. Just five games into his reign, he was back out of a job after four defeats and no victories.

CLAUDIO RANIERI (2011-12)
The 'Tinkerman' lasted only six months after replacing the doomed Gasperini. After initially working his way into a good position, leading the club back into the Serie A title race, one win in 10 games saw the Nerazzurri slip to eighth in the table with nine games to play, and the Roman became another victim of Moratti's axe.

The Lazio youth team player, involved in a road accident last week, has lost his battle for life.

Mirko Fersini was left in a coma after suffering serious head injuries in a collision with a metal bin while riding on his moped in Fiumicino on April 6.

The 17-year-old defender, who was a member of Simone Inzaghi's Allievi Nazionali team, spent the past six days in intensive care but his condition never improved and on Thursday he passed away.

"After the tragic incident in which he was involved, the heart of Mirko Fersini has stopped beating this afternoon," a statement on the Lazio website read.

"The family of the young Biancocelesti defender has given permission to donate the organs.

"Lazio president Claudio Lotito, the coach [Edy Reja], players and all the staff will gather around the family of Mirko in this moment of extreme grief.

"As a sign of mourning, the club has lowered the flags to half-mast at Formello."

Biancocelesti fans had displayed banners of support for Fersini during their Serie A clash with Napoli last Saturday.

Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini has died after suffering cardiac arrest during his team's Serie B match at Pescara on Saturday. Morosini's death was confirmed by Dr Edoardo De Blasio, a cardiologist at Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital, who said: "unfortunately he was already dead when he arrived at hospital. He didn't regain consciousness."

All Italian football league matches this weekend have now been suspended as a mark of respect.

Morosini, 25, was given urgent medical attention on the pitch after collapsing after 31 minutes of the match. A defibrillator was also used before Morosini was rushed to Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital.

The Associated Press reported that the player was conscious when he was stretchered off the pitch but was put into a medically induced coma at the hospital. Italian news agency Ansa reported that Morosini suffered a heart attack in the ambulance.

"He looked at me in the eyes when he was taken into the ambulance," Pescara's general manager, Danilo Iannascoli, told Sky Italia.

Italian media reports said a car belonging to traffic police blocked the ambulance's way into the stadium and a window had to be broken so the car could be moved.

"I don't know if the ambulance was late, but I know that the entrance onto the pitch was blocked by a vehicle," Iannascoli said. "Morosini collapsed, he tried to get back up but then collapsed again."

The match was called off, with many of the other players leaving the field in tears.

Just read that Di Natale will take care of the disabled sister of the footballer who died this weekend.

All she had was her brother as their other brother and parents have all passed away.

If true then Di Natale is quite possibly a legend

Cassano scores the first goal as AC beat Siena 1-4.

Juventus also win big, 0-4 at Novara.

Inter beat Cesena 2-1 to go level on points with Napoli and Lazio, but with a worse goal difference than both. Udinese play Lazio later and will have the same points as the other three if they win.

Udinese beat Lazio 2-0. Di Natale with their first goal. Crazy finish at the end apparently.

Amazing that Inter could still make the Champions League given their season.

Juve drew 1-1 with Lecce, Milan are just a point behind now, winning 2-0 at home to Atalanta.

Napoli and Udinese are on 58 points.

Lazio drew 1-1 with Siena so they are fifth on 56 and Inter are sixth on 55 after losing 3-1 to Parma.

Juve go 0-1 up early on at Cagliari.

Hopefully Inter beat AC so Juve win the title and then lose their final game. Can't have a pub-team going unbeaten for a season.

Inter 1-0 AC!

Milito with the goal.

Udinese and Lazio both won 2-0 earlier, while Napoli lost 2-0 at Bologna. Still undecided going into the final games then.
