Saw this on another website:
On another side of things to put gooner minds at ease and to pinpoint where they are going wrong lets look at the transfer policy of old wenger
One of the great mysteries in recent football is why Wenger willingly dismantled the Invincibles side in so short a space of time. A team which went through the TOUGHEST league in the world unbeaten for a WHOLE SEASON
That truly was an excellent side. A solid back 4, a solid central midfield, 2 wingers who chipped in with **** loads of goals, and a front 2 blessed with technique. When you compare that team to what we saw at Old Trafford today, then there is an absolute gulf in class.
This was a team that combined great football with great mental toughness. Probably only a late Wayne Bridge goal denied them a treble that year (they would have killed Porto if they got to the final) - but Wenger for some reason ripped up that team. Why? It wasn't to do with their age (Vieira was 29, so was Henry, Campbell still a fit 31 when sold) - so what possessed Wenger to do this?
This is the team that won the title and their replacements. The thing to note is that objectively, every single player brought in has been inferior to the Invincibles side, with the exception of Fabregas. Who's now left.
Lehmann Got old, but replaced by Almunia, Fabiansky for the love of christ. Downgrade.
Lauren Sold Jan 2007, after being injured. Replaced by Eboue. Downgrade.
Campbell Sold 2006 (at 31). Replaced by Gallas. Neutral
Kolo Toure Sold last summer. Replaced by Koscielny and Squillachi. Downgrade
Cole Sold 2006. Replaced by Clichy. Downgrade.
Vieira Sold 2005. Replaced by Fabregas. Upgrade. (But Vieira even in his Italy years pisses all over Song and Denilson)
Gilberto. Sold 2007. Replaced by Song. Downgrade
Ljungberg. Sold 2007. Replaced by Rosicky/Hleb. Downgrade.
Pires. Sold 2006. Replaced by Reyes/Arshavin. Downgrade
Henry. Sold 2007. Replaced by van Persie. Downgrade. has an annual 4 month injury.
Bergkamp. Retired 2006. Replaced by nobody. Not even remotely. Downgrade.
Conclusion: Arsene Wenger's transfer market dealings since then have been poor. No wonder you can make £100million profit in the market when you replace gold with bronze. But you cannot sack wenger, due to all he has done for the lovely arsenal .
