It's not an interesting debate. It's childish shite.
As far as poor MP's go, I'd rather have somebody who can be held accountable by, and can gain the backing of a larger party, than a lone voice (muttering "Raving Loony" comments) in the house.

Tory leaders are never held accountable by their party for their policies and actions. The only sin a Tory leader can commit is to lose an election. They can have all old people gassed, workers flogged for doing less than 20 hours work a day - that will be permitted and voted for. But they must win the next election by whatever means are necessary. Even Thatcher was caught by that rule - as soon as it became likely she would lose the next election, she was replaced. The same will happen to Cameron.
This does not happen with the Monster Raving Looney Party. As long as the bow tie continues to rotate, the candidate is safe.

And it would be the same for Labour, or Lib Dem. To say that it's a Tory thing is blinkered.
We all know politicians are scumbags. They always have been, always will be.
It's the issue of the economy that matters the most, as it filters down through everything. And at the point of time we went to the polls, Labour couldn't manage it, and tbf, Lib Dems would not have been able to manage it. What you got was what the country wanted, and needed at the time.
Your broad strokes are more akin to football support than to realism.

Which is fine, even admirable. But under the current system your vote was for naught. Your views are not being represented at any level.
That's not your fault, it's the system. But it's the only one we've got so until that changes (it won't) I'd rather vote in a way which has some chance of leading to representation which, in my constituency, leaves me with 2 realistic options. I'm not massively attached to any party and have voted differently in different elections. I have explained why I voted the way I did but I don't need to, it's a personal choice which we all have.

I don't get your point - even if you don't vote for the person who wins, that person still represents you in Parliament.
My point is in our current system every vote for a candidate who doesn't win is, in effect, wasted. In the sense that it doesn't give you any representation. So while you can vote for a fringe party it is, IMO, a waste of a vote because there's no realistic chance of that candidate being elected. So my view is I might as well vote for one of the candidates who could realistically be elected. And in my area that only gives me 2 options. Others take a different view which is fine, each to their own. We have a pretty crappy system, under a different system I'd vote differently.

If people like myself didn't vote for who they believe in the Green party wouldn't have won a seat at the last election. Of course my vote counts.
If you believe you only voted for a local MP and that there are no wider issues attached then I have to tell you, you don't understand politics.

Bloody hurt but the pain's almost gone again - a few more treatments.
And yes LDG - I'm a prolific swimmer! - In fact, booked myself and my youngest son for a couple of nights in some 5 star hotel with pool, sauna, gym etc next month - can't wait.

Can't take bollockings myself - 6m into a new job was a bit shocked. On the one hand - the GP felt personally insulted that I criticized their appointment system, on the other, I don't believe my employers have the right to shout at me just because they don't like my opinion. What I actually said was 'this is the worst appointment system I've ever worked under.' Not the most tactfull comment with hindsight which is why I listened to what he had to say back... and listened... and listened.
It really is a shitty system here though and I can't see me shutting up about it - especially when I have patients complaining every day and receptionists running into my room to escape complaining patients. The problem is, the GP is a drama queen (literally) and knows I'm right. Guess it hit a nerve. Apart from the appointments shambles, I really love working here, I even like drama queen GP. I believe that's why I kept my cool.

If only!!!!!!!!
Actually and seriously. Minimum pricing in supermarkets is good for the economy too.
Cheap alcohol is not only a bad thing for people who really could do without living in a gutter, but it's also bad for the pub trade.
Pubs have been hit really hard ove the last ten years, because they're competing with the supermarkets, increasing tax at the pump and the recession in general.
I know some people prefer sitting at home in a dark room with the curtains draw downing vodka, but booze is about socialising for me. Getting out, seeing your mates, getting lashed and having a giggle.
I hardly drink at home unless I have someone to listen to tunes with, or a garden to sit in (company / friends included).
In any case, this is good news I reckon.

:good: Social drinking using alcohol as a catalyst is OK.
Drinking to just get pissed is pathetic. Drinking on your own is a bad sign.
The idea of a minimum limit is a good idea and the idea that it hurts people is the kind of bollocks you expect from the drinks industry. Example to day was a 3 litre bottle of 7% proof cider for about £1.50. That would go up to about £6 so the drink makers get upset. Now even most strong beers don't make it to 7% - usually 5-6% - and that would be way over £6 for 3 litres. Cider at £1.50 for 3 litres - that's about 5.5 pints. So 40p per unit (so 80p-£1-ish a pint of beer equivalent) is not a lot and anyone whining about that kind of level has serious issues.

I would take issue with the 'drinking on your own is a bad sign'. I looooove the taste of wine and will buy myself a nice crisp chenin blanc on the way home to savour whilst I read my book and unwind. The idea that that's somehow worse than meeting up with friends for a few drinks is just odd to me.

The idea that that's somehow worse than meeting up with friends for a few drinks is just odd to me. I think there is a distinction to be made, and of course, every now and then, i'll buy a few cana and sit and listen to some tunes as therapy and relaxation. In general though, the excitement of getting out and having a few with mates etc is more appealing when we're talking bulk quantity. I like some interaction, someone to bounce off. However, i'd be in real strife if my fridge was always stocked with booze, and i cracked open a bevvie whenever i'm home. And lots of people do that, as a matter of course. An every day routine. And sone worse than others. I mean, you really have a problem if you have to have a few voddy's just to get off to sleep and see the back of the day.My boozing is excessive at the weekend. I know this, but it's my choice. I don't depend on it. I live very healthy during the week, and would whip 90 percent of the country on the health and fitness stakes. I indulge, but i'd rather do it with company. I also have good friendships with landlords struggling to make a living. One cause is prices at the shops. Just think it's better all riund to set minimum prices. A) for the country's health, but b) to help the leaisure industry we've all struggled to afford to support.

I think it is absolutely terrible news. Pubs that don't adapt are the ones that are suffering.
Why should I pay more for booze just because a bunch of knob heads can't control their drink?
The minimum pricing levels won't affect my drinks of choice now, but you can bet your ass that once this fucking travesty of social engineering and market distortion comes in, these minimum pricing levels will skyrocket.
Fucking awful idea and whoever dreamt it up should be drowned in a swimming pool filled with Buckfast.

Pubs don't need to adapt. How many pubs charge less than 40p per unit? A pint is £3+ and has less than 3 units. My maths says that is not effected. Even a cheap pub that charged half that price would not be effected.
As far as distortion of markets is concerned, the supermarkets are making a loss on cheap alcohol and the money has to come from somewhere, so the rest of us are currently subsidising the knobheads when we buy other stuff at the supermarket.

Supermarkets are businesses and they operate the way they do because it is profitable to do so - you are not subsidising anyone when shopping in a supermarket. The market for pubs and supermarket bought products is entirely different. Pubs can never compete on the basis of price and it was never my point. You are so wrong - pubs need to adapt because many of them are no longer offering people what they want - and that is why they are dying. Society is changing and the pubs that adapt will be successful and are successful.
I like drinking in pubs and I like drinking at home - I regard the two as completely separate activities - which they are.
And finally, once these minimum pricing levels are introduced - just watch as they are raised.

Yes - pubs do need to adapt. They always have. Some will fail and disappear, new drinking and social mixing places will appear because that is what people want to do. But the minimum price of alcohol will not have any effect as the price is so low. The treasury is not making money from it, so there will be no need to raise it to an excessive amount as might be the case with duty and VAT. Because of that, it will not get raised indefinitely. If it was a treasury fund-raiser, then there would be ground for suspicion. But pubs will not die because of this - some licensee organisations are in favour of it, once they get over the knee-jerk reaction and realise that the minimum price level does not effect their own prices.

It IS a Treasury fund raiser because they will be collecting an additional 20% VAT on price increases. And Government does not just like to extort money off you, they also like to tell you what to do - when it is none of their fucking business. You can bet your ass, that once this is in, they will become bolder and you will see more of this social engineering.
The price of booze is not the problem in this country - and other than being far too expensive, it never has been the problem.

Sure - having a glass to wash down a mean or unwind as you say is OK. I was not clear - I mean if you drink a lot of glasses on your own, you are heading down a dodgy track.
Still disagree - some people just use 'social drinking' as an excuse instead of admitting they actually like a few drinks. I mean, if it's mainly the 'social' aspect surely people would be just as happy having a few soft drinks and meeting up with friends? Can't say I see many people hanging around the pub drinking soft drinks!
I spend my whole working day being charming to one patient after another, putting on a smile and making them feel comfortable regardless of what I feel like. The last thing I want to do most evenings after work is socialise. I don't drink every night but if I want a few drinks drinks at home in the peace and quiet of my own home what's dodgy about that? Am I sad for doing that? I don't think so.
