WAYNE ROONEY is one of FIVE English stars battling for a place in the FIFA FIFPro World XI. The Manchester United striker joins team-mate Rio Ferdinand and Chelsea trio John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard on the 55-man shortlist.
There are 13 other Premier League stars are also in the reckoning — including the now retired ex-United keeper Edwin van der Sar.
But stars from Spain's Primera Liga dominate the list, with a whopping 22 players included from their league.
Nine of Barcelona's starting XI which beat United in the Champions League final in May are included — Pedro and Javier Mascherano the men to miss out — with Real Madrid boasting 10 inclusions.
Italy's Serie A contributes nine players to the list, four come from Germany's Bundesliga and one each from Russia's Premier League and Brazil's Campeonato.
The nominees were voted on by the 50,000 professional footballers belonging to the players' unions across the world that form FIFPro.
The final XI will be announced at the FIFA Ballon d'Or in Zurich on January 9.
