Serie A will become the first domestic league to introduce referee's solely officiating the penalty area, with Marcello Nicchi left praising the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for being at the forefront of the game.
The president of the Italian Football Referee's Association (AIA) said at a press conference: "We are the first domestic league to opt to use referees around the penalty area, no other federation in the world uses them."
"Many people have been working behind the scenes to improve the quality officiating, and because of this, it is going to be a terrific season.
"We want to minimalise the chances of referees being blamed for defeats. We continue to talk to players, looking to intergrate the positive advances made in the European competition during the summer this season."
Nicchi went onto state the zero-tolerance surrounding referees fixing matches, saying: "If an official is the reason for any results [outside the laws of the game], then that referee or linesman knows that he will be expelled from the game, completely."
