There is this reflex reaction by politicians and the media that in the wake of something bad happening that “something must be done”
Now this is different from patiently holding impartial enquiries in an attempt to learn from a situation and seeing what can be done to prevent the bad thing or mitigate its effects.
It’s pinpointing what you believe to be the cause and pretending you know the solution because “something must be done”.
Police encouraged by government will target misinformation and what it considers “hate speech” - although I doubt for a second anyone could give me an objective definition of what constitutes hate speech.
Not only does this target freedom of expression, it exacerbates the very problem you’re looking to address by giving cynical people rationale to say “look what they don’t want you to know”
And such laws could be used by cynical governments in order to help them instigate a cover up.
This is not applying the law without fear or favour, this is reactionary state overreach.
