Oh - I sometimes do that but I don't see it is a requirement. The point I was trying to make is that a lot of drivers seem to assume that they have priority over pedestrians and that they are doing them a favour by not ignoring the pedestrian's right of way and just mowing them down - the thanks should not be 'thanks for not disobeying the highway code and slaughtering me in cold blood'.
Worse is on road junctions where cars seldom give way to pedestrians and if you exert your right of way, they go mental.
